What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

#oh man. probably 9/11???#i dont remember the event itself because i was 4 but #i remember a couple weeks before #my dad had a meeting that was scheduled for september 11th in the south tower #and he was so excited to go to new york and 1) get to attend this cool meeting in the world trade center and 2) go upstate and see his mom #so he had this whole trip planned and then two weeks before he was supposed to go #the meeting got cancelled. and he was FURIOUS when he got that call #and then after the event i remember him just. shocked #like he 100% would have died had that meeting not been cancelled #so i remember that more than i remember the actual news & event and all that #i DO remember the news dropping that we were sending troops to iraq though. and i was VERY peeved about it for someone who was like 5
