A little PSA for people who use AO3…

Gen refers to fic that is not focused on romance. If your fic is not a romance fic, please give it this tag.

Other refers to fic that is focused on romance, but is not specifically male/female, male/male, or female/female (like an OT3 (ship involving 3 people), a ship involving characters that are not male or female, etc). IT IS NOT FOR PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS. IT IS FOR ROMANTIC ONES. please for the love of all that is holy do not tag your family-relationship-centered fics as “other” you are going to give people a HEART ATTACK.

“Character/Character” is for romantic pairs. “Character & Character” is for platonic relationships like friendship, family, etc. Please do not tag family-centered or adult-and-minor-centered platonic character relationships as character/character for the love of all that is holy

The E rating is for smut and literally nothing else (unless you have other unusual reasons to rate it E–I’ve seen people apply it to non-smut fics as a deterrent to keep minors away from it, but keep in mind it’ll make it so people who are trying to avoid smut will not find your fic). Your fic that has a lot of graphic violence but no sexual content does not need an E rating.

The M rating is for fics that would basically be rated R if they were movies, and may contain graphic violence, some sexual content, and generally more serious subject matter than you would typically show a teenager. However, if your fic is almost entirely smut, please just give it an E rating.

Also, when you post a fic, you WILL want to give it a rating, or else AO3 will assume you’re probably posting smut and will warn everybody who clicks on your fic that it may contain adult content. If you don’t want that on your fic that contains no adult content at all, please just give it the proper rating instead of not rating it at all.

“Creator Chose Not to Archive Warnings” means that at least one or more of the archive warnings (that is, “Major Character Death,” “Graphic Depictions of Violence,” “Rape/Non-Con,” or “Underage”) DOES apply to your story, and you’re choosing not to say which one it is. If you select this option, AO3 will put a warning on the fic that potential readers have to click through.

“No Archive Warnings Apply” means that none of the aforementioned archive warnings apply to your fic.

two emendations:

1) Choose Not To Warn is also used for:

• no archive warnings apply, but there are definitely other warnings that apply, and the author doesn’t want to tag which • author wants tension to exist about whether a major character is going to die, and admitting up front that either one does or one does not would make that difficult • author chooses not to use the archive warnings box regardless of the content of their work (or forgot to click anything in this box before posting)

these are all legit uses of CNTW! not necessarily best helpful on the reader end, I admit, but valuable on the author end!

2) “Mature” and “Explicit” are different intensities of content one would not want to see in a PG-13 movie

it is not one is for violence and one is for smut; please for the love of fuck tag your super-detailed-torture hurt/comfort fics Explicit because they are high intensity and reserve the Mature rating for violence for things about as intensely detailed as the smut you’d rate Mature because it isn’t descriptive enough to rate Explicit

if neither the hurt nor the comfort has any sexual component, then absolutely tag to say so, because most of what is rated Explicit is indeed smut and somebody wanting kinky smut is not going to be happy to find this fic instead! but the Explicit rating is not reserved for smut!

For the love of beautiful phantom horses, “Explicit” is not just for smut. This is not even getting into the fact that age ratings are deeply influenced by cultural norms (e.g. anything that involves even simulated gambling gets an 18+ rating in Korea, German media rated 12+ can get away with a lot more sex and a lot less violence than US media rated PG-13), but if you are writing a fic with detailed and graphic depictions of either violence or sex, you put that “Explicit” rating on there. Ask youself “if I were to sell this story as a movie, which rating would it get for theaters?” and then err on the side of caution.

I currently have three fics rated E for explicit, and none of them involve sex. All of them involve graphic content that I’m fairly certain could be deeply disturbing for readers (two include graphic depictions of torture, two include the violent murder of innocent characters–the one fic that has both remains, to this day, one of my least read, least commented fics and I completely get why).

Things I Wish I Knew Earlier In Fandom

But maybe these will help somebody now.

Most of your fandom experience is shaped by who you follow. Find a good group of people and stick with them.

Support your favs and a lot of them will become your friends, or at least be friendly back to you.

Just unfollow people who bring unwanted content or negativity onto your dash.

Block people who cause you stress. It’s not worth your time to focus on parts of fandom that don’t make you happy.

Blacklisting words/tags is a tool you are allowed to use as much as you need to.

Don’t feel like you have to pretend to like things that make you uncomfortable in order to fit in. Set healthy boundaries for yourself.

Never tag your hate. Never send hate anons to someone.

Content creators love getting comments, seeing people gush in the tags on reblogs, and getting fans in their inbox. It’s the best way to motivate them to keep making awesome stuff.

If there’s certain content you want to see but it doesn’t exist yet, then make it. Draw the thing, write that fic. If you can’t, then comission an artist or writer, or send someone a prompt if they’re open to it. If you can’t do that either, then write meta or headcanons about it. Put it into the world.

Create what you love. Do it for yourself first and foremost, and if even one other person likes it too, then that’s a bonus.
