3. what was the last book you rated 1/5?

i’m pretty selective about what i read (bc i read a lot but don’t actually have time for it!) so i don’t often read things that are truly terrible - i also don’t really believe in 1 star ratings, there’s usually some redeeming feature about every book. i think the last thing i was disappointed with was kim jiyoung, born 1982: maybe i had built it up too much as i was super excited to read it, but it just came across as very one note and i also felt like the feminism of it was quite...behind the curve. that’s definitely not the author’s fault though - i think it was originally published in korea in 2016, but the english translation just doesn’t feel as timely.

4. are you an adventurous reader?

i hope so! i read quite broadly across a lot of different genres, but on the other hand i am selective and i do know what i will and won’t enjoy most of the time, so i have a tendency to default to these kinds of books: short powerful memoirs by writers, or 180 page novellas containing traumatic emotional experiences, basically. i’m trying not to be so scared of long books this year, so we’ll see how that works out...

11. how many books are on your to-read list right now?

i’m not at my own house right now - i travelled to my partner’s place at the start of april and now we are staying with my parents. here’s the suitcase i packed when i left my flat last month:

i don’t really keep a to read list tbh, but i must admit i started reading the left hand of darkness probably like 2 years ago and i still haven’t finished it...

20. how much do book covers matter?

to me as a reader? only a little - if a book is good, it’s good. to me as a bookseller though? whole different story. loads of books i love have terrible covers and it honestly does make them really hard to recommend to customers. i am desperate for someone to rejacket all of alan garner’s books, for example - the owl service is one of the best books ever and i would recommend it to so many people, but the cover is just dreadful...
