Chapter Seven - No Time to Breathe
A/N: Hey guys!! Long time no see…So sorry for the very long very crazy disappearance… *Ahem* Without further ado!! Rookie Hour chapter seven!
—————————————————————————
Hi, hello, and welcome back to the Surviving with Kyaire and Leon show! I’m your host, Kyaire Birkin! Let’s update y’all on where we are now! After a grueling time of solving yet another puzzle involving electricity, we finally got the second electrical part to open Ben’s cell. Poor Ben, what if he had a family? Friends? A lover? Oh god, what if I die without ever having a boyfriend? Oh god, oh god, oh god…Then suddenly, a voice draws me out of my thoughts as I figure out how to rearrange the electrical panels to power so the cell containing our deceased friend opens.
“Kyaire…? Hello? Kyaire?!” Leon shouts lowly, grabbing my shoulders and spinning me around to face him; I snap back to reality again. I’ve been spacing out a lot. This is irritating me. I look up at Leon and raise a brow. “Yeah?” I answer.
“Do you need help rearranging the electrical panels, or do you have it?” He asks with a cheeky smile, and I roll my eyes playfully in response. “I’ve got it, rookie.” I turn back around, focusing on the panels, while Leon looks for any possible threats until I get a ding, and the greyed-out light hums yellow again. “Smart one, Matilda!” I exclaim happily giving myself a pat on the back. Leon responds in turn, “You got it? Let’s just hope that giant freak doesn’t appear again like he did last time.” The cell door slides open, and I slink in, grabbing the parking pass from around his neck. Seeing a tape recorder in his jacket, I click the play button, hearing a conversation between Ben and Annette talking about her work within the orphanage and Umbrella; Ben then brings up the G-virus…? What the fuck is that? I thought that was something Annette and Dad were working on solving problems at work…not creating. I gasp softly, and the recording is quickly cut short after Ben calls her a bitch…Which is rightly deserved, to be frank. I groan, standing up and turning to Leon; I open my mouth and then hear a swift clink of doors opening and a gaggle of zombies groan.
“Leon…? What’s that?!” I shout over my shoulder, finally taking in Ben’s poor form.
“A shit show! Let’s go!” Leon shouts back at me, firing his gun to take down a couple of zombies. “And our giant friend is back, so let’s go!” I quickly scramble to my feet and grab my gun, shooting down as many as I can with him. Hearing a quick curse from Leon, I realize this may be it for us that I need to tell him how I feel because I don’t wanna die in this stupid situation without telling him. But maybe we’ll make it? Perhaps we can make it out; I need to focus so I can go to dumb college and get out of this dumb city. As I’m zeroing in on my focus, Leon pulls out a grenade tossing it into the group, stunning that giant fuck and killing more than half of his little lackeys. He grabs my hand, running us past the zombies, and I bend over, narrowly missing that giant’s fist as he comes to; we continue to run.
“Leon! I gotta tell you something!” I shout as we run down the hall.
“Really?! Right now?!” He yells back over his shoulder as he shoots a zombie in the face, letting go of my hand as we continue to run; I mourn the warmth of his hand but shake my head, focusing on the current objective. I shoot at a zombie in front of us as I take a breath and finally commit to telling him.
“I think my parents are the cause of this virus!” I shout, and he stops running, pausing to look at me.
“What?” He yells, and his jaw drops, looking at me quite shocked. Which ladies and gentlemen, I’m not surprised at how else would you react when you find out someone you’ve been surviving with parents were in fact, not victims of this massive tragedy but! Were the creators? How would y’all react? Any takers? Oh wait you guys can’t respond…Anyway. I look at him stopping for a second, before I hear the big guy's big foot steps again, I grab his wrist tugging him.
“Yell, ask questions, and scream at me later we gotta go!” I yell snapping him out of his daze as I pull him toward the parking garage, giving a silent prayer to whichever God is listening to save us from this bullshit. As soon as we come in and round the corner. Mr. FeeFiFoFum decides to fucking BURST through the wall and grabs us both by the throat. I’ll be frank with you guys, I’m starting to wish my suicide attempts actually went through because I rather not deal with this. While I’m thinking this as he chokes us out, which you know I’m into but not this way guys. I hear a SWAT truck rev to life and I turn my head as my mystery hero hits the giant with the car into the wall leaving him twitching and then he goes still me and Leon catch our breath, coughing for dear air, sweet beautiful needed air. Ada steps out of the vehicle, I roll my eyes despite my lack of oxygen to my brain, I can still be my sassy assholeish self.
“Ada!?” Leon exclaims looking up at her astonished and enamored…? Bitch seriously? Leon, I’m right here!! Also, I’m not lying about my identity like Miss “FBI agent” over here. Ugh! Wait, why am I thinking like this? I don’t like Leon; I need to focus! Ada and I make eye contact both squinting at each other as I scramble to my feet, crossing my arms as she scoffs, “This is getting old…” She walks past us, turning back slightly, while I help Leon to his feet; he mutters a small thanks.
Ada continues ahead of us while scolding us, “Saving your asses─that’s twice.” Holding up two fingers, I flick her off from behind her head while Leon gives me a look. I grimace slightly before putting down the finger. “I didn’t realize you were keeping score,” Leon responds snarkily, and I giggle slightly as we follow her.
She turns towards us, exasperated, “Look, this isn’t a game!” I hear the truck creak as the big fucker starts to lift the truck, and I groan, “You gotta be kidding me!”
“Nothing dies down here!” Ada complains.
“You’ve got that right,” Leon responds with a groan as he takes out his gun, and suddenly the truck explodes. Huh…Well, thank you, lady luck, for the favor, and then realized our lady luck was Ada…I groan softly, seeing her with the detonator in hand; after I protect my face from the blast, giving her a nod in thanks, Ada smiles back, and she addresses Leon, “I take it you have the keycard?”
“Nope,” I chide her with a smirk, “I do, and I also have this, but” I take out the tape recorder. Ada reaches out for it, but I yank it back just out of reach, “Not until you tell me what the hell is going on and what you know about my parents and this outbreak,” I start to hand it to her when she nods after a long while of debilitating over it. I snatched it back from her at the last minute, “You better explain what’s on it.” Ada snides at me then takes it from my hands.
“Maybe…After I hear it.” She responds with a smirk eyeing Leon softly, after my face falls, yeah this it. This is the moment I’ve decided to hate her, because what the hell. If I have a moment to shoot her in the knee without getting Leon to side against me with her, I will definitely do it because I’ll be damned if she plays me guys. I’m nudged out of my thoughts by Leon, “Ky…?” He whispers softly nodding his head toward Ada waiting at the shutter ahead of us with her arms crossed.
“Don’t be such a sore loser, Kyaire,” she mocks me softly. I roll my eyes, flicking her off while inserting the parking pass into the ticket machine, the shutter slowly coming up as all three of us walk out and under the shutter going into the street. I trail behind Leon and Ada as they walk ahead, I hear the pair talk about what’s on the tape recorder while I pull my hood up as I hear the patter of the rain.
“Kyaire, you with us?” Leon calls to me, looking back at me as I zone back into the world. I look up at him and nod, as I take in his features I notice more of the brown hair he tried to hide while trying to bleach his hair, the softness of the blue in his stare but there’s an unsureness about his look. Oh right he’s waiting for me to follow him, I pick up my pace as I realize Ada was waiting on me and rolled her eyes. I look up and see Kendo’s gun shop, “Kendo…?” I ask the two.
“Road’s out. We gotta cut through here, got a problem?” Ada asks, putting her hand on her hip, I push past her and take out my key into Kendo’s gun shop, unlocking the door and opening it. “What a mess…” Ada scoffs, walking past me. Leon hums and grabs a couple things around the gun shop adding a shotgun attachment to his shotgun. I grab some ammo and get stopped in my tracks hearing a shout, “Don’t move!”
I silently trail up with my gun ready ahead of me, I see Kendo with his shotgun near Leon’s head. “Kendo, don’t!” I shout coming out of the shadows stepping between Leon and Kendo, putting my hand on his shotgun slowly lowering it. “What’re you doing here? Where’s Emma and Christina?” I ask him, Kendo slowly registers that it's me with a sad look falling over his face at the mention of his daughter and wife.
“Christina…Christina’s…gone.” He chokes out, and Leon places his hand on my shoulder. I look back at him. “You know this guy?” Leon asks.
“I babysit his daughter,” I respond to him and I suddenly focus back into my conversation with Kendo, I swallow softly and look at him as he looks to the back of the shop asking him, “Where’s Emma, Kendo?” The door to the back opens and I hear Emma’s small voice croak out, “Daddy…?” I gasp softly as I see her sickly frame and her softly tan skin greying and one of her eyes slightly glazed over as the monsters we’ve seen before.
“I think your daughters need help, sir.” Leon says as he takes her in as well, Ada comes out pointing her gun at Emma and I immediately point my gun at her at the same time as Kendo, Ada unwavers in pointing her gun .
“Ada, so help me God, put that fucking gun down!” I yell at her, Kendo steps behind me between Emma and Ada’s trained gun, Ada cocks her head to the side, “Step aside. We need to terminate her before she turns.” Her voice stern and unwavering before I can respond Kendo yells back, “‘Terminate’? That’s my fucking daughter!” Leon looks between Ada, Kendo and I bewildered unsure what to do before deciding to be the voice of reason.
“Ada…Just let them be.” He tries to reason with her, Ada slowly lowers her gun but I keep mine trained on her. “Ky…Look at me,” I glance at him and back at Ada, because I am truly sick of her bullshit. I can get lying but shooting an innocent kid?! Leon comes between my gun and Ada reasonably so, because well I am contemplating shooting her and honestly? I should, but as I look into Leon’s eyes as he puts his hand on my pistol slowly lowering it as I do follow his actions as well. I take a deep breath and let it out, realizing she is our key out and my key to finding out what's going on further no matter how much she wants to let on for me.
I walk past Leon and lean against the door holstering my gun, Kendo keeps his shotgun trained on Ada as he addresses Emma and my heart breaks for them knowing the little girl I saw grow may be mercy killed and reasonably so. “Emma, sweetheart, I told you to stay put…” He addresses her sweetly, he turns to her checking on Emma and kneels next to her petting her hair and holding her close to his chest. “Daddy…?” Emma murmurs softly, “Yeah, Emmie. Daddy’s here. I’m here, okay?” He cradles her back crying into her shoulder a bit, murmuring under her breath Kendo turns his attention to Leon and shouts, “You’re a cop. You’re supposed to know something—how did this happen!? HUH!?” Leon looks at Ada and Ada keeps her eyes trained on Emma obviously in case of her turning but I hope she knows as soon as she tries it, I’m trying it quicker…I hope. I snap back into reality as Emma whispers softly, “Mommy…?”
Kendo turns back to her holding her by the arms as she stares at us, maybe a part of me is hoping she’ll recognize me but I don’t know if I can take anymore heartbreak from this scene. I look away, feeling tears roll down my eyes and wiping my eyes as quickly as I can trying to keep a brave face. Leon gently grabs my hand from my face and squeezes it gently, my heart skips a beat but this truly isn’t the time for any of this. “Mommy’s sleeping honey, okay? And I’m gonna put you to bed too, okay?” Kendo tells her gently as he picks her up and starts to take her to the back, addressing us one more time, “Just go…Just give us some privacy.” He chokes out between tears, closing the door behind them and as soon as they’re gone I look at Ada with a look that could kill and she feels it as she looks at me.
“You know, it’s one thing to keep the truth from me! But why him…?” Leon asks and all three of us look at the backdoor as soon as we hear a gunshot, I start to silently pray there isn’t a second one. Leon continues from before, “I want to find out what’s happening here—” I interject and place a hand on his shoulder after quickly gathering myself. “Can we just take a moment, Leon? To breathe or just…something.” I breathe to him, completely overwhelmed with everything happening within the last couple of hours and Leon looks completely betrayed. “I don’t for someone who grew up here and knew them…I thought you’d be more immediate on this especially you knowing them,” he points toward the door, I open my mouth to reply and he continues, “but, I guess I don’t know you as well as I thought I did.” Just when I thought I knew pain, this is completely different from what I’ve known. It’s a different type of heartbreak than from before, than from what went on with Kendo and Emmie.
Ada steps in, “You two can argue later, I’ll tell you two my mission. It’s to take down Umbrella's entire operation. We may not make it out. But, I need you to have two clear thoughts to do this as a team especially if things go awry.” Leon steps toward Ada placing a hand on her shoulder, “Whatever it takes to save this city…count me in.” He states giving her a kind smile, glancing at me slightly and I let out a low sigh looking away from them crossing my arms.
I don’t know where we stand at this point.
