What are some good games on Steam that are under a dollar?

Worthwhile games under a dollar, eh? Sure, I’ll give it a shot. Bear in mind that I’m Canadian, though, which means I’m guessing at what the USD prices are - don’t blame me if some of these are a few cents over the one-dollar mark!

Cellar - An arcade style puzzle game about a little girl exploring a dark, monster-infested basement. Less twitchy than you’d think; you don’t move very fast, and there’s usually only one correct route in each level.

Heroine’s Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok- An old school Sierra-style point-and-click adventure with light RPG elements. Some survival mechanics (e.g, cold, hunger, etc.), but you can turn them off.

Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls - A very good NES-era Mega Man clone, if you can get past the “monster girls” premise. Actually 100% non-smutty, which is a rarity for the genre. Gamepad recommended!

Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt - A cute little top-down action RPG with a simple bullet-hell combat system. Extremely retro style; think less “Super Nintendo” and more “ZX Spectrum”.

I always find it kind of weird that matriarchal cultures in fiction are always “women fight and hunt, men stay home and care for the babies” because world-building-wise, it makes no sense

think about it. like, assuming that gender even works the same in this fantasy culture as it does in ours, with gender conflated with sex (because let’s be real, all of these stories assume that), men wouldn’t be the ones to make the babies, so why would they be the ones to care for the babies? why is fighting and hunting necessary for leadership?

writing a matriarchy this way is just lazy, because you’re just taking the patriarchy and just swapping the people in it, rather than actually swapping the culture. especially when there are so many other cool things you could explore. like, what if it’s not a swap of roles but of what society deems important?

maybe a matriarchy would have hunting and fighting be part of the man’s job, but undervalued. like taking the trash out or cleaning toilets: necessary, but gross, and not noble or interesting. maybe farming is now the most important thing, and is given a lot of spiritual and cultural weight.

how would law work? what crimes would exist, and what things would be considered too trivial to make illegal? who gets what property? why?

how would religion work? how would you mark time or the passage into adulthood? what would marriage look like? if bloodlines are through the mother, bastardy wouldn’t even be a concept - how does that work?

what qualities would be most important in a person? how would you define strength or leadership? what knowledge would be the most coveted and protected? what acts or roles are considered useless or degrading?

like, you can’t just take our current society and say you’re turning it on its head when you’re just regurgitating it wholesale. you have to really think about why things are the way they are and change that.

The premise for the movie Anastasia is so ridiculous but somehow they turned it into a work of beautiful timeless art it’s astounding

Oh, yes, it’s definitely historically inaccurate, and Don Bluth tossed in a fair number of fantasy elements as well. (Undead Rasputin, talking bat, and singing bug army from Hell, anyone?) But at the same time, the premise for the movie–that an amnesiac woman could actually be a surviving daughter of the Tsar–is pretty much the real-life case of Anna Anderson, who claimed (falsely) to be Anastasia.

One of my very favourite things about Anastasia is that not only are zombie Rasputin and his talking bat goofy as hell, they’re almost completely irrelevant to the actual plot.

Seiriously, trace his path. Rasputin appears at the beginning of the film, takes credit for the Russian Revolution (which, historically, would have happened anyway), then promptly falls into a river and doesn’t intersect with the protagonists again until the very end of the film. Sure, he sends demons to assassinate them at a couple of points, but their influence manifests as seemingly mundane misfortune that our heroes manage to evade without ever becoming aware of Rasputin’s involvement.

From the perspective of anyone other than the audience, the final confrontation with zombie Rasputin is utterly inexplicable. Sure, it makes sense to us, because we’ve seen him posture and bellow and claim credit for all the bad stuff that happens to the protagonists, but from their perspective, he comes right the hell out of nowhere.

(Heck, the 2016 stage adaptation manages to cut Rasputin’s part entirely without changing any essential element of the plot!)
