The thing is Johji V Bobasa feels like its such a level of understanding growth of a series.

Pervert baby is indicative of the early manga. He's not the first or last SA joke in YGO more so in my beloved s0.

Like Honda and Jou flip skirts of their classmates, several straight up plots revolve around Anzu getting into. Situations.

It sucks!

But it kinda fades out past DK. Its not nearly as unfortunate a flavor in the later series.

But MAN.

Shadi already is... sort of gestural when it comes to his design, then you have the entire Ishtar issue with their costuming and backstory, you kinda have the entire mysticism and set dressing for most of YGO actually

And its like ok thats already.... bad. But at BEST you can make the case argument for someone who has a genuine affection for the location and culture albeit confused and messy.

Its impossible to excuse the amount of SA both mocking and plot related in s0 but it ends around BC.

actually wait i'm back for a sec. in the wake of all of this madness i would like to offer some sanity in the form of something certifiably AWESOME with you guys, check it out

BOOM. streetview style partial reconstruction of Amenhotep III's royal palace. The site is in french but it's easy enough to navigate. It's not 100% historically accurate, but it's very well informed and seeks to capture a believable image of what the palace could have looked like. highly recommended!!!

Okay i am no longer in denial

A lot of people are saying bobasa's issues in the manga end with his character design but imo the concept of "guy from the tombs who follows you around and carries your artifacts and calls you master and then becomes the door spirit after the prophecy is fufilled" is orientalist at "best" and gets worse the more you contextualize it with the story as a whole. Yugioh has two semi-major characters who have dark skin every time they appear and they are the human backpack and the slave complacency story. The romanticizing of "servants" is a whole issue in and of itself

i was blissfully unaware of Babosa for my entire life until I read the manga a few months ago and I had to put it down for a bit because...... he just has such, and I'm being nice here, unfortunate design. I do not understand why it wasn't Shadi who showed up again instead. I was fully expecting it to be him. Like I felt like he was built up to be a major player in the end there, given how he had a role to play with both Pegasus and Marik. I know he was the spirit Atem's father sent to protect him (unless I'm misremembering things) but surely he could have done what Babosa did too.

LITERALLY it could have been shadi. it would have even been good for shadi too. give him something to do other than shamble around aimlessly in the distant background of the story

just looked it up. holy fuck. they did it by de-duplicating assets. I'm just. my jaw is on the floor. supposedly duplicating assets helps load times on HDDs but. holy fuck at what cost

it's worse than that: The Helldivers devs were told that duplicating assets would help HDD load times, but then they actually tested it and it had basically zero effect on load times!

So they had more than sextupled the size of their game by following industry standard practice that actually did basically nothing!
