my next door neighbor growing up was a stay-at-home-mom who left her husband and three kids for a man she met on Runescape. He also left his wife and son for my neighbor.
A while back, while working on Dead Reckoning and Final Reckoning, Christopher McQuarrie was asked about his once dream project - an Alexander the Great biopic, a script he wrote which infamously never got picked up by any studio back in the 2000's as they didn't know what to do with an action epic movie that was also gay.
And this was what he said:
The context of this twitter exchange was McQuarrie posting an article about the "Legion of Lovers", which would have been featured in his Alexander project.
I have to say, when I was watching The Final Reckoning, the submarine USS Ohio and its crew (aka the Gay Submarine) did make me think of that tweet. The context is different, but I still felt like it was evoking something.
And then my friend @sexypneumothorax decided to look up other aspects of the Alexander story. Particularly Hephaestion - military officer, engineer and diplomat, Alexander's closest friend, right-hand man, and, as many (including, evidently, McQuarrie himself) believe, - Alexander's lover. And some of the things on his Wikipedia page just... evoke scenes or events from The Final Reckoning and feel like a source of inspiration for it.
Alexander and Haphaestion were extremely close, with Hephaestion always following and supporting Alexander even in his riskiest and most controversial decisions.
There is an anecdote about how after a battle, the two, dressed in similar-looking clothes, went to meet the Persian royal family, who had been captured and held as prisoners, and the queen mistook Hephasetion for Alexander because he was taller. The Final Reckoning does not have any confusions like that, but it does feature a scene where the two main characters go to see a certain prisoner, dressed in (identical) prison guards' uniform, and their height difference is emphasized.
Then here is also this detail:
"Time after time, when Alexander needed to divide his forces he entrusted half to Hephaestion, knowing that in him he had a man of unquestionable loyalty who understood and sympathized with his aims and, above all, who got the job done."
Remind you of anything/anyone?
To the point where...
"After the siege of Tyre (332 BC) Alexander entrusted his fleet to Hephaestion, who had orders to skirt the coast and head for Gаzа, their next objective, while Alexander himself led the army overland. Hephaestion's task was not an easy one, for this was not the Athenian fleet with which Alexander had started and had earlier disbanded, but a motley collection of semi-reluctant allies of many nationalities who would need holding together with patience and strength."
Even the ending of the movie now feels like some sort of a fix-it for how Hephaestion actually died: "Alexander had to be summoned from the games to Hephaestion, who was seriously ill. He did not arrive in time; by the time he got there, Hephaestion was dead."
(Albeit this can be applied to several characters, without the "fix-it" aspect).
Obviously I might be reading too deep into this. But am I?...
