People going to watch the Odyssey and expecting a faithful adaptation of the book are either stupid or it's their first time going to the movies. Like, Nolan is very obviously going to make changes the way he did with the Titanic and Batman and now the Odyssey. People will be able to point out familiar things and be very "I understood that reference" but the guy was very obviously not going to have a perfect 1 to 1 adaptation of a 3000 year old book.

For a movie that goes superficially over the events in the book, it's pretty decent. I'm not happy about the Nobody joke being missed and I don't think it was impossible to adapt the way he said, but it doesn't ultimately matter because his hubris was shown during the Siren song and during his other orders. I am pissed that they didn't have the whole thing of him faking a mental illness to avoid having to go to war because I think that's a genuinely important moment for Odyssesus' characterization though. I suppose for the kind of character they were going for it might not have worked, or they just didn't want the protagonist to look cowardly which is a stupid thing to worry about when you're trying to adapt a book about a strategist who is in fact cowardly in situations and uses this fear to become a better strategist.

I didn't mind the changes they made for Penelope though. Like sure, her wanting to rule is being called "21st century girlboss" but idk why it's difficult to imagine that women at the time might have wanted to rule and to have their opinions be given the same amount of weight as men. That's not a new thing for anyone.

Anyway, it's a decent anti-war movie with Odyssey as a backdrop.

'Huge' fall in FGM rates for African girls

Activists say female genital mutilation is still common in Africa - but a study finds it is falling.

There’s been a massive fall in FGM rates across the African continent for girls under 14.

The figures are all taken roughly 20 years apart, in the mid 90s and then in the late 2010s. The rate in Western African has gone from 74% to 25%, in Northern Africa it’s gone from 60% to 14%.

Across the continent the overall rate has gone from 71% to 8%. 

This is just huge. I’m finding it difficult to wrap my head around the scale of it, the number of children those percentages represent. It feels like such a huge shift. It’s millions of girls growing up safer and healthier. 

And the researchers are saying their mothers are the driving force.

Freaks tend to reason “sex is not inherently traumatizing, ergo molestation is not that bad. Just a perception thing.” I take the opposite perspective. I think sex is an inherently fraught, vulnerable, loaded experience. And it makes sense you need adult cognition and confidence to navigate it without repercussion. People treat TIMs fears and women’s fears vastly different.

A TIM scared to go outside and scared to interact with people, including other men, is considered by progressives and leftists not paranoid, but reasonably fearful. It’s such a scary time to be trans, they say. There’s a genocide going on, they claim. It’s perfectly understandable that a trans woman is scared and wants his transfem spaces, his communities, his transfem specific resources.

A woman is scared to be around men, wants her own spaces of just women, or goes out of her way to avoid men, she’s being paranoid. She’s just been watching too much true crime. Not every man is out to get her, she’s so emotionally swayed by online stories that aren’t even true. She needs to go to therapy, it’s not other people’s responsibility to deal with her trauma, she just shouldn’t go outside if she’s so scared.
