I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."
If you have a fucked up sicknasty fanfic you've been thinking about sharing but are unsure, this post is your sign to run to AO3 and Just Do It: 1. Someone somewhere wants to read it. Even if it's only one person, that person matters
2. Your creativity matters and so does your ability to share it
3. Serial harassers in fandom spaces are beginning to express discomfort that sites like AO3 completely strip their ability to do anything about fic they don't like, sometimes going as far as leaving entire fandoms due to the influx of "problematic fiction without a chance for consequences to the author". Posting your fanworks to AO3 actively contributes to making harassers feel unsafe and powerless in fandom
4. Militant anti-fanfic content creators also cannot do anything about fic posted to AO3
5. You can post anonymously to AO3, with the ability to de-anonymize at any time
6. You can moderate comments before making them visible on your fic, restrict comments to logged-in users only, or turn off comments altogether, meaning you can post anonymously and completely turn off comments if you choose
Fanfiction is insane. You can write porn so good you make friends.
I do really love it when women write graphic and fucked up things. I feel like so often people react to fucked up fiction with “of course a disgusting man would write this 🙄” and it often carries an unspoken (honestly sometimes spoken) message of “a woman’s PURE and DELICATE and FEMININE mind could NEVER think of something this VILE”. Thank you women in fucked up fiction 🫡
Something so funny about rereading one's own unfinished fics. Like wow this is pretty good! Almost as if it was written exactly according to what I personally like in fact! Someone should finish it!
writing is so fun
writing is impossible why does anyone do this
writers and artists everywhere all the time
why not have the reader re-read a sentence now and then? it won't hurt him....
something i find really interesting about (some) people who don't write is the way they'll elevate plot over execution? it's the way you'll sometimes see people who think they have a best-selling book idea, and they want someone to write it for them while thinking they should get the lion's share of the imaginary profits, because it's their idea. and don't get me wrong, ideas are important! plots are important!
but there are so many stories i've read over the years that could be summarized into a few sentences of bland-sounding plot, and it's the execution that matters. it's the writing. it's the writing!
a talented writer can turn a bland plot into a story you want to devour. and someone who only cares about ideas can take the most interesting idea ever conceived and make it unreadable/unwatchable.
like it does feel like there are a Lot of people in this world who don't view writing as a skill that deserves respect, and who think that really it's all about coming up with shiny ideas. and it does feel like that's uhhh infected a LOT of different things in the modern world. tbh.
fanfic is extremely hard
Hey! Just a reminder! AO3 does NOT have an app. This garbage was made by theives who steal fan artist’s work and sell it back to you.
“Oh, but it’s free!” There are ads. They are making money off of this. They are stealing from the creators you love and you are hurting those same creators if you use this app or any similar app.
Don’t use it. Report it at every opportunity.
To summarize it overall:
App acts like a browser but paywalls offline reading while reviews state it’s full of intrusive ads and lacks basic functionality such as commenting. Do not use this app. Use the ao3 website. The app uses Gen-AI content for imagery on categories and is essentially forcing people to pay if they want to read your fics offline.
By the way you don’t have to pay anything to read fics offline. You can do it for free using easily accessible resources that don’t cost anything.
You do not need to pay $1 every week, $2 every month, or even $18 a year. It can be done free! By anyone!
You can also turn ao3 into an app itself by adding it to your Home Screen. You don’t need to download shady apps.
The way to read fics offline is by downloading them onto your device. AO3 lets you do this, in multiple file formats, right at the top of the page:
If you don't have a PDF reader on your phone, there are any free ones (I personally like ReadEra). Or you download it as HTML.
AO3 doesn't have an app, and doesn't need an app. Don't fall for this. There's no telling what they'll do with your login data.
writing is easy actually. all you have to do is tell people what happened
Write it badly or it'll never be written

Please keep interacting with this post because when I come to tumblr to procrastinate, this shows up again in my notifications and guilts me into writing again
affirmation: I am capable of finishing the works of pornographic fanfiction I start writing
i love fake plot holes
little inconsistencies that at first you assume "oh, the author must have fucked up", but then later on you realize that no, it was on purpose, they wanted you to think they fucked up but they hadnt
related: when you think "this has Implications the author didn't think about" and then it turns out the author was thinking about them the whole time
As an author this is my favourite thing to do to people. It feels like cheating and I love cheating.
It does have one horrible side effect though, which is that after your readers have shrugged, politely overlooked and forgotten a couple of tiny "plot holes" only for you to shank them in the back later using them as deliberate clues for a twist, you never get a real tiny plot hole overlooked again, because you have trained readers to treat every inconsistency they can find as deeply complex foreshadowing and they will actively seek and memorise them.
Okay but consider: that makes for really good stories.
