Just saw the interview where Curry Barker explained that it's totally possible to get a normal wish from the One Wish Willow, and I love the way they did that so much. The reason Obsession happened isn't because it's trying to twist Bear's desires into something evil. It's not even because he phrased his want wrong. Obsession happened because Bear got his hands on a magic item that could do anything in existence, and chose to force someone to fall in love with him, which is an inherently evil thing to do.

What I love about the one wish willow in the movie obsession is that the Willow stick is not inherently evil. Its Bears wish that's evil. It's how he said it and his feelings that made the wish evil. Its him. It's all him. And he constantly doesn't own up to that or he puts the blame on someone else. All the Willow wish is doing is holding up a mirror to Bear and showing him that it's all him. It all comes from him. Nikki is like this because you took her autonomy and consent away. There are probably tons of other people who made simple, kind or ok wishes and nothing bad happened, and they probably never thought the Willow magic was real. And there are probably others who made selfish horrible wishes to because Bear probably wouldn't be the first. But it's all Bear.

i love the hansel and gretel scene so much. it speaks to me as someone who was a middle school girl who had mostly guy friends. the amount of times my peers, teachers, even parents asked if i had a crush on my friends or implied that i wanted to date them even though we were just friends? completely awful. and when one of these friends did confess their feelings for me, i felt sick to my stomach.

i love this scene because of how true it is. like bear wishing for nikki to like him, the poem is showing boundaries being crossed and how uncomfortable that can be, especially when the relationship is not meant to be romantic. yea, i may be a girl (eh, female presenting) friends with guys, but trying to force us into a romantic relationship does feel like being told i should sleep with a brother. yea, this scene is great.

if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
