thinking about Data & Deanna Troi, who may look like polar opposites on the surface (one feels everything, the other feels nothing), but they both recognize in the other the experience of being unique and surrounded by people who feel regular emotions. yes i say unique for Deanna too because she does not experience telepathy like her fully Betazoid peers either, she's the only human-betazoid she knows, just like Data doesn't know anyone with a brain built like his, not even Lore. and the way Deanna and Data try to understand each other is different from the way their human crewmates try to understand either one of them. the care and respect with which they both approach the other's perception of the world is what makes their friendship so special to me.

I feel like we’ve lost the plot when it comes to criticism. People these days seem to think that there’s an objective number you can quantify to determine a movie’s quality. If it’s not CinemaSins it’s Rotten Tomatoes. It’s all the same nonsense.

When I was younger I had these books: “The Nitpicker’s Guide for Classic Trekkers.” The title alone was a play on the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so you knew right away not to take it seriously.

Inside these books, every single episode and movie of classic Star Trek was laid out. First with a summary of what happened, then a list of “nitpicks” detailing mistakes or trivia the writer found. These could be anything from simple wardrobe malfunctions, to incorrect turbo-lift numbers, to genuine plot holes.

All of it was done with a tongue in cheek way. You weren’t supposed to take these seriously. The idea that someone would dedicate THIS MUCH TIME to nitpicking a sci-fi TV show was part of the in-joke.

Then something weird happened during the mid 2000’s, and now nitpicking and listing off “sins” for films has become a quantifiable metric people will actually use.

Which is stupid.

Art is subjective. No amount of legitimate continuity errors makes a film automatically good or bad if the positive feelings it creates resonates with you. This is one of the reasons why people love watching “bad” movies.

I just really dislike that something we used to do for fun to show how much we loved a show/movie has turned into this really negative hateful past time and commodified thing. Especially for Star Trek, the show that unironically has episodes like “Spock’s Brain.”

Data's hands are so delicate. His entire manner of holding himself is very elegant and delicate, I could easily imagine him in 17th century wig and clothes, yet he never, for a second looks consious about it. It just comes off so naturally. The way he touches the control table on the brigde, it looks like playing an instrument.

Vulcan is a desert planet, especially the area Spock is from. Those dorks can handle HEAT what they can’t handle is humidity.

you know how for a lot of people being in heat makes them turn Evil(Tm)? Humidity does that to Vulcans. No one notices except for the Vulcans themselves but put these guys in a wet/damp (hot or cold) planet and they’re ten seconds away from breaking a table in half. They’re been talking about philosophy for an hour, no voices have been raised but phrases are getting shorter and shorter. Everyone around them is Worried.

I think Spock can adapt better to the humidity due to his human half but he’s still not used to it at all. Jim takes him to a hot water spring, and there’s a solid five minutes before they get into the water where Spock considers the pros and cons of breaking up with Jim Right Now just so he can return to the ship.

Vulcans purr in their sleep, during healing trances, and even in meditation. It is considered the norm for a young, Vulcan child to purr constantly, as they almost always in a state of content/serenity

Vulcan’s becoming still like statues after someone pinches the back of their neck, a purely primal reaction, as it is the way Vulcan’s carry their young

Vulcan hair becoming fluffed up/spiky when in states of distress, fear or panic. Vulcan’s making those anxious chittering noises that cats make when nervous
