Gefilte fish - meaning ‘stuffed fish’ in Yiddish - is a common dish eaten by Ashkenazi Jewish people.  There was, however, a divide in the European Jewish communities over a preference for ‘sweet’ gefilte fish versus ‘salty’ gefilte fish.  The Jewish communities from the modern-day Baltic States as well as Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus preferred the salty gefilte fish and the Jewish communities in most of Poland, Germany, Austria, etc., preferred the sweet gefilte fish.
