I learned recently that pinball machines were banned in major cities (New York, L.A., Chicago, etc.) from the 1930s to about the 1970s.

It was banned because the belief was that playing pinball would lead to more higher stacks gambling so getaway gambling if you will. (Like how cannabis was and sometimes is still seen as a getaway to harder drugs)

And the practice in Hollywood during the banned pinball years was to hint that a character was “bad news” by showing them playing pinball.

So now when I watch a movie that takes place or was created during the banned pinball years I will be keeping my eyes pealed for a pinball machine.

FYI: The last time I watched West Side Story (2021), I did spot a pinball machine in Doc’s.
