Fuck Your Magic Antisemitism: A Lesser Key to the Appropriation of Jewish Magic & Mysticism

I am once again asking practitioners of magic, mysticism, and occultism to defer to Jewish voices and Jewish practitioners about the history and real-life impacts of appropriation of and theft from Judaism and Jewish mysticism instead of deferring to the opinions of non-Jewish occultists. I am also asking you to use discernment when engaging with revisionist history perpetuated by non-Jewish practitioners who profit or benefit from said revisionist history, such as claims that Jewish practitioners willingly "shared" or "gave" our practices with/to other communities, the refusal to acknowledge Jewish authorship, or the speaking over Jewish voices/attempts made by non-Jewish practitioners to speak for Jewish practitioners.

Now, I understand this can be overwhelming and many may not know where or how to begin, so I want to drop a recommendation. Fuck Your "Magic" Antisemitism: A Lesser Key to the Appropriation of Jewish Magic & Mysticism by Ezra Rose is an excellent place to start. This zine, which you can download for free (please leave a donation to support the author if you are able, and please share their work), is a wonderful treasure trove of history and resources. Per the author's description of the zine: FYMA is 'a guide to understanding the history and results of antisemitism in western occult and esoteric movements, from the origins of "Solomonic" magic in medieval and Renaissance ceremonial grimoires, through the late 19th & early 20th century occult revival's "Qabalistic" ritual, to ongoing appropriation and demonization in the 21st century. A labor of love & spite, the zine is both a personal and academic look at a widely ignored topic.'

I have recommended this zine several times and have said that I think it should be required reading in witchcraft and witchcraft adjacent communities, and I stand by that. It's very, very good, and it is absolutely packed with thoroughly researched, cited, useful information.

listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream off, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.

Obsession spoilers if you somehow are in these tags and haven't seen it/don't already know lol.

One of the more abrupt (and lowkey funny tbh) things wish Nikki does is shooting Ian on sight at one point, and I've seen a lot of memes about it because of that shock factor.

But it's not actually an impulsive decision that she makes. Nikki was PLANNING on killing Ian already. Sarah was impulsive, but Ian was premeditated.

When Bear first shows up at Ian's house with another One Wish Willow, Ian says Sarah had been texting him, telling him to come over to Bear's house. This was after Nikki killed Sarah, and started wearing her clothes. Kind of a blink and you'll miss it moment, and Bear does react to it, but doesn't tell Ian that he's in danger ( bc of course he doesn't).

So Nikki was using Sarah's phone to lure Ian over, and I can't imagine any situation that wouldn't end in her killing him if he showed up. Maybe because they used to hook up, maybe because Ian suggested (and lied about) a boys night, or maybe because Ian drew some attention to her at the party?

It's actually kinda refreshing that Ian didn't fall for it though, a character being smart thinking 'Hey, this is really weird,' (until his new status as a billionaire made him forget that weirdness).

wish Nikki is an example of the "born sexy yesterday" trope done right.

this trope has its roots in deeply misogynistic movies where a female character (who is often not a human, but an alien or robot) displays childlike behavior while also being extremely physically attractive.

this leads to a very questionable "romance" between her and the big strong man who either lies to her, manipulates her or coerces her into doing things she wouldn't do if she were not written to be so innocent.

wish Nikki fits this criteria, but this time it's a critique of rape culture and incels.

wish Nikki is very much like a child in a woman's body — from her speech patterns, her whiny tantrums and frown down to her defecating and throwing up on herself when Bear wasn't home.

and yet, you can see the drastic shift in the way she dresses. real Nikki was shown to be wearing an oversized jacket and shorts while wish Nikki's clothes get more and more revealing and male-gazey. she is basically the fantasy of every man who wrote and directed those old movies with the the "born sexy yesterday" trope.
