Dean's conversation right after meeting Cas in Purgatory is definitely a declaration of love. He was NOT leaving without him. He prayed for him every night. He put himself in danger both to find him and to keep staying next to him. We all have to remember that he is so emotionally constipated that he would prefer to cut his own arm than to talk about his own feelings.

Every day I learn something new about Dean’s bisexuality. WHAT DO YOU MEAN “HUGGY BEAR” (how he calls Cas) IS FROM A TV SHOW THAT IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS “FRENCH-KISSING PRIMETIME HOMOS”???? And Dean is canonically a fan? OH.

I guess every person who believes in bi!Dean has ever thought “but why has this silly guy never come out? He’s obviously flustered by men but he never really tries”.

And!

There’s the cut scene from 14x14, “Ouroboros”, where Dean says John used him as a bait for evil truckers.

And if we think more than a second, we can see young Dean with his big green eyes and plump lips, playing innocence and taking dirty hints to distract the monster.

So. One more time.

Dean knocks on the door, smiles, flirts, winks and finally gets inside.

John is getting ready. Dean is still in the truck cabin with a lustful monster.

How far is he going? Hardly think John cares. He’s waiting for the perfect moment, while Dean is being touched or maybe even kissed, because Dean is a good soldier. And good soldiers don’t ruin the Hunt.

It wasn’t one time or two.

“Dad made me do it all the time”.

Dean was being touched by men against his will constantly, so over time he just couldn’t perceive gay people as he used to do.

We all talk about John being homophobic, but what if it wasn’t the reason?

What if Dean just couldn’t imagine himself with a man and not see all these truck drivers instead?

What if that’s why he never flirts with men in early seasons.

He still remembers too well. He still sees not enough positive examples.

What if that’s why a little later even drunk he could only flirt, but not sleep with men. Because sleep means lust. And men’s lust is disgusting and dangerous.

What if only years later he watches “Brokeback mountain” for the first time, witnesses Jack Twist’s love and yearning and pain and thinks “wow. that was pure. that was real”.

What if the process we can see through all the seasons is not a getting rid of the internalized homophobia, but a healing?

I think part of the reason why there's so many different opinions on why Dean and Cas didn't confess to each other sooner (repression, sublimation, internalised biphobia, afraid they'd lose each other etc) is because destiel should have and would have gone canon years ago if the cw wasn't the cw. This leaves us having to answer a question the narrative was begging to not have to ask in the first place.

I can't remember where I've read this, but someone made the point that the show had to kill both of them off because the writers had written themselves into a corner.

If both of them had survived or even if just Dean had survived it would have been glaringly obvious that Dean wasn't looking for a partner because he already had one.

like i really can’t emphasize enough that amara is structurally not a love interest for dean in any way, and the pull that he feels towards her is clearly not romantic in nature. what she IS is an unsubtle metaphor for suicidality. she’s the call of the void. the draw dean feels to join with her is the draw towards eternal peace and permanent annihilation of the self (in a way that regular death isn’t when you chronically come back to life). the shame he feels about his desire for her is shame that he feels a desire to give up, to give in to eternal nothingness. dean fighting against amara’s call is him fighting against the depression he’s been dealing with intermittently for many many years! just because it’s more allegorical than in season 2 or season 5 or season 7 or season 13 doesn’t mean it’s not there.

anyone else ever think about how "the man who would be king" is framed as castiel's prayer to his father for a sign as to whether or not he's on the right path, and it ends with him defeated, thinking that there is no sign. but that sign. was literally dean. he tells cas at the end of the episode that he isn't going to "logic" him with reasons about why opening purgatory is a bad idea, and instead asks cas to stop, "just cause." he demands that cas have faith in his judgement the same way god asks for blind faith. and that. that was cas' sign.

The thing is, you can say Dean fell in love with Cas because Cas chose him over Heaven. And you can say Cas fell in love with Dean because Dean was the first one to treat him like a person instead of a tool. And maybe those things mattered. But above anything else, Dean fell in love with who Cas is, and Cas fell in love with who Dean is, not with what the other could do for them.
