as you finished up your last touches on your hair, you looked over at the time on your alarm clock. 7:01. Technically lucas was already late, which was unlike his usual self, but in the past few months Lucas has become so absorbed with max. He would sit in the hospital all day watching her every move, watching for a sign.

of course you understood. max was your best friend, and you spent your fair share of time in the hospital right next to lucas or on your own watching and waiting for the same signs. a flutter of the eye. rapid breathing. a flinch. anything.

the difference was that you never were late when you were supposed to be meeting lucas somewhere or had gone days without seeing him because he was stuck in the hospital with his eyes on her. he was putting her before you. his girlfriend. yeah sure he was concerned for his friend and he had that right, but you couldn't help the jealousy that would begin to bubble up inside every time he let you down to be with her.

and today? today was supposed to be him making up for that. every time he was late or absent he felt so bad after the fact. so, he said he was going to take you to a nice dinner. on time. you had your doubts,, but he pleaded his case so well, "y/n i promise. no no, i pinky promise; that was the last time. i will be there at seven o clock sharp. maybe even six fifty five."

now here you were. there was no lucas. no flowers. no bright smile on his face that warmed your insides. he was late. but he pinky promised, maybe he just got caught up trying to leave his house, or he got stuck in traffic.

your mind spiraled fight in between being mad at lucas and giving him excuses, and as your mind spiraled the minutes flew by.

you were now sat across from each other. two paper plates with pizza on them, and lucas was trying too explain how he had ended up over two hours late from your house. "i wasn't at the hospital y/n." He looked up at you, his eyes pleading for some sign that you hadn't completely written him off already in your head.

"i was actually getting ready i promise you, y/n. I was about to walk out the door and before i could even do that my mom stopped me and said i had to watch erica and tina for the night." He reached out his hands to hold yours from across the table. "she wouldn't let me leave, and I had to explain to her why i had to come get you."

you watched as his eyes went from your hands conjoined together until they reached your own. his rich brown eyes now glossy. "i saw what time it was. i knew that i was already late, and she just wouldn't listen." he squeezed your hands tighter, almost as if he was trying to ensure you were still listening. "i was so scared, y/n. i was scared that by the time ii made it here you wouldn't want to even see my face."

"for the record, I didn't," you added laughing softly. "but i understand lucas, and i forgive you." he couldn't help but smile when he heard those words roll of your tongue.
