thouts on shun being a girl now? im ready to fight netflix

Well, I’ll be honest. I’m not overly happy with it. I agree with a lot of people’s sentiments here. Shun was the least interesting of the main five to make a girl. Him being a soft, kind, gentle, but still incredibly strong man was really what set him apart from the main cast in the original series. If you’re going to switch one of the main cast to be a girl I think it would have been a lot more interesting to do it with say Hyoga or Ikki (especially Ikki, now that would have been cool).

But on the other hand, there are ways I can get behind this. We all know the original series was a sausage fest. We all know the female characters often got pushed to the side to highlight the awesomeness of the guys. Heck, that’s one of the big reasons I started organizing the Ladies Fest.

So I am happy to have a female character in the main cast. And as @sanctuarycolumn pointed out when I was talking with her about it, what this series is going to have is not only a female character in the main five, but arguably the most powerful of the five is now a girl. Provided they don’t fall into having her just be a damsel in distress (please don’t have Ikki coming to save her all the time!) that could be really awesome. And also really great for any new young girls who might get into the series thanks to the reboot.

So yeah, I do still think it would have been better if they’d done this with a different character than Shun, and I can understand why some people are upset, but I’m going to withhold most of my judgements until the show actually comes out. I’m still excited for the series and I really hope that it’s treated well and that hopefully it’ll bring more fans to the series especially in North America (north of Mexico that is).

Here’s a question: why the fuck did they decide to translate it as Seahorse Baian, when he is extremely clearly Hippocampus Baian?

The most logical explanation would be just Kurumada doing a literal translation of the kanji 海馬, used in Baian’s designation, and rolling with it, without looking too much in mythological references.

Tough, this makes me wonder why he decided that Sorrento’s scale, Siren, had to be written with the kanji of “Sea Witch” (海魔女), while almost all the other Marinas have their scale’s name written only in katakana...
