A Letter to a Friend
I captured the pain of ancestry, depression, psychosis, inferiority, and isolation in a song for the PotF soundtrack. I shall send it to thine soon. I had a major downward spiral this week, and when I was at the brink of surrendering to self-destruction, I got out mine guitar and began to use it to express my pain, I hacked away with a strong pick like it did my own skin a knife, and recorded for several hours in a state of delirium, pain, and nausea. The next morning I got back up and put myself together, and then proceeded to improvise choral arrangements over what I had played on the guitar. I sang into the microphone with the gusto of pain, and indeed it was an experience of catharsis.
Profiles of the Forgotten went into serious pre-production the summer of 2013, and here I am almost a year later, finishing up the programming and post-production in my apartment in Los Angeles, far away from solitude or nature of any kind. I had a relapse into these very special memories of a time during which I had absolute freedom to work on the opus and hone in - without school or work to get in the way.
During early October of 2013, I cast Ian Johnston and Teagan Rose as two of the main characters in Profiles of the Forgotten, Jason and The Stepsister. Several days before the shooting weekend, we took a couple hours of the afternoon to rehearse. It was a cool, overcast autumn day in Ann Arbor, MI, and we went to Gallup Park to try out a few scenes. The above video was shot on a t3i as we rehearsed one of the hinge moments in the PotF story. I remember that Ian stood behind me and watched the LCD monitor on the camera. As Teagan looked away, Ian said with a voice of astonishment "That looks amazing."
Something fantastic was emerging into reality.
At that moment I realized just how fortunate I was to be working with these talented young artists. I was surprised how naturally they would bring to life the nuances of the PotF world. It was going to be an amazing experience and that it was. As I and The Lord Dylan often recall, the creation of Profiles was one of the happiest times of our lives. Indeed it was, full of the majesty of Autumn in the Midwest, the grandeur of Lake Huron, and the hauntingly extraordinary spirit of East Tawas, Michigan.

"Elisabet, can I read a bit of my book to you? Or am I disturbing you? Listen to this…
The anxiety we carry with us, all our broken dreams, the inexplicable cruelty, the fear of death, the painful insight into our earthly condition… …have worn out our hope of a divine salvation. The cries of our faith and doubt against the darkness and the silence are terrible proof of our Ioneliness and fear.
Do you think it’s like that? I don’t believe that.”
Bergman the master.
