Unfinished Business pt.III (ft. an angsty bamon argument)

“Back in the prison world, if I had kissed you… would you have kissed me back?”

Bonnie doesn’t look away from the changing screen. “No.”

“Well. That answered my question,” says Damon, not bothering to mask his offence.

Bonnie points the remote at the TV, shutting the colour to black. “You had a girlfriend. A girlfriend who loved you so damn much she had to erase her memories just to cope with your death—”

“Exactly, Bon! We were dead! We were trapped in eternal purgatory for all we knew. We could have been having sex like that,” he gestures vaguely upstairs, “every fucking day!”

“Why are you angry with me!?”

“I’m angry with everything!” It’s a shock to the system, this anger. But now he sees it, how it viciously begs for attention, and Bonnie is the only one he has left to listen. “I’m angry that my brother is dead when it should have been me! I’m angry that I tried to make things work with Elena when I should have been with you, and fine! Yes! I’m angry with you Bonnie. I’m angry that you just left! You left me, and all I got was a fucking postcard every couple months. Stupid, impersonal postcards! I didn’t care that you were in Paris, or London, or Naples — I wanted you home.”

Unfinished Business (II)

Bonnie can’t sleep — not like this, not in his arms. She could blame it on the jet lag but the time for fooling herself has long since passed. 

No, she can’t sleep because lying against his naked chest, with the hand that was drawing circles on her back now resting languidly on her hip, is making her cry. 

As gently as she can manage, she removes herself from Damon’s possession. Then she stands, allowing a moment of observation: his long taut body in the moonlight, the shadow of his jaw. 

“Like what you see?” he murmurs.

Bonnie hastily presses her hands against her eyes. “I thought you were asleep!?”

“I was. But then my cuddling partner rudely departed.” He pats the space on the mattress she just vacated. “May I have her back please?”

Bonnie turns to face the window. “I’m—I’m struggling to sleep. Must be jet lag.”

“We don’t have to sleep,” says Damon. “Frankly, seeing you standing naked in my bedroom is making me feel very awake.” 

She can hear the stupid giddy grin in his words, and it makes her cry more.

When I was writing To Thine Own Self Be True last year, my beta @schedios mentioned the TV series Interview with the Vampire. I wanted to read the original source material before anything because I’m a literature nerd through and through, and GUYSSSSsssssss !!!! THE ANGST !!!! THE PROSE !!! As you can see, I annotated the shit out of it. If I ever write another multi-chapter Bamon fic, you can BET Damon is getting a taste of the Anne Rice existential dread treatment. I’ve never had vampires feel so damn real and horrifying and tragic. 100000% recommend.

The Salvatore brothers took the long way home from church that morning. The youngest skipped gaily along the street; the eldest walked with the pensive stoop of a child aged beyond his years. Each Christmas revealed to Damon the depth of the lie. Hymns of charitable goodwill, peace and harmony among men (among fathers and sons), did not apply to his own family. Stefan was too young to notice this: for him, Christmas was a beautifully wrapped gift beneath a beautifully decorated tree. Pain was not so easily disguised for Damon.

“Come along,” he said, tugging on his brother’s hand. He had stopped before the window of a town house and was gazing into the glowing interior with round-eyed wonder. ‘We have food at home, Stefan, come along.”

“No, Damon, look,” Stefan protested, jabbing a finger against the misted window, and Damon did.

Unlike the austere length of the table in their own Dining Room, this table was round, and filled with an innumerable number of guests of all ages. Children sat between the elderly, chatting without reticence, and the adults inclined their heads to listen as they piled food onto the plate of the person sitting beside them. Damon had never seen food look so real before — which was a silly thought considering the Salvatore family had never known a day’s hunger — but watching the scene, it struck him that Christmas dinner at the Salvatore Mansion was all ornamentation. A theatre play that entertained no one but his Father.

“Can we go in?” asked Stefan.

Damon turned away from the window. “We have our own feast to look forward to, come along.”

Media in general is to be terrible about consent and SA. When vampires and other supernatural beings are involved it’s often amplified.

In TVD specifically, Tyler almost SAs Vicki which is only mentioned once after if I’m not mistaken and then he becomes somewhat of a main character/protagonist as if that means nothing to his character.

Damon compels Caroline. Katherine also compels Stefan. While she/he may have been interested in the beginning, one thing about consent is you can take it away. Compelling them to be more agreeable or taking away their fear/feelings about the person they’re with is SA. They wouldn’t have continued if they had the choice and all their autonomy.

Damon also compels Andie to love and care for him.

In the TVD/TO universe it gets really weird when you think about the relationship between Rebekah and Marcel. Klaus is traveling with Rebekah and Elijah for a funeral and Klaus saves Marcel and takes him in at age 10. Klaus raises him from then till he’s an adult, Rebekah was around him from those ages. Marcel gains a crush on her, his “adoptive aunt”, and when he is older they get together.

Regardless of everyone being younger than you because you’re 100s of years old, she actually knew him as a child.

The things is, it just didn’t have to be written the way it was.

This. All of this. I just ranted about compulsion & consent in a post because I’d forgotten just how awful and blatant the SA is in this show. You’re right, it didn’t have to be written like this. Compulsion didn’t have to be used for sex, just like Tyler didn’t need to be so disgustingly misogynistic towards Vicki in S1 for us to understad he was a bad boyfriend.

The scene with Caroline waking up after having sex with Damon, realising her neck is bleeding, trying to get away whilst he’s sleeping only to be attacked and compelled again, stuck in a loop of endless abuse… This should never have been a plot point in a teen show romanticising the ‘bad guys’.

So, I started rewatching S1 of TVD. I’ve got three eps in and I don’t think I can do it anymore… It’s actually such whiplash to see Damon be this repulsive. I’d forgotten how frequently he uses compulsion for sex,and I wish it hadn’t been a plot device (not just for Damon but for Katherine too). Watching men manipulate women for sex/power is infinitely more disturbing than watching a vampire kill, probably because it feels too real. I mean duh, like we all knew TVD was problematic and maybe it’s just I’m so much older now, but watching these scenes featuring a character I’ve written so much about/read so much about made me feel a bit uncomfortable. If Bamon were going to become canon, I’d push through knowing the outcome is a beautiful, healthy relationship between two complexly brilliant characters. But idk bro. Elena becoming sired to Damon, Bon getting treated like crap for season after season, the writers fumbling Kat and Ian’s chemistry so fucking bad that the actors themselves are still speaking on it in the year 2025… I’m not God’s strongest soldier.

Thank goodness for fanfic that deals with all this shit with the nuance it deserves. I will be reading some Bamon tonight before bed for a cleanse xx
