âI donât want to look back at my career and see a string of incredibly commercial projects that donât have much heart. Iâm looking for things that have soul.â
one of the most important things to me about harry potter is its portrayal of happiness. in the harry potter world, happiness isnât just a feelingâitâs a weapon. look at how harry and his friends fight: with riddikulus, laughter stymies a creature made of fear; with expecto patronum, the very memory of happiness beats back the grim forces of depression.
the weaponization of positivity stretches beyond that. fred and george weasleyâs inventions, meant for laughter, turn into arms against umbridgeâs regime. and after their departure from hogwarts, their joke shop becomes not only the single bright spot in diagon alley (literally & figuratively) but a hub of defensive magic. the whole weasleysâ wizard wheezes narrative serves as maybe the clearest example in the series that happiness can act as both shield and sword.
there is something deeply empowering in a depiction of happiness as something so tangible and usable. as a profoundly depressed person, i often feel myself scrounging for happy memories and clutching them close; i find myself grasping for laughter in the dark. the physicalization of expecto patronum is not a quantum leap from reality. the boggartâs laughter as combat fuel, the weasleysâ levity as not just a choice but a difficult and defiant oneâitâs all familiar.
the series has its share of darkness, but it revels most in the light. it lets us believe that the act of joy is not small, trivial, or inconsequential. happiness is something not just to be livedâit is to be wielded, on your own behalf and the behalves of the people around you, to battle against the worldâs heavier elements. harry potter teaches us this.
Shut up Thompson, this is totally how season 2 is gonna start.

Those last two lines are so important, though.Â
Errors in Thinking that Create Anxiety
1. All-or-nothing thinking: Looking at things in black-or-white categories, with no middle ground (âIf I fall short of perfection, Iâm a total failure.â)
2. Overgeneralization: Generalizing from a single negative experience, expecting it to hold true forever (âI didnât get hired for the job. Iâll never get any job.â)
3. The mental filter: Focusing on the negatives while filtering out all the positives. Noticing the one thing that went wrong, rather than all the things that went right.
4. Diminishing the positive: Coming up with reasons why positive events donât count (âI did well on the presentation, but that was just dumb luck.â)
5. Jumping to conclusions: Making negative interpretations without actual evidence. You act like a mind reader (âI can tell she secretly hates me.â) or a fortune teller (âI just know something terrible is going to happen.â)
6. Catastrophizing: Expecting the worst-case scenario to happen (âThe pilot said weâre in for some turbulence. The planeâs going to crash!â)
7. Emotional reasoning: Believing that the way you feel reflects reality (âI feel frightened right now. That must mean Iâm in real physical danger.â)
8. âShouldsâ and âshould-notsâ: Holding yourself to a strict list of what you should and shouldnât do and beating yourself up if you break any of the rule
9. Labeling: Labeling yourself based on mistakes and perceived shortcomings (âIâm a failure; an idiot; a loser.â)
10. Personalization: Assuming responsibility for things that are outside your control (âItâs my fault my son got in an accident. I should have warned him to drive carefully in the rain.â)

Agent Director Peggy Carter in the 21st century AU where sheâs living in Avengers tower and âOh look, Thorâs left his hammer on top of those files I need. Silly bugger.â
Thor and Steve walk into the room as she picks it up, retrieves her stack from the coffee table, nonchalantly places mjolnir back down. âWhat are you two gaping at!?â Thor shakes Steveâs hand and proceeds to parade her around the tower on his shoulders, loudly declaring her worthiness.
why is this not on my feed????
When they ask why sheâs unruffled, she responds with âI know my value.â
