Javi's dad didn't want the dog in the bed. Javi always nodded like he understood the rule, waited until the house went quiet, then lifted the blanket and whispered, "Come on. But be quiet."

By morning, the dog would be curled up against his legs, and Javi would have one arm around him. Sometimes his dad would open the door, see them together, and just shake his head.
