Firstly let us tell you what FlashFictionFriday on our blog is all about. It’s a fun writer-event that’s meant to inspire, share and connect writings of all genres and writers of all ages. It’s designed to make people want to write, especially if they’re feeling blocked. Everyone and everything is welcome!

We always do our very best to keep the prompts genre open, entertaining, positive and encouraging.

Write between 100-1000 words. It also can be a fan fiction or poetry entry. Just tag fan fiction and 18+ stories accordingly.

Staying Motivated on Your Projects

Hi there, Nony! Thanks so much for your ask! I’m actually really glad you sent this one; motivation used to be one of my biggest issues when I first started out writing, so I’m glad to help anyone who might have the same issue. Let’s get right into it!

Why are you doing this?

One of the most common reasons we lose motivation is because we forget why we started. When you can keep this spark in mind, it makes it much easier to pull it to the front of your mind again and keep going.

So, the very first thing I did when I decided I wanted to take my writing seriously was write down why. I would try to keep this reason away from what it could be in the future; write what you’re feeling about your project in this moment. Write about your passion and how much it means to you. It could be a single word, or a sentence, or a paragraph. What matters is that you know why you’re doing this.

What’s even better is if you get the chance to add onto it. Whenever you’re really feeling motivated about your project or your writing, return to this motive and add on to it. Personally, one of the best things for me to to when I’m not feeling motivated to work on my project is to look at all these again. If past me saw the spark, then I just have to believe I can find it again.

I wonder if one of the reasons that it’s so hard for content creators (especially fic writers) to get comments is because of the tumblr culture of like…

how dare you make a comment when you reblog. how dare you.

Like, we all know that right? Like, this whole culture of commenting directly in the comment box when reblogging is seen as heinous and awful and YOU SHOULD COMMENT IN THE TAGS INSTEAD. Especially if it’s seen as “unnecessary” (as in not adding to a conversation, or it’s just like “THIS” or “YAY” or something).  

I mean, I’ve been on Tumblr since 2011, and I know that got burned into my brain. I still struggle with it, whether in feeling irritated when I see someone comment on a post “unnecessarily” or by feeling weird about commenting or even by staying in the tags to comment.

Literally that whole talking in the tags thing is a byproduct of that culture. 

Obviously this is tumblr-centric but like, come on, I would imagine that viewpoint would stay with someone and they would avoid commenting on other places (like FF.net or AO3) as a result. We’re all afraid of somehow committing a faux pas because tumblr is… well, it’s unforgiving. 

This is just a thought, to be honest. I don’t have a solution except that I think it’s a good idea to ignore that toxic opinion of Commenting on Posts is Bad and You Should Feel Bad. Just ignore it.

I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to reblog and comment on fics. The content creators would be really happy if you did. They won’t yell at you. They’ll be so happy you did. I promise.

OP is right, reblogging and commenting shouldn’t be viewed as a bad thing. As a creator there’s nothing more exciting than seeing others interact with you and your work, and sometimes starting conversations like this is how we make great online friends in the future! Methods of Death & How They Feel

Drowning: When victims eventually submerge, they hold their breath for as long as possible, typically 30 to 90 seconds. After that, they inhale some water, splutter, cough and inhale more. Survivors say there is a feeling of tearing and a burning sensation in the chest as water goes down into the airway. Then that sort of slips into a feeling of calmness and tranquility. That calmness represents the beginnings of the loss of consciousness from oxygen deprivation, which eventually results in the heart stopping and brain death.

Heart Attack: The most common symptom is chest pain: a tightness, pressure or squeezing, often described as an “elephant on my chest”, which may be lasting or come and go. This is the heart muscle struggling and dying from oxygen deprivation. Pain can radiate to the jaw, throat, back, belly and arms. Other signs and symptoms include shortness of breath, nausea and cold sweats.

Bleeding to Death:  Anyone losing 1.5 litres – either through an external wound or internal bleeding – feels weak, thirsty and anxious, and would be breathing fast. By 2 litres, people experience dizziness, confusion and then eventual unconsciousness.

Fire: Burns inflict immediate and intense pain through stimulation of the pain nerves in the skin. To make matters worse, burns also trigger a rapid inflammatory response, which boosts sensitivity to pain in the injured tissues and surrounding areas.As burn intensities progress, some feeling is lost but not much. 3rd degree burns don’t hurt as much as 2nd degree burns.

Decapitation: Very quick. Consciousness is said to continue for a few seconds after decapitation. It’s thought to be painless. But the separation of the spinal cord and brain may cause severe pain.

Electrocution: Higher currents can produce nearly immediate unconsciousness. The electric chair was designed to produce instant loss of consciousness and painless death, but that’s debatable. It’s been proposed that prisoners could instead be dying from heating of the brain, or perhaps from suffocation due to paralysis of the breathing muscles instead of electrocution itself because the skulls of the wall are a thick and powerful insulator. 

Falling from a height: Another instantaneous death. Survivors of great falls often report the sensation of time slowing down. The natural reaction is to struggle to maintain a feet-first landing, resulting in fractures to the leg bones, lower spinal column and life-threatening broken pelvises. The impact traveling up through the body can also burst the aorta and heart chambers. 

Hanging: The rope puts pressure on the windpipe and the arteries to the brain. This can cause unconsciousness in 10 seconds, but it takes longer if the noose is incorrectly sited. Witnesses of public hangings often reported victims “dancing” in pain at the end of the rope, struggling violently as they asphyxiated. 

Lethal injection: . First comes the anaesthetic thiopental to speed away any feelings of pain, followed by a paralytic agent called pancuronium to stop breathing. Finally potassium chloride is injected, which stops the heart almost instantly. Eyewitnesses have reported inmates convulsing, heaving and attempting to sit up during the procedure, suggesting it’s not always completely effective.

Vacuum (In Outer Space): When the external air pressure suddenly drops, the air in the lungs expands, tearing the fragile gas exchange tissues. This is especially damaging if the victim neglects to exhale prior to decompression or tries to hold their breath. Oxygen begins to escape from the blood and lungs. Human survivors from NASA often report an initial pain, like being hit in the chest, and may remember feeling air escape from their lungs and the inability to inhale. Time to the loss of consciousness was generally less than 15 seconds.

I would just like to take a second to thank every single fanfiction writer who’s ever published a fic. In the last 3 weeks, I’ve read over 890,000 words of fanfiction while in quarantine. I know legally, fanfiction writers are not considered “essential” but let me tell you: they are essential to me. Essential to my sanity, my wellbeing, my happiness. Fic gives me so much joy and such a love for the world and the people in it, and fic writers don’t ask for anything in return, except occasional engagement. So from the bottom of my heart: thank you fic writers. Thank you for keeping me company during this time of isolation. Thank you for writing stories that give me hope and take my mind off of my anxiety. Thank you for making me laugh even when I don’t think it’s possible. Choosing a Point of view

A lot of people usually have some means of writing their stories within a specific POV. Its usually whatever POV you normally prefer to read in be that first person or third person. But there are certain strengths and weaknesses within these that also have their own pros and cons as well. Whats more is that once you choose a point of view, you’re stuck with it for the remainder of your manuscript. So take a look at these and make your choice from there.

First person: “I woke up surrounded by an oppressive fog.”

Pros: The nice thing about first person is that you have a centralized character do deliver a lot of information directly to the reader. Be this information about your world or general observations around it or even the inner feelings and thoughts on these situations.  

Cons: The biggest issue I’ve seen with first person is that its used as a crutch by new writers. What I mean by this is that since there is a central protagonist telling the story, that thus translates into telling the story instead of showing the reader. So the means of immersion can get lost if you end up just telling someone the story you’re trying to show.

Recommendations: Artemis by Andy Weir and One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Second person: “You woke up surrounded by an oppressive fog.”

Pros: I personally used this one before to have the reader experience the story as though they were the protagonist. (AO3 Link) For its setting, I thought it worked pretty well all things considered. Instead of having an avatar that the reader can transpose themselves onto, the reader is just the character themselves.

Cons: You can count on one hand and still have fingers left over with how many second person fiction novels there are. Its because of this that I can’t even give an example on what to read outside of fanfiction. I’ve read well over a few hundred books and haven’t come across a single book that was second person.

Third Person: “Michel woke up surrounded by an oppressive fog”

Pros: While probably being the most popular means of writing a story, another strength is the sheer volume you can cover within a story. Since you’re not limited to what this character can see or what they know, you can convey more information. Along with this, you can also put certain feelings and emotions behind what’s being seen by the characters as well while choosing to keep certain details omitted from the reader.

Cons: With this sheer volume you’re given to play with, it can be more than a little overwhelming if you’re not familiar with using this POV. Along with that, if you’re going into writing a story and trying it from a third person perspective, it can end up back firing by the same cons as first person. That being you end up telling more of the story where you should otherwise show.

Recommendations: Anything by Stephen King the man seems to think he gets paid by the word so he spares no detail when it comes to describing something within the third person.

At the end of the day though, the important part is that your story is what you want it to be. So I want you to just pick a narrative style that works for you. And the only way to really get a feel for any style is to read a lot into that style.

Other things to add:

First person is great for telling a story in a biased way, third person is better for a more objective voice (but you can still make it biased, it’ll just be harder for the reader to tell).

Second person makes it REALLY hard to add description. I wrote a 1200 word short story in it and Jesus, there’s no good way to do it.

A story done well in first person will probably be inherently unrealistic; after all, lots notices the details that act as foreshadowing and make stories immersive. It’s okay to do that, you can rely on a certain amount of suspension of disbelief.

It’s normal to get overwhelmed in third person, all you can do is practice. Ultimately, it’s easier and there’s more wiggle room, THEN you can learn first person properly.

Character voice needs to be developed more in first person, but you still need a strong voice in third, it’s just not necessarily any of the characters’.
