He doesn’t come home that evening. He doesn’t call Louise or Abigail to say why. He just drives, instead, drives for miles compelled by an impulse he can neither name nor shake. This is the only choice now.
He stops when he gets to Duluth, drives past Elise Nichols’s house a few times, stalling. He thinks about her, about carrying her like an oversized doll through the window, cold and limp. Thinks about tucking her sheets up around her like tucking Abigail into bed. Thinks about her parents, who’ve lost their little girl. They’re better than him if they can bear it.
The cancer might have taken her anyway. Mrs. Nichols is looking out the window, but doesn’t see his car. He mouths “I’m sorry” and drives away.
He decides to call the tip line from a payphone near the station. He tells them he’s the one they’re calling the Minnesota Shrike. The officer has clearly had too many confessions from too many nutjobs; Garret grits his teeth.
“Elise Nichols had liver cancer. I found it when I cut her.” That shuts up Mr. That’s-Very-Interesting-Do-You-Read-Tattlecrime right quick. “I couldn’t honor her like the others. It was wrong. It was just murder. So I tried to fix her and I took her home.”
He leans against the glass, eyes shut. “Take me in or I’ll hurt someone else. I will. I’ll hurt my little girl. I’ve got no choice.”
He numbly gives his location; if he drove the rest of the way himself he would likely drive into a tree instead. They come for him and he kneels in the red-blue-red-blue lights with his hands behind his head. In a hotel nearby, Will Graham dreams of Elise Nichols, and of a stag in the woods, and will not kill anyone tomorrow. Abigail Hobbs will cut her finger slicing an orange and not shed a drop of blood more. Hannibal Lecter will eat breakfast alone.
The wheels of fate turn and click out of place.
