here for hurt/comfort/whump content, art and writing reference. I'm hoping to post my oc content and writing here - links and tags will be updated here as I go.

I'm a big fan of historical and military settings, specifically age of sail, medieval europe, and many many others. I'm not much of a fandom person but I love the hornblower series, the leeward series, band of brothers, dunkirk, top gun etc. I'm also a traditional and textile artist which usually involves watercolour, beading, embroidery etc :)

[pain-in-the-everywhere]

something i never see explored with caretaker or friend characters is what it's like to grow up surrounded by traumatised people, but have no trauma of your own. it feels like you're on the outside of this club that you can only get into by going through something Really Bad, even though the people inside the club are happy to welcome you anyway, you know you'll never actually fit in.

and fucked up as it sounds, you want to fit in. you want the awful things to happen to you. you feel envious of what they have, even if that thing is memories of the most awful things known to man and consequences that run your daily functioning into the ground.

you're not sick enough to relate to the sick people, but you've seen ever so slightly too much to fit in with the "normal" people. your problems seem so minimal compared to these life-altering horrors that the whumpees have been through, yet you're not coping anyway. so either you admit that the problem is yourself, or you find a reason to react that way.

give me caretakers that sit through whumpee's stories and swallow back envy. who actively go looking for danger and dodgy people in the hopes that they'll go through something that can put them on whumpee's level. who plan out how to make things worse in precise, structured detail, then get angry with themself because what the fuck are they doing and it doesn't count if it's fucking orchestrated.

mentor characters realizing that their mentee is traumatized too. the first time they make an offhanded remark about drinking too much after work, the first time they run into each other making coffee at 5 am because they know they won't be able to get back to sleep after a nightmare. the guilt of not being able to protect their kid from the same things they've seen. knowing they're wearing the trauma like a badge of honour. knowing it's nothing to be proud of, but having nothing to say to discourage them, because they made the same choices too, right?

Also, when mentee realizes their mentor is also traumatized. All this time mentee has been trying to stay strong, trying to bounce back as fast as they could, because they think that's what Mentor expects and they don't want to disappoint. Pretending they haven't been having nightmares and hiding panic attacks until one day they realize Mentor has been here too. Suddenly some of Mentor's "quirks" make sense: why they're up before everyone else, why they have certain habits, avoid certain activities or topics - it makes sense.

Maybe realizing it could happen to someone like Mentor too makes Mentee feel less alone and safer to open up. Or maybe Mentee feels even more pressure, because they haven't been through half of what Mentor experienced, right? If Mentor had it worse and is still going, Mentee shouldn't complain. Right? They have enough to deal with, why be a burden.

i really have so many thoughts on characters' relationships with authority and leaders sticking their neck out for their team and loyalty and hero worship and seeing yourself in your protegee and imprinting on your boss like a baby bird. unfortunately i am very busy living it right now but I would like to write it down as well

At the start of the year I was apparently creating steamboat-related cliffhangers in drafts on a weekly basis. Which could mean nothing.

MANNN when secondary problems become bigger deals than anyone would’ve hoped for….

That nasty wound ended up infected, they’re changing bandages around reddened and seeping wounds with a sky-high fever

They were hoping so badly that their imperfectly-bandaged broken bone or twisted joint would heal without issue, but it causes them enough pain that they have to somehow re-set it

Hoping that their three, four-day illness would finally ease up, only to have someone in their life need to frantically call the hospital as they become delirious or very dangerously dehydrated

Pushing, and pushing, and pushing thinking that they can get away with it after a little rest and recovery time, only to be so knocked flat at a terrible time with pain or illness or exhaustion they they physically can’t push themselves any more and simply won’t be able to for a while

I love secondary side effects making everything worse bro!!!!

I love it when a character laughs uncarefully and their soft laugh turns into a groan, and then they still smile a little despite frowning in pain. I love this mixed expression of frowning and smiling for some reason. Especially when the character laughs because of something the caretaker said or did.
