The maker appears to have deliberately flaked around the shell to preserve and place it in a central position. As a result this handaxe has been described as an early example of artistic thought.

Every couple days I think about how fucked up it is that Bellamy and Clarke's whole shtick was that they were better together, two parts of a whole (the heart and the head), that they couldn't and didn't want to live without each other, that they always found their way back to each other, that in such a fucked up world where they had taken the burden of humanity on their shoulders they realized again and again how much better and lighter life was when they shared the burden together, but we're supposed to think they were just friends?
