Dil Beparwah is playing on the radio and we are playing cards.Ā
Mama says chaman gheela hai, abhi bahir naa jao.
Lekin itās february and the winter sun prickling my skin coupled with the feeling of wet grass in between my bare toes is something I have longed for since we moved to this neighbourhood over an year ago.Ā
My friend says sheās worried about how she feels like sheāll never move forward in life.Ā
Another says sheās sure sheāll get where she wants to be but might never find happiness.Ā
One fakes a laugh and jokes about how uncertain her life has become;
And one doesnāt say anything but we all know she feels heavy under the burden of what everyone expects her to be and achieve.Ā
I worry too. About all of that.
And paradoxically the more we try to outrun our fears and worriesĀ
the greater and more frightening they seem to get.Ā
So we cry. And we laugh. And we joke about how Faiz said that,Ā
dil naa-umeed to nahīƱ naakÄm hi to haiĀ lambi hai Ä”ham ki shaam magar shaam hi to hai
But the man never bothered mentioning thatĀ
itād be one of those shaamās that feel like a lifetime.Ā
Someone once told me that to love is to be weak;Ā
And I believed him so I shut everyone out because I thought all I needed was myself.Ā
But then I realized that,
Kabhi kabhi mujhe shaam mein dhar lag jaata hai;
And that I need my friends.Ā
And sometimes they need me too.Ā
So while we all sit on a twenty-years-old wet chithaayi in my front yard,Ā
playing cards while sipping rooh-af-za made with the freshly squeezed lemons we picked from the tree at the park,
And laugh about how none really know how solitaire works;
We feel okay.Ā
And we learn that sometimes feeling just okay is more than okay.Ā

shout out to forgotten asians.
shout out to south asians: asians from india, pakistan, sri lanka, bangladesh, afghanistan, bhutan, maldives, nepal.
shout out to ignored east asians from countries less romanticized than china, japan, and south korea: to mongolia, taiwan, vietnam, and further southeast to singapore, malaysia, the philippines, east timor, brunei, cambodia, myanmar, laos, thailand, indonesia.
shout out to ethnic groups within more known asian countries, like the tibetan people in china and the ainu and ryukyuan people in japan.
shout out to russian asians. shout out to central asians in former soviet countries, to people from kazakhstan, turkmenistan, tajikistan, uzbekistan, kyrgyzstan.
shout out to western asians in countries that donāt fit neatly into trivial western/european geographical boundaries of the middle east, of south asia, of europe, of africa.Ā
shout out to mixed asians, to latinx asians, to black asians, to indigenous asians, to mixed south and east asians, and every combination.
asian people are more than just the same few ethnicities shown on tv.
this means a lot to me because as someone from a minority ethnic group in Pakistan I am so tired of my people always being lumped in with the Pakistani/desi culture and crowd like it's genuinely upsetting how little people know at this point when people say Pakistani culture I just automatically assume they're talking about desi culture and that doesn't include me š
