language rant (im out and about on mobile so this is not well written or thought out or formatted lol):
trying to force our traditional language to fit into colonial constructs is not language reclamation.
asking us to translate your corporate out-of-office message into the language does not feel appropriate to me. (translating directly doesnt work like that either)
do you know how to introduce yourself, talk about where you are from and who your relatives and ancestors are? do you know how to pray and share blessings at feasts and gatherings? do you know the words for our cultural foods and crafts?
start there, if you dont. start there and stay there and everything else will come.
if you do already know all that, and practice that everyday, and you still want an out-of-office message in the language? you already have a feel for the language, so think of how you would share the sentiment /in/ the language instead of directly translating the english one.
reclamation involves a good amount of limiting the effects of anglophonic hegemony (english language supremacy) so. we gotta keep english away from our heritage language learning as much as possible. so direct translations are not ideal.
