Jeryl, #21: “We’re in the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain?”
“Jesus?” He prepped his knife. “Jesus?!”
“Out here!” The voice was calm, pleasant…totally at ease.
Knife still at the ready Daryl poked his head out onto the balcony. No Walkers, no others, just Jesus on a deckchair with his head tipped back into the rain. “Hell you doin’?”
Water rolled across his face, dripped from his hair, as he opened his eyes. “Sitting back, relaxing, enjoying the moment.”
“We’re in the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain?”
“Nah,” Daryl set his bag down and leaned against the doorframe, watching the sheets of rain pass by. “I ain’t catchin’ the flu and dyin’ on account of your dumb ass.”
“I’ll make it worth your while.”
“You gonna turn all this rain into wine?” Daryl cracked.
Jesus chuckled. “If I try, will you come out?”
Despite his own snide expression Daryl found himself stepping out into the storm. It was strangely calming; the warm air, the cleansing rain, the low rumble of thunder in the distance.
“Nice, isn’t it?” Jesus kicked out the other deckchair.
Daryl sunk into the plastic. “It’s alright.”
“That your standard reply?”
“What’m I supposed to say?”
“Well, if you like it, you might want to try ‘it’s nice’ or ‘I like it’.”
Jesus smirked. “Why’s that?”
“What’s this, some kinda test?” Daryl’s growl edged up on irritated.
“No,” Jesus straightened up to look him in the eye. “I just want to know what you really think, Daryl.” And getting him to talk about his feelings on the weather seemed easier than his feelings on other things. “I like that it’s able to wash away so much decay, that it can make room for new growth, you know?”
Daryl watched Jesus stick out his tongue to collect rain water, then quickly looked away. He cleared his throat, shifted lower in the chair as he splayed his legs. “I like I got the option to go back inside if I want.”
Jesus gave a nod. That was something deeper, at least. “Just say the word, we’ll go back inside.”
Daryl considered the offer, then shook his head. “Nah, it’s alright.”
“That’s not very convincing…” Jesus started to get up. He wanted to press Daryl, see what he would do; would he go along or open up?
“Nah, rain’s nice,” Daryl set a hand on Jesus’, but pulled away the moment he realized he’d done it. “I mean…saw towels in the room, we can dry off later so…” he shrugged, shifted in an excess of nerves. “Ya know, let’s stay out here a bit longer, yeah?”
Jesus smiled gently, settled back down. “Yeah. I like it.”
