im the stanliest in this parable
thinks about one character falling asleep against the others shoulder in a moment of exhaustion and feeling safe for once. and explodes

This phrase has already entered my vocabulary re: media criticism where like. The viewer has a concrete view of what they expect a story to be based on the tropes and cliches they're used to seeing together, and when that doesn't happen, they judge it as a failed depiction of what they assumed it was going to be instead of judging it as what it actually is.
"This show is problematic because the hero didn't kill the villain at the end": When does he steal the bread?
"These two characters who were close friends throughout the series don't kiss at the end! What the fuck?": When does he steal the bread?
"This feels like it's missing a conclusion! Like, the protagonist does bad stuff and because of a critical decision he makes as a result of his major character flaws, meets tragedy in the end! Where's the part where he learns better and brings is love back from the dead and becomes a good guy and gets a happy ending?": When does he steal the fucking bread??
I heard this out as "When criticizing something, you must judge it for what it is, not what it isn't"
#this is why so many of us urge people to get a wider diet of stories
I will never ever tire of the dynamic where both people involved are awkward and weird on their own, but in each others' eyes they're the most beautiful, wonderful, INCREDIBLE person. AND THEY'RE RIGHT IN THINKING THIS
they can keep making horror games but nothing will ever be as creepy and unsettling to me as the empty office of the stanley parable
back when the game first came out, the office was already creepy to me, but what made it fucking terrifying was. so there’s this random event that can sometimes happen while you’re walking around in there, right? in this empty office, “all of his coworkers were gone”, where the absence is what’s making this place have absolutely freaky as shit vibes. liminal space, as the kids might put it nowadays. but there’s a very rare event where Sometimes, while you’re in there, you’ll look through one of the windows in the office to another hallways, and someone else will be walking down it.
i had no idea this could happen when I first played, so you can just imagine. little nine year old bug. a decade out from being properly medicated for anxiety, and full of video game creepypastas. playing this Funny Game™️ just like the youtubers are doing and already shaken up by the gnawing paranoia that empty office elicited in me. only to turn a corner. and see something that was not me moving in the corner of my eye before disappearing again. i quit that shit while hyperventilating and crying, it scared me so bad.
anyway so what i’m saying is that i get why everyone wants there to be a Monster in their backrooms, and i don’t think that’s ever taken away from the creepy factor of it. because the emptiness and quiet is Awful, yes, but once you adjust to the fact that these places that should not be empty are empty, then you still have an expectation of what it’s like there going forward. it is uncomfortable that it’s empty but this place Should be empty.
and then. after you finally accept that. what if something that wasn’t you fucking moved.
Do you ever feel tender about the relationship Perihelion inadvertently ends up having with Arada? This was its temporary captain, its liaison with all these new humans cluelessly crawling around inside it, and the one calling many of the shots on the operation that ended up rescuing every member of its crew (and later, Murderbot), against great odds.
Arada's not family the way Seth is, but she's the one who kept everyone organized and focused on the goal of getting its family back.
taking off a mask to reveal what lies beneath as a romantic gesture is overdone, and besides i want to see the romantic or even platonic potential of protecting someone's identity beneath the mask, without any expectation of ever being allowed to see what's under it. picking it up and holding it gently to their face when it's knocked off and they're in danger of being exposed, without trying to catch a glimpse of what they "really" look like under there. throwing yourself in front of them to hide them from view while they put themselves back together without taking advantage or looking back to see what you're protecting. learning to read them by body language, tone of voice, and behaviour so well that you never need to see their face to feel like you know and understand them.
and needless to say. the mask stays on during sex.
“I’ve fucked everything up,” I’d told ART. This was when I was in Medical after my “incident.” Mensah and I had called Amena so she wouldn’t worry (or at least so she would know that I was still alive, even I know that’s important for human children). I told Mensah I wanted to watch media and she had left, and I’d blocked the humans’ comm and feed access to the room.
ART had said, That’s nothing new.
I ignored that because it was just trying to reassure me. If it started being sympathetic it would be terrifying. “Your crew isn’t going to want me to do their security anymore.”
Why is that?
That question was obviously a trap and I should ignore it. It wasn’t as if I could put the answer into words. I was different. It wasn’t just the alien contamination.
What came out was, “Something in me broke.”
System Collapse, Martha Wells
i think we've overdone time loops on here to be honest, ghost loops though... there's something so play-like about them, the ghosts are always the same the script the story beats it's unending. maybe you can break the loop maybe you can't the only thing you can do for certain is witness it but at what point does that become voyeuristic or do you become trapped in the loop as well do you see do you see
the will of velzie, of course
