Do you have favorite pigeon breeds and/or species?
Breeds, I like a lot of them. I really like old German owls for looks. Frillbacks look cute, too.
Species? Hands down love how nicobar pigeons look
But pink necked greens are a close second:
And I gotta have some love for bronzewings
And for absolute units, you cannot beat Victoria crowned pigeons:
Someone in the tags mentioned that the last photo does not do justice to the SIZE of the Victoria crowned pigeon, which is why I was calling them an absolute unit, and you know what. They’re right. So here’s another pair of photos, of the crowned pigeons at the Virginia Zoo:
And a human holding open the wing of an adult:
Large specimens can be 3.5kg/7.7lbs+ which is the weight of small hen peafowl like Artemis:
Anyway crowned pigeons are gigantic and amazing. The Victoria crowned is the largest of the four species. If you want to look up the other they are the western crowned, Scheepmaker’s crowned, and Sclater’s crowned pigeons. They all look basically alike, but the last two have red on the breasts and wings, which is pretty cool.
There are a few people in the tags asking why they got the “ugly” pigeons and the answer is: you didn’t. I can almost guarantee you’re talking about rock doves, which are beautiful in their own right. Here’s what a wild type rock dove looks like:
Look at them in FLIGHT, at the iridescence in their necks, the dark outlines, the way the bars spread out into a pattern:
Here is one of the simple mutations, a checked pattern on the wing instead of the double bars:
And humans have LOVED these kind of pigeons so intensely for so long that we have created all sorts of mutations upon the framework of their DNA. All of the ones you see in the US got here because humans carried them with us. None of them are wild, they are feral. You could go out and tame an adult to pet level frankly quite easily, in a way you simple cannot do with other birds. We’ve also bred them for use! Homing pigeons? Racing pigeons? Both created through selective breeding of rock doves for their abilities, not their looks.
Racing pigeons are the most expensive birds in the entire world, with the most expensive one, Armando, having been sold for $1.4 MILLION. And he’s beautiful.
Anyway, just because you’ve gotten so used to looking at something that you can no longer see the beauty doesn’t mean they’re not beautiful.
There will never be enough appreciation for these birds in the world <3

I can relate deeply
Stockholms metro travelling pigeons
In the surburbs of at the edge of the green metro line in Stockholm, the pigeons gas learnt to use the metro.
I have seen them myself, and they really are doing it clearly on porpuse. Just calmly stepping on and of the the train, and standing around and waiting for new trains to arrive!
No accident, and clearly they do this With A Bird Plan (to find more food..)
They travel on the ends on of the green line. The article i will link below talks about hökarängen to farsta centrum, but i have observed them travelling even farther. Although still far from the city center.

Such smart pidgeys!

Check out this sassy lad
Oo he is verry sassy, that S T A N C E :)
Hey so I saw your comment under that ask and just really want to show you this other pigeon picture I took that day. The trick is to wait patiently under the sun until the pigeons are all warm and relaxed and too confused to be alarmed by you when you move closer with the camera
