“I’m sure being a detective must keep you busy - and on your toes at all times!” Maria exclaimed. “Exactly! I always tell my clients that. They’ll try to come up with some sort of explanation as to why they want their hair done, but I look at them like you don’t need any! If you wanna do it, go for it. If it makes you happy, it makes you happy. I don’t color my hair much, but I do change it up a bit with style. Short to long to bangs - you name it.” She laughed. “Hmm, plans? Nah, not really. I was probably gonna go home and check out what’s new on Netflix. Super lame, huh?”

She nodded her head, but smiled, “Oh, it most certainly does. But it’s not a bad thing at all really.” she said with a little shrug. “People just get weird and assume they have to have an excuse for anything and everything,” she said with a roll of her eyes. “But, sooner or later, they’ll hopefully come to understand that their worth comes from inside and that they don’t need external reasons to do anything,” she said sliding the shampoo into her purse instead of getting a bag. “I’ve never changed my color. To scared I’ll somehow ruin this natural color.” she said with a little laugh, “Oh come on, it’s such a nice day! and early you gotta go out. I was going to go to cloak & stagger if you wanna join me?”

Everything is just as I remember it. Scarlett thought walking down the street. It had been 4 years since she left and even when she knew it was the best thing for her and for her sister, she had to admit she missed this place. She missed shops, cafes, bars, everything. She could remember all the good time she used to have around, but she couldn’t help thinking about bad memories too.

“It just smells like home” she said overwhelmed by bitter sweet feeling. “Oh, I’m sorry , I didn’t realize I said this out loud.” she flushed when she turned over and saw there was someone beside her.

Peyton was on a break, or moreso she was off for the rest of the day. She was stuffing her badge into her purse and rounding the corner from the station when she heard someone speak. Her eyes shot up and she smiled, it was a familiar voice and one she hadn’t heard in a couple of years. A smile danced onto her lips and she looked to an old classmate. “It’s fine.” she said the smile growing, “So you’re back?” she asked, “Or are you just visiting?” she hadn’t seen Scarlett in a couple of years.

“I always have to appreciate some good hair when I see it.” Maria chuckled, taking the shampoo from the girl in front of her. At her next statement, she raised an eyebrow. “Detective, huh? That’s pretty cool. I couldn’t ever imagine doing something like that. But you are absolutely right! You can look great doin’ it. Hell, if you wanna look great and the only place you’re gonna be going is the living room, that’s okay too.” She rang up the shampoo bottle. “Yep, that would be me.”

The smile continued to tug at her lips, it was always refreshing to meet people who really enjoyed what they did. So often she came across those who just did their job to make a paycheck, and she never would blame anyone for that, but she liked to see people enjoying it. “Yes ma’am. Detective Lancaster at your service,” she said with a playful bow. “It’s a fun job, a huge puzzle, but a hell of a lot of fun.” Peyton added a moment later. “That’s totally true, look good for yourself and no one else.” she said with a shrug as she pulled the money out of her pocket. “It’s a pleasure to meet ya. I see you’re wrapping up for the day.” she said and paused, “Fun plans for after work?” she asked cocking her head to one side. Curiosity and manners taking over.

“Split ends? From what I can tell from here, your hair definitely doesn’t need a trim. It looks gorgeous! So healthy.” Maria exclaimed. She set aside the broom, making her way to the register. “Peyton, right?” She didn’t know the girl well, but knew of her. Everyone knew everyone here. 

Peyton’s cheeks warmed and lightly turned red thanks to the compliment. “Thanks. I do my best to take care of my hair.” she said and moved to the register as well. “Just because I’m a detective doesn’t mean I can’t look great while doing it.” she chuckled and set the shampoo down for her to ring up. “Yeah, you’re .... Maria? Right?” she asked and fished her wallet out of her purse as she spoke.

KASSIDY and peyton had gotten rather acquainted over the years , and not necessarily in the best way . kassi was … quite the problem child these days , and a lot of her rebellious nights had ended her at the station with peyton being drilled for her bad decisions . however , she hadn’t had to have one of these conversations with peyton in quite a while and truth be told , she was actually missing being in the other’s company , which is why she’d chosen to visit the other at the station , just for the hell of it . when she watched the redhead approach her desk , kassidy grinned . “ surprise ! i’m here and NOT in handcuffs . ” she spoke teasingly .

Peyton had gotten promoted to a detective in the last six months and was loving it. She was happy to finally step away from being a beat cop and to actually start making her way towards the FBI. Towards doing what her dream was. Sure, it meant she was away from the people she knew so well and she weirdly missed some of her old charges. Of course, only the ones who didn’t really do anything bad, they just got into things they shouldn't. Kassidy... was one of them. And seeing the other woman wander into the station cause a chuckle to fall and she shook her head as the other walked over. “That’s a first Kassidy. What’s brought you here today? Need some help with something?”

Maria loved what she did for work, but every week she couldn’t wait for Sundays. The hair salon closed early so she had most of her evening free. The girl was so focused on sweeping the floors she hadn’t heard someone come through the door. She turned, a look of surprise on her face. “I didn’t even hear you come in! I hope you weren’t standin’ there long. Unfortunately, we’re closin’ up. I could maybe do a quick trim…unless you needed something else other than a haircut?” @shstarters​

Peyton needed more shampoo, and of course, the corner store was out of her brand. So she made her way to the hairdresser knowing that if anyone had it -- they would. Or she really hoped because she was out and it was the only brand she used. She walked in rather silently, without really meaning to, and looked around at the wall of products. hearing the woman speak she turned on her heel and smiled, “Oh -- no no trim or anything, not unless it looks like I have split ends.” she laughed, “I just came in for some shampoo.” her hand wrapping around the neck of the Aveda Root Shampoo.

“Unfortunately. I let my mom babysit for one night, and when I picked her up, I was warned that they listened to it close to two dozen times in two hours because it kept her busy. My mom tried to teach her the dance and everything, but all she does is pinch her fingers together.” Kip shook her head sadly. “We have tried every song I can possibly think of that is fun to listen to. Don’t Stop Believing got a few bops out of her, but then she went back to the shark.” Her eyes widened at the mention of a temper tantrum. “You clearly haven’t been around hurricane Ella before. Temper tantrums are her specialty, and when they happen…dear lord, god help anyone in her way.” She laughed.

“Parents -- they mean the best but...” she shook her head with a chuckle. she had heard from other friends who had kids that the grandparents did things that the parents never would have -- and well the little ones got used to the spoils. “Sounds like a drug,” Peyton said with a laugh, hand moving to cover her mouth slightly. “The shark.” she mused, saying it is the most ridiculous tone she could. “We gotta get her addicted to something else. Maybe throw on just -- old Disney movies? distract her with the classics?” she mused, hand moving from her face to her hair as her eyes drifted to the sky. She really didn’t know much about children, she wasn’t much of a child person. She liked them, but she didn’t know what to do with them. “I’m not used to most kids when it comes to temper tantrums. I don't think I’d know what to do if I saw one.” she laughed.

“No, Eleanor Grace, we cannot listen to Baby Shark just one more time!” Kipley exclaimed, looking down at the toddler who just stared blankly back at her, making a pinching motion with her fingers. Kip knew exactly what that meant, and that damn dreaded song was not making an appearance today. “Why don’t we listen to something that won’t make me want to jump in front of the nearest passing car, hmm? Why not The Lion King or…or the best soundtrack of all time, the Tarzan soundtrack. Those songs make Mommy want to dance, not die.” Ella still sat there, pinching her fingers together. Looking around, Kip stopped the nearest person to her. “Look. Please help me explain to this kid that Baby Shark has got to be one of the worst things to happen to music, in the history of forever, and Tarzan is possibly the best. I swear, she totally understands what we’re saying.” @shstarters​

Peyton was listening to a podcast on her run. She did multiple throughout the day when she wasn’t working, doing her best to keep up a physical routine and keep herself in shape. Today she was running down one of the streets and slowed to a walk as she let herself catch her voice... and it was during that time that she heard someone calling out. She glanced over, popping one of the headphones out of her ears and smiled to the mother and child. “So you got a little one obsessed with Baby shark.” she chuckled. “Play another song on repeat until she chooses a new one -- or just let her throw the temper tantrum and get her anger out of her system. Kids have to learn disappointment sometime and this isn’t a horrible way to learn it.” she chuckled. “Besides, your the mom, play what you wanna hear and maybe seeing how much you love it she’ll start to love it too.”

the raise in her voice did not go unnoticed by pandora. for as long as she had known peyton, this had always been her path. for her to have gotten as far as she did made pandora proud for her. “that’s fantastic, peyton. it really is.” her own career path hadn’t gotten nearly as far as her best friend’s but she was still as content as she could be. “i’m working at bake it off. just as a baker. it’s not my own shop but it’s enough for now.” even if she wanted to open up her own bakery, she couldn’t do that in springhill. eventually she would have to move on. pandora’s nerves had been shot as she finally broke open about her relationship with peyton. while she assumed peyton’s response would be similar to what she was given, she also feared it had all been too much. “it was hard to be around you because you were making me happy. i didn’t feel like i deserved to be happy then. i was suppo– i was miserable and i couldn’t put that on you.” catching peyton’s eyes, pandora brought up as much courage as she could. “i’m here now, if you wanted to try again. i can’t make up for what we lost but we can try? maybe?”

The smile on her lips could only be described as ecstatic. It was truly the one thing in life that got her so excited she couldn’t contain herself. “Thanks,” she said with a large smile, “Oh! Baking! I’m not surprised you’re doing that, you’ve always been amazing at it.” she smiled. “I’m sure, that before you know it, you’ll have your own bakery.” She hoped that when that day came that she’d be there for the opening, that she’d get one of the first cupcakes or loaves of bread -- she had always wanted to see her oldest friend make their dream come true. “You always deserve to be happy Pan.” she said taking a hesitant step towards her friend, the need to hug or hold her was strong but she stopped herself, not sure if it would be wanted. “I wanted to be there for you. I was happy to help shoulder the weight, to deal with your anger and sadness -- whatever it was. I wanted to be there for you... but I get it. You needed that space, to separate from it.” she sighed, glancing away for a few moments before she looked back to Pandora. “I would love to. We can make up for lost time -- one way or another.” she said and reached out with a hand, a smile on her lips. “We can have dinner? catch up -- fully. truly. not just a little grocery store banter?”

now that she had gotten her attention, pandora lost all the words she wanted to say. it had been her fault that they were nothing to each other these days. just a whisper of days innocent. when her own mother had passed, the hardest person to be around was the one who knew her the best. how could she force peyton to go through watching her become a shell of herself? especially when their histories weren’t so different. face to face with her biggest regret, pandora had to swallow down her own self-pity and focus solely on her best friend. “you too. i — uh what have you been up to recently?” trying to keep the conversation civil was challenging. soon enough, pandora was blurting out the real reason she sought her out. “i wanted to apologize for being a crap friend. no matter what i was going through it was wrong of me to push you away. i’m not asking for forgiveness because i don’t deserve it and i know ‘sorry’ doesn’t just magically fix anything. but i am, sorry for pushing you away.”

Peyton wasn’t sure what to even think, this was so -- unexpected, welcome but very unexpected. She licked her lips and sighed looking down at the tile floor. She swallowed and looked back up. She lifted her shoulders in a small shrug but let a smile creep onto her lips, “Work mostly, I’m a detective now....” she said her voice rising ever so slightly, excitement in her voice. she really was proud of where she was in life when it came to her career. Soon, she hoped, she’d be taking the test for the FBI and finally doing the job she’s always wanted to do. “And yourself?” she asked, her head tilting. She was about to ask another question when Pandora went on to the real reason she was talking to her. “You don’t need to apologize for that -- I mean, I get it, you lost your mom, I can’t say I was the best person to be around when my mom died either.” she said and bit down on her bottom lip, “I’m sorry we fell apart as friends too....I’ve missed having you in my life, but -- I really do get it” Her eyes lfted from the tile floors and back up to Pandora.

Finley stared down at the hand stuck out toward him. It felt to be a rather odd time for formalities, particularly with him there in nothing but at towel, but he smirked and took it to shake anyway. “Yeah, that’s right.” He grinned and let go of Peyton’s hand. “As of… two months ago, now. Do you head there often?” 

Peyton was nothing if not both polite and courteous -- even in odd situations. She had to be for what she wanted to do with her life. Following rules and being cordial was part of the job. She shook his hand with a grin, “Not all the time, but probably twice to three times a month.” she added with little lift of her shoulders. “Great place you have there.” she added a moment later, she honestly was barely noticing he was in his towel. Not that she didn’t admire him in the towel. but she was going to be respectful.

     “yes… uhm..” she had to conceal her grin of embarrassment by nibbling over her lower lip. “you are welcome.. “ as the girl counted the change back in her head, it was shortly filled with fog at the next few words that drew her attention. “oh.. i–..really? i do not think i am… but thank you…” evie’s face was flushed at this point and there was no possible way to conceal it. 

It was really unlike Peyton to get flustered, she was usually so collected and calm around people. It came with the job. But -- I guess even sometimes detectives lose their cool and show more emotions than they mean to. “Does anyone ever really believe they’re pretty? I don’t think I’ve met many who do.” she laughed. “But I guess we both have to learn to own it.” she said with a chuckle.

evie was relieved to know that the redhead wasn’t fazed by her itsy bitsy mistake. although, she couldn’t seem to break the trance she was in. “um.. i am sorry.. but i just wanted to say you are so pretty!” her head shook in order to change the subject. “anyways.. yes. yes you can.” her little fingers tapped across the screen to total up the price. “mmk.. 4.39 please.”

Peyton allowed a smile to slide over her lips, she was about to say something but the compliment made her cheeks turn as red as her hair. “Oh-I -- Thanks.” she chuckled, she shook her head, and the blush off her cheeks and pulled out her wallet and the money. “Here ya go -- thanks.” she said and swallowed, “Ah-- You know you’re gorgeous too right? Because really -- you’re stunning.”

there were many things in the past that pandora regretted. one of those being the subtle destruction of her relationship with her best friend. when everything at home hit the fan, pandora found herself pulling more and more into herself. everything else fell away to grief. so when she ran across a photo of herself and peyton lancaster at about ten years old, a blip of sorrow reached her in a way that she hadn’t thought possible. realistically, she knew that feeling horrible about it wouldn’t do her any good. it was likely they would have grown apart no matter what happened. but when she caught a glimpse of familiar red hair turning a corner in the grocery store, she found herself chasing after her. “peyton!” she called after her, moving quickly to catch up. once she was right behind her, words fell away and she wondered exactly what to say, not having thought that far ahead on it.

Peyton just needed some basics, paper towels, bread, some jam, queso (because she will fight anyone who says its not a necessity), and veggies. She had a small basket hanging from her arm, and when she heard a very familiar, but not heard recently, the voice came and slammed into her memory. She felt her stomach flipped and then sunk to her ass all the course of a second as her mind wandered back to all those years that she and Pandora spent together as best friends. She felt a small smile tug at her lips but she schooled herself into a more neutral reaction and glanced over her shoulder. When she locked eyes on the familiar brunette she turned on her heel and looked Pandora up and down. Somehow, despite ten years having passed, she still looked and seemed so familiar. though she knew they had both changed. “Pandora.”  she said a small smile dancing onto red painted lips. “You -- you look good.”

“Someone who has a big ol’ crush on me, obviously.” The Englishman joked, accepting the towel the redhead had handed him and stepping back behind the shower curtain to dry himself. “Thank you. I think you’ve saved the entire gym an eyeful.” Finley grinned, tucking the towel around his waist and stepping out of the shower recess. “I don’t think we’ve properly met yet, but it’s Peyton, isn’t it?” 

She felt the corner of her lip twitch upwards at his comment, oh boy did he have an ego. But it was endearing instead of annoying, or at least for the moment, it was. She shook her head and let out a quiet laugh. She thought about making a comment but instead just shook her head, “I don’t believe we have.” she said and stuck her hand out, blame the training on the formalities. “Yup, that’s me.” she said, paused and then her eyes lit up, “Finley right? You’re the owner of the Green Room?”
