elementals, canine version
[images are 6 paintings of wild canines with fantasy motifs: a maned wolf with smoke rising from its spine and tail, a grey wolf howling with an aurora-like trail of icy mist on its breath, an african wild dog with a riot of brown fungus growing from its spots, a fennec fox floating among several shards of dark stone, an inky-dark silver cross fox with a black smoky tail, and a glowing white arctic fox with a white smoky tail.]

Awwwwww LOVELY <3
the longer Iâm parenting-aged the more I realize how disciplinary oriented parenting styles are significantly more deranged than initially assumed
me as a teen watching a parent storm across a room to scream at a child for accidentally spilling paint: hm. This is not good.
me as an adult watching another adult storm across a room to scream at a vulnerable and still developing child for accidentally spilling paint: This is my villain origin story
as a parent now, it blows my fucking mind how terrifying, abusive, and straight up ineffective that parenting is. Iâve got a 2 year old. sheâs a smart little fucker. when she does something wrong, I tell her, âbaby, that wasnât okay. hereâs the reason it wasnât okay - (hurt feelings, hurt other peopleâs stuff, etc). I know you donât want to (hurt feeling, hurt stuff, etc), so next time, letâs (insert appropriate behavior) and that way, we wonât hurt people accidentally.â and you know what happens?
90% of the time, that behavior stops.
when the behavior continues, itâs when sheâs extremely frustrated that sheâs not getting a communication across. while sheâs incredibly smart, thereâs going to be some lapse in understanding between the two of us, and she lashes out by doing the things that she knows creates frustration in me, almost like sheâs trying to make me understand sheâs frustrated just like that.
so, I sit back down on her level. âbaby, I can see that youâre mad/frustrated/upset/sad. letâs work this out together. I really want to understand what is bothering you.â if itâs something that canât be done (stay awake from nap, eat sugary things before bedtime), then we find a compromise: you want to stay awake from nap to play with toys? letâs dig out an old toy you havenât played with in a while after your nap! weâll do it together and have lots of fun. you want something sugary right now? that will keep us awake for too long, but hereâs some *really tasty favorite fruit* for now, and tomorrow, letâs bake cookies together when you wake up.
sheâs two fucking years old. and she understands that shit. and now, often times, when she climbs into bed and she still wants to play, sheâll tell me, âtomorrow can we play with these toys, Mommy?â. she already understands compromise, and her behavior is fucking phenomenal.
I totally understand that it can be frustrating to parent. sometimes it feels like youâre hitting your head against a brick wall. BUT KIDS DONâT HAVE THE FUCKING ABILITY TO TURN ON THEIR LOGIC BRAIN WHEN THEYâRE HURTING EMOTIONALLY. WE, AS ADULTS, DO. and it is our fucking RESPONSIBILITY to help them turn their logic brain back on, and help them work thru that strong emotion, instead of punishing them by letting out our anger on them.
you know what would happen if I were to yell at my kid? sheâd yell back, louder, and now know that this is an acceptable way to react now, and Iâd effectively have made it hypocritical to tell her not to yell at me. bam.
you want to express extreme anger at a child for not having the emotional control that you arenât capable of even showing right now? not gonna help. at all. my kid comes to me to find compromises now. sheâs amazing. and sheâs not even 3 years old. if you, as a grown ass adult, are not fucking able to see your children as developing humans that need GUIDANCE, not BRUTAL, AGGRESSIVE ANGER, then you prob shouldnât have a goddamn kid.
I will be your hands || I will be your eyes
[for @plaidwatsontrash]
I drew a quick little comics essay today about a topic near and dear to my heart: horror for kids!
Or, âwhy some kids like to read books that scare them, and why you should let them.â
Breathtaking Wire Sculptures Capture the Fluidity of the Human Body
English artist Richard Stainthorp captures the beautiful energy and fluidity of the human body using wire. The life-sized sculptures feature both figures in motion and at rest, expressed in the form of large-gauged strands that are densely wrapped around and through one another. By doing this, he gives the work an undeniable presence. Stainthorp also allows the bent wires to shine by keeping their metallic appearance free from any obvious painting or additions.
I honestly like how the way Finland is set up doesnât⌠Really punish you for being stupid. You donât have to figure out how to file your taxes, they mail you a pre-filled tax statement of how they assume youâre doing and you only have to correct that in the parts that they got wrong. At my first job the people who did my job interview straight-up handed me the instructions on how to join the labour union of our field - the small fee for being a member would automatically be cut from my pay so thatâs not a bill I have to worry about. The workplace has someone working for the union that you can complain to directly, if you think something at your job isnât fair.
This also covers health care, which also covers mental health. If you have a solid contract, you canât be fired for mental health issues, whatever way they manifest. Theyâll put you on sick leave and arrange you help, or at the very least encourage you to get help. Psychiatric help is free.
If youâre male, the military service might be a strain, but they screen for mental health too and if you genuinely canât handle it, youâre let off. All you have to do is to be honest. Itâs also not hard to weasel your way out if youâre clever and motivated to do so. Also plenty of young people who werenât really motivated about anything in life but who are good at following instructions end up finding a good career in the army.
Thereâs probably more examples, these are just from my own life.
High school (lukio) isnât mandatory. If you know youâd rather be building houses or cutting hair you can straight away go and get educated at that.
If you ever have children there will be a nurse meeting every month for the first 6 months to make sure you know what you are doing.

if you don't add alt text, a caption, or a link, this is all the information screenreader users get about your screenshots
screenshots of text take an accessible format and make it unaccessible. it takes less clicks to copy the text of a tweet than it does to screenshot and crop it.
here is a guide on writing image descriptions.
caption your images. let disabled people in on your jokes too.
are you FUCKING kidding me. Theyâre doing this to prevent people from starting a 30 day trial and canceling it as soon as theyâre finished binge-watching their favorite tv shows. Theyâre doing it for even more money.
Pro tip: get the 30 day trial after your favorite tv shows episodes have all aired

i find it very telling that people are so ready to straight-up pathologize donald trump while mentioning his wealth and social status only in passing and almost never as the main reason for why heâs so persistently self-centered and disconnected from reality.
when you grow up rich youâre kind of by default disconnected from reality. you learn that you can just⌠make things happen. an expensive education? top-quality healthcare? a fancy seat on the plane? you just wave your credit card in the right direction AND IT HAPPENS. you get your way, every time, immediately, and to your exact specifications. youâre also immune to failure by default because if you fuck something up you can afford to start over, so even if you reach your 70s with a trail of financial disasters behind you, youâre still rich, so they canât have been that bad. youâre blind to your own incompetence. and youâre inevitably going to end up with very few, if any, genuine friends, especially if youâre inherently a bit of an asshole. instead youâll be surrounded by people pursuing their own agendas, who will tell you literally anything you want to hear: that youâre a genius, that everyone loves you, that you can successfully accomplish anything you set your mind to. which you totally can, of course, but because of your money, not your personal merit.
trump is not a pathological narcissist with the under-developed mind of a child and a half dozen other mental disorders experts have not yet reached a consensus about. heâs too used to being obscenely rich and likely never had a problem in his life he knew he couldnât solve by throwing enough money at it. and right now heâs angry that he canât use that to get his own way anymore.
like, thereâs enough stigma around mental illness without talking about it as if itâs the reason a rich entitled fuckhead is going to jump-start the nuclear apocalypse.
He also believes that âmaster raceâ bullshit.  He thinks rich white people are genetically superior.  This is a guy who has literally said he thinks success is genetic. Letâs be really explicit about this, most upperclass white people in the US do believe that bullshit that says they are genetically as well as morally superior to poor people and people of color.  Old school eugenics is still the norm among the wealthy in the US.  Trump isnât pushing eugenics by accident, heâs pushing eugenics because itâs what him and his buddies firmly believe. Â
And using ableism as the basis for attacking him isnât attacking his views and the ideas they rely on, itâs supporting them.
Impossible decision
Hank Green + his friends made a whole YouTube channel dedicated to videos explaining how to vote in every. single. state. None of them are longer than three and a half minutes. Deadlines to register are fast approaching in a lot of places so itâs incredibly important that everyone is well informed about what they need to do in order to exercise their right and make their voice heard. Go forth, America. Show up for what you believe in. Make good choices. Please.
