V.E. Schwab's advice for creating memorable characters - works for both protagonists and villains
source post: X
This is really good advice.
It also ties neatly into the simplest version of the formula for getting people emotionally engaged with your characters: or how to build the moment in which your character starts moving from their initial state to the state in which they'll start changing their own lives.
First, you figure out the one important thing the character believes that they're wrong about. There's usually a core misperception that they haven't examined. Once they're forced to engage with it, it'll start to change everything about their perception of the world they're inhabiting and/or the people in it.
Then, as V.E. says, you identify the character's great desire and their great fear: the thing that character wants more than anything, and the thing or situation that terrifies them, and that they'll go to any lengths to avoid.
And having identified these two objects or situations, you build a situation in which the two forces will be in close, direct opposition to one another... then drop the character down in between them, and squeeze. Those two opposing forces become the jaws of a vise... and you crank the vise more and more tightly closed until the character has no choice but to acknowledge those opposing forces, and start (even in a small way) to deal with the pressure being exerted and push their way through.
This does not have to be, initially, a great climactic moment. In fact, it works better if it's not. It's more effective if your character has a brief low-intensity brush with these conditions-in-conflict early on. That way, when your big resolution scene comes along about two-thirds or three-quarters of the way along through the story arc, you'll have set up a resonance between that earlier hint or intimation of what's to come, and the really big blowoff. Your readers will recognize the resonanceâthe throb of tension between the two occurrences, like the vibration of a plucked stringâand will find satisfaction both in the true resolution having been partially telegraphed earlier, and in how it's now being experienced and resolved in full.
This approach also allows you to set up more minor resonances between the realization of the conflict and its final resolution. These can serve to bind the structure of the work more closely together: to make it look (and be) less like a series of loosely strung-together plot events, and more like a unified whole, in which ripples of story business flow backwards and forwards, interpenetrating and influencing one another, and hinting at the big one to come.
But none of this can happen until the paired and opposing what-do-they-most-desire, what-do-they-most-fear axes have been defined. So that's a subject it's smart to spend some while thinking about (and for all your characters, not just the major ones), to be sure you're getting it right.
It's not unusual to get the wrong answers, or merely superficial ones, while you're still working out what's actually going on with the characters. So take your time. Eventually you'll find a set of answers that feel unquestionably right... and you can then nail those down in your notes and get on with making the kind of "good trouble" for your characters that will see them made complete.
Something I feel like not enough people talk about with Aki in regards to the time skip between the end of the Dark Signers arc and the beginning of the Ghost arc is how she bounced back so quickly to trusting people.
Like. Yes! Sheâs happy, sheâs made friends! Her future is getting brighter!
How does- How does she go about learning boundaries with them? How does she learn how to connect with others?
How does she go from being fresh off of learning that what her relationship with Divine was bad, to learning to be comfortable and adapting to being with new people?
Basically, I would have loved to see a period of awkwardness and emotional unbalance with Aki and her friends because she desperately does not want to fall back into her old habits and what she had with Divine, but she also feels like she has trouble connecting with the others, like Jack and Crow.
I just think of those first few months that first she doesnât know how to reach out, if sheâs still welcome or wanted. Sheâs hurt people, yes, sheâs changed, she believes in her friends, but does she believe in herself? She- Does she deserve to have nice things right now? Who does she talk to about any of this?!
She realizes how small it started with Divine.
âTell me whatâs on your mind, I want to be here for you, Aki. I care about you.â
Gimme more communication between Aki and others, them very clearly seeing somethingâs wrong, but knowing how to address it with her.
I think too much about missed opportunities with Aki lol, like yes, sheâs not the main character but sheâs still my favorite. :â)
No really, because like where is the internal struggle? Like she knows Divine is in prison and physically away from her, but a part of her just screams danger even if it's coming from her friends? Even though everything is a green flag from Yusei but she can't get herself to be fully open since the last time she did she was used for her powers? She has self-destructive behaviors and dialogue that wouldn't have been cured in 6 months time?
Does Divine attempt to make any contact with Aki even though he's likely in solitary confinement? The dude either was money laundering or had connections with having Arcadia in a skyscraper and in very expensive clothing. Surely he had to have connections somewhere and remind aki that even though he's in jail he can still track her down to intimidate her? (I'm still so mad that we never got an Aki vs Divine duel on screen when she does break away from arcadia).
Like does she have a sort of survivor's guilt with Toby and Misty or even any of her other fellow members of Arcadia that she was able to seek stable help through her new friends but is basically alone?? As far as I'm aware she's the only psychic duelist in 5ds in all of Neo Domino that's alive or not in prison? Did all of the other Psychic Duelists die in the building collapse of Arcadia? Because surely Aki wasn't the only one in that entire skyscraper??? Are there any psychic duelists that aren't part of Arcadia? I'm excluding the games because I personally haven't played them and I'm not knowledgable on them.
While I understand she needed to go back to DA for plot purposes, but she did create property damage with her powers and endangered other students from her powers. This was before all the DS stuff so their memories wouldn't have been wiped from that. Like. Even though her father is in a position of power, my understanding is that DA is a private school rather than a public school so they can expel and kick out whoever they want. So I want to know the conditions that she was even allowed to attend duel academy again, let alone any bullying she faced? Since she may have been gone for a few years but really anyone who was watching to Fortune Cup would've recognized her??? Especially the principal, like wouldn't he be mad that the student who caused structural damage out of anger, put other students in danger, dropped out the middle of the night to just disappear in thin air to join a dangerous cult comes back and goes 'sorry for everything but I want to come back and I promise to be good this time' ???
And does she ever use her powers in a non-combat situation either? like does she summon Black rose dragon to feel the petals of her dragon? Can she even use them outside of a dueling setting or does it drain her energy too much? Also, is seeing duel spirits part of a new power and does that make Ruka by extension a psychic duelist in the making too? Or is that something Ruka just doesn't have yet? Or is psychic dueling apart of a spectrum that has been just barely studied? or is seeing duel spirits a different ability that has zero connection to that? If that's the case then why can aki see duel spirits???
I love my sweet girl aki but this series does frustrate me. There are so many questions I have that will never be answered because all of the development went to everyone else alas.
To all my writer friends who are on the struggle bus/suffering from writer's block/just dealing with life stuff right now!
For those of you who dont get to see fireflies. Yes they are real and yes they are gentle
Fuck. I canât believe how much I needed to see something sweet and beautiful and needless right this very moment.
Thank you. Iâll try to get it to more people in need.
effed-up things we forget are canon in 5Ds
divine was EXTREMELY creepy to aki, and it probably wasn't explored more because it's kids anime at the end of the day (thank god).
also aki possibly could have been a victim of a human trafficking due to arcadia's shady ass motivations
crow's facility stays might have been even more brutal than yusei's
yusei wasn't adequately distanced from the idea of suicide by the time show ended (ark cradle - he was more worried about his friends following him, while he was ready to die)
everyone from satellite was basically homeless until halfway throught the show
crow said it himself, "if it weren't for kiryu who kept us occupied with a gang stuff, we would have probably succumbed to drugs/alcohol/thefts" ("would have become garbage")
and if we talk about kiryu - his facility stay most likely takes the cake (if suicide was a merciful fate back then)
lua and luca's parents have no idea that their child died at one point
I would also would like to add with Aki and Divine.
Even though she was on a list to be sent out across the world because is she incredibly strong, I don't think he would've sent her out. She had a direct connection to the Crimson dragon via her mark, plus the pain it caused her. He was concerned about the crimson dragon being resurrected by Illyaster, so why would he send out his most prized fighter, who clearly has a connection to a deity that illyaster wants to revive, by herself in a remote part of the world as a mercenary-for-hire? Personally I think he would've faked her death to keep her by his side and that list is part of that paper trail. Primarily if Illyaster can't get their hands on Aki, then the Crimson Dragon can't be resurrected. It's also far harder to escape an abuser if you're considered legally dead. After all Divine pinned Toby's death on her and she didn't even know it. All she knew was that Toby died but it wasn't by her hand, and didn't even consider Divine pinning that on her until maybe after he was supposedly dead. She, during the Fortune Cup, likely relied on Divine for shelter, money, food, getting healthcare, forms of ID to prove you are yourself, clothing etc. For all we know, Divine forged documents on Aki's behalf even though her parents were still alive.
He also mentioned to Aki that she'd be a modern Joan of Arc. If you know anything about Joan of Arc, yes she helped end the Hundred's Years War and essentially helped the French beat the English. Practically a national heroine to France. Though, she was burned at the stake for the crime of hersey. Which if Aki stayed along Arcadia's teachings she probably would've met a similar fate of dying as a martyr for Arcadia Movement.
He also installed a trigger word in Aki to duel mercilessly without her inhibitor or conscious mind, so it's very likely that Divine got her in a hypnotic state to install that phrase AS a trigger word for her to go berserk and likely a "kill switch" to get her to stop at some point before her duel with Misty. More than likely, she doesn't remember being in said state for that phrase or remember much of what was going on when that phrase was muttered.
Oh and Divine electrocuted a child to death for not being "useful enough" (sub only, dub is having him perpetually moved around to where even Divine doesn't know where Toby is or if he's even alive)
Divine in some of his sprite renders, also has a watch with his shirt and tie so it's likely that either a) Arcadia has multiple streams of income to afford such luxuries or b) committing tax fraud/money laundering.
Misty also died in a car crash in the dub, but drove off a cliff in the sub from grief of Toby dying before becoming a dark signer. Implying that before Toby's death, their parents are either both dead and/or No contact and very likely had custody of Toby (think Lilo and Nani from Lilo & Stitch, but was already mid modeling career based of the little footage we do see in series)
I know I'm grasping at straws but, canon alas, shifted away from arcadia post DS arc.

The slender acacia would not shake
One long milk-bloom on the tree;
The white lake-blossom fell into the lake,
As the pimpernel dozed on the lea;
But the rose was awake all night for your sake,
Knowing your promise to me;
The lilies and roses were all awake.
They sigh'd for the dawn and thee.
Queen rose of the rosebud garden of girls,
Come hither, the dances are done,
In gloss of satin and glimmer of pearls,
Queen lily and rose in one;
Shine out, little head, sunning over with curls,
To the flowers, and be their sun.
There has fallen a splendid tear
From the passion-flower at the gate.
She is coming, my dove, my dear;
She is coming, my life, my fate;
The red rose cries, *She is near, she is near;'
And the white rose weeps, 'She is late;'
The larkspur listens, 'I hear, I hear;'
And the lily whispers, 'I wait.'
She is coming, my own, my sweet;
Were it ever so airy a tread.
My heart would hear her and beat,
Were it earth in an earthy bed;
My dust would hear her and beat,
Had I lain for a century dead;
Would start and tremble under her feet,
And blossom in purple and red.
[excerpt from Lord Tennysonâs Maud I, XXII.]
So i was briefly exposed to this poem in an art history seminar on the Victorian Era a few months ago, and because I am totally normal, all I could think about was how well it fit Aki on at least two layers. One: the entire linking of Maud with flowers, especially the rose, for obvious reasons works so so well. Especially the title âQueen Rose of the Rosebud Garde of Girlsâ makes so much sense. And the second layer is a little deeper but also totally supported by my own confirmation bias. Maud is described to be deceptively beautiful but incredibly cold looking, with a stern expression and a complexion that makes her appear almost dead. I havenât read the entire poem down to detail but from what I could gather, the lyrical protagonist falls in love with her (and grows increasingly obsessed) after a disagreement between their fathers lead to his fatherâs death, so at the beginning he tries to get back at Maudâs father through her, but ends up being bewitched by her in the process, eventually dueling and killing her brother etc. etc. itâs all very Victorian. Maud is mostly passive in this, never actively described to do anything and yet she is said to be both the best thing in the lyrical protagonistâs life while at the same time being his demise.
Retrospectively one could assume that both of these things are not inherent to her character and just qualities assigned to her by the men in her life. In the Victorian era there was almost a popular belief that there were two opposing kinds of women: femmes fragiles and femme fatales, the first kind being dependent and almost sickly but on the other hand sweet and kind and docile, while the femme fatale as in popular media today is independent yet violent and oftentimes promiscuous.
Itâs an interesting duality that I see in Aki in a way (helped by the image of roses, yâknow, theyâre beautiful flowers with delicate blossoms but also piercing thorns which the show uses actively to characterize this duality in Aki) , but in a way where it has always been decided for her instead of by her. Sheâs violent at the start because that is the side of hers that is fostered by Divine and towards the end of the show her caring nature shines through instead. Interestingly enough though, she is less independent when in her âfemme fataleâ stage, which is really just her anger and pain towards abandonment as a young teen not being dealt with properly. She was never a true femme fatale to begin with and neither has she ever been and will ever be a femme fragile. Sheâs just Aki, with both all the hurt sheâs had to experience but just as much all the times she got to experience genuine happiness, a lot of which comes from being taking care of by and caring for her friends.
There are a lot more thoughts in my brain about how women were characterized in literature throughout the decades, using the image of the rose â a sort of de-humanization of the woman and at the same time a personification of nature as woman. We talked about this extensively in another seminar on nature songs but that would exceed ALL limits on this post.
So instead just take this little drawing I made of my Queen Rose. She enables me to do things in my art I never knew I could do.
I was gonna try to keep my mouth shut, but I can't. I just can't. I have to go on another Aki rant because I feel like I'm going to explode. It's about this scene:
This drives me insane and I'm putting this under a readmore. Expect incoherent screaming, all ye who enter here.
To hop on this post, I would've loved to see a different arc for Aki. One where she learns to accept herself and her powers/or at least build some turmoil with them, at Duel academy instead, without Yusei being around. I love Faithshipping but hear me out.
In the DS arc if memory serves, she was always having trouble in school at least with getting along with others. I know this is a magical children's card game. But I refuse to believe that she had zero ounce of anxiety or face any sort of bullying the minute she came back to duel academy. Some students would've had to remember that she was the Black Rose Witch, in a positive or negative light. Even with a memory wipe it wouldn't make sense, since she was BRW at the Fortune Cup and from my understanding wouldn't wipe Yusei's title of new king of Turbo duels from the public's memory? So it wouldn't wipe that title for Aki either sonce it wasn't under the influence of an Earthbound Immortal (however I could be misremembering here).
Especially since based on screenshots of flashbacks implied that she has at somepoint:
A. used duel monsters on others as young as 8 out of fear/frustration around other children her age, likely being made fun of
B. has been at least known to cause destruction at duel academy based off of a duel with an unknown opponent who has at least faced her once, and would've put her on a "do not enroll list" at some point for property damage, before skipping/dropping out. Which would've put extra pressure on her to be a model student or risk getting kicked out and blowing any chance she has at a decent education.
C. actively harmed another student using said cards(in the dub was explicited stated as Koda, but I don't really watch the dub because I can not take the dialogue seriously).
There should've been at least a mini arc of her falling into a sense of anxiety of losing control of her powers or at least still learning to control them more frequently in/at Duel Academy, and then be bullied/constantly bullied for it. Then challenges said bully to a duel out of anger/need to prove something. Has trouble controlling her powers in the duel at first but, this time, she has support from the twins at Duel academy to prevent her from falling into that cycle of isolation and hatred again, allowing her to gain more of a grip on herself even if she doesn't 100% control them. It would still have a bit of that build up if she was constantly judging herself hard for having psychic powers but not being able to control them consistently in canon, and then allow her to have the questioning moment of losing her powers. Ontop of it she doesn't have Yusei around to support her emotionally (during school hours), but her social supports being two children who look up to her so she has to rely on herself to not only win but to know that she can control her powers without it being a one time fluke.
I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.
Iâve noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say âand make sure to scroll down and click completed onlyâ or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics âbecause they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didnât realize this fic hadnât been updated since 2012â.
The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writerâs WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isnât the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while theyâre ahead when they arenât garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If youâre worried about reading something that hasnât been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.
Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.
Legit, getting a subscription on a fic Iâd abandoned 10 years earlier spurred me into action to finish it (and write a sequel!)
#The journey of reading a fic while itâs updating is part of the fun!
Yes exactly this! I love subscribing to fics forgetting about them a bit and then being pleasantly surprised when they update again and they show up in my inbox. It makes me feel like Iâm a Charles Dickens fan living in 1830s London waiting patiently for his new chapter to be released via the daily paper.
People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought Iâd get right to the heart of the matter
