32-year-old Isauro Aguirre, of Palmdale, California, has been charged with the murder of 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez with a special circumstance of torture. The boy’s mother, Pearl Fernandez, also faces trial.

During opening statements on Monday (October 16), Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office prosecutor on Jon Hatami detailed the horrific abuse allegedly carried out by the couple.

Hatami explained that Aguirre and Fernandez beat and bit Gabriel, burned him with cigarettes, shot him with a B.B. gun, whipped him, starved him, fed him cat litter, and kept him gagged and bound before he was discovered on May 22, 2013.

That’s why we fight for gay rights. When you assume that gay people should lack any, YES, I SAY ANY, of rights that straight people have, you advocate for violence against LGBT+ community (including violence against children). This case shows clearly what happens when people assume that gay people are subhumans. We don’t know if little Gabriel actually was gay or not, but he died because of homophobia and extreme cruelty.
