The amazing thing about rereading p&p (and/or rewatching the 1995 version) is that the first time around I wholeheartedly believed Lizzy's judgment (maybe I'm just a fool idk), but I was completely on board the "oh, Mr Darcy hates her, he's an ass and he stares at her to blow her up with his mind" train and the first proposal came completely out of the left field. But the second time I could actually see how it would make sense from his perspective. That poor stupid arrogant man had no idea that Lizzy was chewing him up in her mind and to her family for half the time. For him - they were basically flirting. They were stealing glances at each other, danced together, she would banter with him, like that man literally thought he had it in the bag! He thought he would only have to go against his family/entire social circle/his own logical part of brain, and when it turned out that this list included the bride-to-be he literally blue screened. God, they're both so stupid and so full of themselves and so, so human... I love them.

the ‘95 version (and the Lizzie Bennet Diaries) really highlights how much Lizzy freaking hates this dude after he refuses to dance with her and then proceeds to call her mid while looking at her and in his head he’s just like “oh, this girl is actually super cute and wow she’s got an incredible wit, I think I love her, I think I’ll marry her!” and then he proposes and she’s like

obi-wan kenobi only looks like a respectable, even-tempered rule-follower because he's standing next to Anakin "what are rules" Skywalker and Ahsoka "i know the rules but i don't give a shit" Tano. the moment he's alone, and not being forced to keep anyone in check, he is JUST as chaotic as the other two, if not more because he DOES know the rules and he DOES give a fuck so the fact that he's breaking them means he REALLY wants to ruin someone's day

Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually don’t think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you can’t point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.

one of the tragedies of twin peaks that often gets overlooked (something that’s easy to do with anything david lynch created, his art has an adversarial relationship to the viewer on purpose) is that the one person we’re led to believe could have saved laura if he had come sooner still wouldn’t have been able to save her because Special Agent Dale Cooper is too enamored with twin peaks and loving the town means being unable to see what it’s doing to laura. coop is a character and therefore doesn’t have the same perspective as the audience, meaning he can’t see the town as the antagonist. to him, the town is just a town with great coffee and cherry pie, and failing to see the town as the thing that killed laura means she still dies even if the person who could stop it is there.

Congrats to Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios for having the sheer audacity. Had a single life or death encounter with the enemy, proceeded to decide that was His Man, gave him exactly one (1) talking to about the dangers of fascism, and then promptly fucked off.
