im seeing a lot of confusion about rachel reid's discord comments, because how can she assert that her major notes for TLG were about shane's selfishness and stupidity and inattentiveness to his sad boyfriend, when shane is the one who reaches out to ilya, gently suggests he's mentally struggling and could talk to a professional, and ilya is the one who rudely shuts him down?
meanwhile, when shane is the one going through it—he's anxious about being outed and doesnt want to come out due to the league's homophobia, he's personally threatened by the commissioner, he struggles with disordered eating, if not an outright eating disorder (outright saying he diets for a sense of control, feeling guilty about tasting lemonade on his boyfriend's lips, his low point is eating one singular snicker's bar)—ilya fails to reciprocate empathy. shane tells ilya about the commissioner threatening him and ilya basically goes great now my bitch bf will never want to come out 🙄 (compare this with how he reacts when his reformed bigot white bestie troy was threatened by the commissioner: ilya is automatically protective of him.) shane starts an unhealthily restrictive diet due to his fears of aging (read: being pushed) out of the sport, and ilya looks down on him for it and mocks his diet to his face. shane, who is a hypervisible athlete of color in an extremely white sport, looks uncomfortable in a room full of white people talking about the league's issues, and ilya deduces that this is because shane doesnt know "the dark side of hockey" the way he does. this is a ridiculous assumption that should reveal a worrying lack of empathy for his partner of color, especially since throughout the series there is a pattern of other hockey players targeting shane with homophobic language, which ilya has been present for. except rachel herself states shane has no trauma from the sport and shane's own pov asserts that hockey has never made him sad.
do you guys get where im going with this? the elephant in the room is race. rachel narratively blames shane, hyperscrutinizes his flaws and justifies or provides excuses for ilya's, because she has implicit racist biases and subconsciously sees empathy as a one-way obligation in their relationship. ilya lacks empathy for shane because she lacks empathy for shane and thinks ilya is right. she monopolizes empathy for ilya because he is white and because she doesnt see characters of color as fully people and capable of having their own interiority or struggles to explore. if you've read tough guy or role model, you can see this same exact thing play out in ryan price and fabian salah's relationship or with troy barrett and his ex adrian dela cruz.
and remember how i said that there's a pattern of other hockey players being homophobic to shane? this is never brought up in shane's pov, not even hinted at. we only see these instances through the pov of white characters and are only given explorations of how they feel, not shane. shane is completely absent except as a prop to make her sadboy white characters feel tormented and angry, and rachel never connects his "self-absorbed" anxieties about wanting to stay closeted to the disproportionate homophobia he already faces, because rachel is uninterested in giving shane grace.
so when rachel says ilya's biggest flaw is his fear of being hurt (note how the language centers his hurt, not how his actions cause hurt), while shane's is his supposed selfishness (is shane not also afraid of being hurt? isnt that where his food issues and unwillingness to come out come from)? when she said shane is too focused on his "ridiculous" diet and not on "actually important things" like his depressed boyfriend? when she said in a reddit AMA that she only gave shane food issues to give ilya something to poke fun at? when that one interviewer asked her about the criticisms of how she wrote her asian character and she pivoted to talking about ilya's childhood trauma? her fetishistic descriptions of shane and fabian, to the point you can tell she wanted to call them exotic and her editor probably told her to tone it down? the way she contrasts adrian's appearance and supposed shortcomings with harris? her insistence that her books are challenging hockey culture while completely dismissing how hostile and dehumanizing it can be to people of color? and last but not least, THE DICK SIZE RANKING?
it's racism all the way down guys
I'm seeing people say RR must be transferring her hate for Shane towards Hudson and that's why she acts like that towards him. And I don't really think that's the case at all. There's for sure bias involved in regard to how she views Hudson. For example the real reason why she had doubts about Hudson's casting base on the vibe he gave off his IG photos is that it didn't aligned with the fetishized image she had of Shane being this small, hairless, less masculine gay Asian bottom. Even though out of the two, just from how they look physically, Hudson is the who resembles Shane way more than Connor resembled Ilya. But Connor did have pictures of him in IG where he came across as this muscled "manly" guy which aligned with how Ilya exists in her head even though Connor is not 6'3 with hazel eyes.
So in addition to that bias she already holds, I think the real reason she continues to be weird towards Hudson is because of what this comment highlights.
She absolutely must hate that Hudson is getting praised for playing Shane in a way she never got praised for how she wrote him. The same fans who loved and were absolutely endeared by Hudson's performance are mostly the same ones who critiqued how she wrote Shane in the first place. And that must bother her so much because she keeps getting the same critiques in regard to Shane. Even though she did nothing to actually response to the criticism, in her mind, she should also be getting the praise for Shane because she really believes how Hudson played Shane is how she wrote Shane in the books. In her recent interviews where she continues to double down on Shane being selfish, Shane doesn't have an ED, Shane doesn't have trauma, etc it's so clear that she doesn't actually believe her characterization of Shane has any issues. She just thinks the fans critiquing her just misunderstood her, hence why she keeps doubling down on the points she's been called out for. To her, it's not fair that Hudson is getting all this love and being given credit for bringing Shane to life as a fully fleshed out nuanced character. Because she thinks that's what she did in the books.
(I also think there's probably a slight resentment towards Hudson from her because he probably asked her the type of questions she hates answering about Shane. Like you know the kind of questions that would force her to think about Shane independently and not just in relationship to Ilya. She probably felt out of her depth that she couldn't give any real thoughtful answers. And we have enough proof of just how much better Hudson is at articulating his thoughts and understanding of Shane as a character. Again, in a way that she's never been able to and she's always been called out for it.)
happy birthday, techno.
I saw the shock collar ask and it had me 🥵 so I wanted to chime in with the addition of Ilya putting it on the setting where if Shane makes a noise it shocks him (you know like one of those cruel ones to stop dogs from barking) and then edging the LIFE out of him, so that every whine and whimper and moan results in him getting shocked, which creates a feedback loop where every shock makes him moan, so the collar shocks him again, which makes him moan more… and on and on and on until he’s just incoherent and drooling from it all. And every now and again Ilya will stop whatever it is he’s doing to drive Shane mad with pleasure to look down at him in mock disapproval, tutting at him and telling him to be quiet, as if Shane is just too stupid to understand what he needs to do to get the shocks to stop…
okay I’m running away now bc I’m shy 🙈 🏃

I really hope season 2 digs into the way that like. everything shane feared would happen if he came out. did then happen to him. from what I've seen, i feel like the book kind of glosses past because yay same team but like.
team turned on him. turns out people he thought were his friends apparently very much were not. pushed out of the place that's been his home and his life's work like he was nothing. massive pay cut. no longer a captain. no longer star center. personally threatened by the head of the organization he's worked for since he was a teenager.
and adding onto ALL OF THIS is that he's the first asian player to have done all of this. he has come SO FAR and worked SO fucking diligently, and he has done it all on extra hard mode. AND HE STILL DID IT. he put his head down, got to work, let SO MUCH shit roll off him because he had his eyes on the prize, and he MADE IT. he fucking MADE IT.
and then it ALL gets taken away from him.
like this got played as a laugh, but idk man. in light of what happened, this feels so fucking MEAN. yeah he and ilya chirp each other and enjoy it, but this just feels like something that would still be fucking RAW emotionally.
yeah he got ilya, but he lost literally fucking. EVERYTHING ELSE. his fucking ENTIRE CAREER got a hard reset that was completely out of his control.
and now he just has to. live with that.
Harris posts a compilation of shane's 'ohhh you piss me off', whacking ilya with his stick during practice, 'no NO', his Angry Pout ™️, 'ilya so HELP me', glaring from the bench, n ofc the ever present 'fuck off rozanov'. at the end is another compilation of the camera panning to Ilya's reaction to every one with the most endearing ily eyes. its captioned nobody save him. hes right where he wants to be. the hollanov shippers send that shit triple platinum in a day.
All of Shane’s underwear is just a solid color, mostly black, some navy blue, and the occasional dark grey. That is except for one pair Ilya had dubbed his sexy lingerie which is light gray with a red stripe along the band
“So sultry~”
“Who taught you that word?”
“I do not know if my virgin eyes can handle two colors”
“You’re not even a- Shut up!”
Ilya teases Shane relentless about his singular pair of two toned underwear, which means it’s entirely his fault when Shane sits him down for another Tampa style confessional to reveal he also has a pair with little snoopys on them
As a white Slavic person myself who dated an Asian man for several years, I feel like I have some very specific Hollanov headcanons I would like to share
1. Jokes about being mistaken for relatives, anyone who has ever been in an interracial relationships knows what I’m talking about. Some white Centaurs player is complaining about his white girlfriend being mistaken for his sister, and Ilya’s annoying ass cuts in like “omg this happens to Shane and I alllll the time sooo annoying”, the sarcastic jokes that they get mistaken for siblings/twins/cousins never stop
2. Communism jokes whenever Ilya wants to share something that Shane has, “Shane it’s OUR personal space, this is how it is in Russia 🙄” then whenever Ilya complains about Shane’s boring car, Shane hits him with the “oh I thought it was OUR car huh🤨”
3. The STRONG mutual agreement that cold water is bad for indigestion and highly preferring room temp drinking water, and yes, this does get them some side eyes from teammates when they always refuse ice in their water. On the flip side, they both drink their tea scorching hot, and anything less than boiling is not hot enough.
4. They may avoid The Question since they’re both famous, but I feel like it’s likely that Ilya still sometimes gets the heavily disguised “oh and where is your husband from…no no I mean where is he ‘originally’ from” and every time he gives a straight faced “Ottawa😐”
5. I know in the show we see Shane and Ilya wearing shoes in the house a few times and I’m here to say this is FAKE NEWS. Both of our boys are strict no outdoor shoes in the house, and they only wear house slippers when at home.
6. Whenever they are drunk or just delirious with sleep in the late hours, one or both of them starts a sentence in a different language without even realizing. Just to clarify, multilingual people do not “forget to switch” but the wires can get crossed when the brain is impaired. Shane hears Ilya getting up at 3am for water and tries to ask where he’s going, but it comes out in French and Ilya’s standing there in the dark like “…I don’t know what that means Shane”
7. An unanticipated struggle of hiding their relationship in their early days was just their different hair types. Hayden is hanging out at Shane’s place and sees strands of blonde curly hair on the couch and spots curly hair products in the bathroom…suspicious. They’re constantly finding each other’s hair in their beds, their clothes, their OWN hair, Shane one time finds a strand of Ilya’s hair in his meal prep and gives him the cold shoulder for the rest of the day.
8. Obligatory jokes about throwing in a “oh what because I’m Asian?” in an arbitrary conversation. Ilya and Shane are obviously immune to these from each other over time but it never fails to turn their teammates into fumbling messes. A Boston teammate asks Ilya if he knows about a niche American political topic (he doesn’t) but Ilya just responds with “oh you assume I do not know bc I am immigrant, this is so xenophobic of you” and he watches with glee as this guy backpedals harder than ever before in his life
I kinda thought of these off the top of my head, I would love to hear other peoples thoughts about this 😋😋
Do u guys think Shane and Ilya make fun of the rest of the gay hockey society because they all got normcore boyfriends who make $40k a year
Shane: I mean I guess Fabian is an entrepreneur that’s gotta count for something right?
Ilya: [barely listening] yeah for sure. Should I buy this Rolls-Royce in yellow or red?
Shane: The yellow will clash with our garage.
Thank god Ilya married Shane Hollander because he did have his thumb over the buy button on a Cybertruck & Shane said “that is the least fuckable car I’ve ever seen” & Ilya cleared his browser history
