the commissioner of the nhl saying that the nhl needs to do work before season 2 of heated rivalry comes out and saying he/the nhl wouldn’t react the way the commissioner does in the books is actually so funny to me because not only does no one believe that, just the idea of the nhl realizing they need to do last minute pr because of heated rivalry s2. before when s1 blew up they were able to reap the benefits of the goodwill of the show and have people be like “hmm hockey sure is interesting” and the nhl gave flat, surface level supportive statements of the show/gay people. now they have to deal with the years of issues of homophobia in the nhl coming back to bite them in the ass this next season and really have to pretend like they care about gay people my chesthdkdjcnf hockey is the most spotlighted this year that its ever been and everyone is seeing the dark underbelly immediately. they spent years capitulating to homophobes so they wouldn’t alienate part of their audience (and homophobic players) by banning themed jerseys, and now they are going to scramble to pretend that they support the gays.

One time I told my gastroenterologist that I thought the new immunosuppressant I was prescribed for my ulcerative colitis was causing my hair to fall out. I had not been warned that hair thinning was a potential side effect of the medication so I was startled and when I began shedding like a husky, not because I’m vain but because it is alarming when you suddenly begin losing significant amounts of hair with no cause you’re aware of. It took some googling to find out it was a somewhat common side effect of my new medication.

I casually informed my gastro about this phenomenon near the end of our next appointment because I hadn’t been informed that was something that could happen and I thought it might be important to note, possibly a sign of a deeper problem with the way my body was reacting to the medication or sometime like that. Instead of responding with ‘That happens sometimes.’ or even ‘Huh. Weird. Didn’t know it could do that.’ he turned around and looked at me and said in the most condescending and judgmental voice imaginable “Your colon is more important than your hair.”

Which is a really funny one liner out of context and if he had said it with any other expression and tone, I might have laughed. But he was so fucking serious. I was taken aback and immediately tried to explain I just thought it might be of medical relevance. Like, yes, I fucking know my colon is more important than my hair and it seemed like this man was prematurely annoyed with me and (I assume) he thought I was going to try to switch treatments for my severe ulcerative colitis because my fucking hair was falling out. Far from the cruelest thing a medical professional has ever said to me, not egregious enough to make me feel the need to comment on it or try to switch providers, just demoralizing in a way that felt like a branding. I left the appointment feeling so fucking small. I thought, oh, he thinks I’m stupid and vain. This doctor, who has seen me at my most vulnerable and heard me have to describe shitting blood so much I needed iron infusions for the anemia, this man who has shoved a camera up my ass on multiple occasions thinks I am a vapid dumbass who would value my hair over not being in fucking pain and incontinent and sick and bleeding.

Anyway, being chronically ill and always dependent on the healthcare system and medical professionals is death by a thousand paper cuts mentally. No dignity, attempting to perform being polite and genteel and not hysterical or emotional or troublesome while also being in severe pain, just so you will be taken seriously. And you can do your absolute best and still be put in the ‘stupid and annoying’ box while fighting a serious illness.

It would be kind of fun to have a medical dramamedy show where people (patients and people in the medical field) could submit their craziest experiences with the medical system and those plotlines and patient stories could be dramatized and woven into a cohesive narrative with any additional profits from the show going to pay off medical debt.

Plotline A: Patient is suffering from a near fatal case of hypothermia after passing out in the snow drunk and laying there all night until his 13 year old nephew discovered him in the morning, said 13 year old managed to transport his druncle to the hospital on a snowmobile but the rest of the family cannot make it there due to road conditions.

Plotline B: A live rat fell through the ceiling halfway through an emergency appendectomy, causing the surgeon to startle and rupture the patient’s appendix. Infectious disease is very interested in the situation due to the risk of zoonotic infection. The hospital’s legal department is also very interested in the situation.

everyone is saying “and biological parents too” which I absolutely agree with but this post is about the sheer helplessly of being a child and having your parent bringing some random guy or lady into your house and having no say over it and your opinions are not taken seriously because you are just a child. so many children are harmed this way and they’re totally powerless to escape the situation or remove the adult from their life.

the thing about elite athletes is that you generally need to be an elite youth athlete to get there. and the thing about being an elite youth athlete is that there are a million of them and very few actually see returns on the insane investment of time and resources it takes to support an elite youth athlete. no one is owed a career in elite sports. frankly elite youth sports fries the minds of most children who come into contact with them, why wouldn’t a parent watching out for their child’s mental wellbeing seriously question if moving their child to boarding school half a world away for the remote chance of a lucrative career in a very expensive dangerous sport is the right move. (and why wouldn’t a mother still feel rage if that decision was taken away from her completely)(this post is about oscar piastri)

we hear stories of the sacrifices that athletes and their families made during their youth career and think oh, well it was all worth it. but we don’t think about the families who made the same sacrifices and it wasn’t worth it. the families drowning in debt for a child who was never going to make it and feels the entire weight of that burden. we don’t think about the people these athletes could have been were they normal people without the career, the money, the recognition. we don’t value the fulfillment of normal, average lives as highly as that of high-profile lives. when in fact the satisfaction i get sharing saltines and peanut butter with my roommate on a saturday afternoon as we watch bad reality TV is a satisfaction more psychologically healthy than what an athlete feels upon winning the championship he’s dreamed of his whole life

But then they looked at big, tall, broad shouldered, muscular action man Karl Urban and went. I follow some non-consumer and pro-recycling facebook pages and like. I'm not sure how to explain this exactly, but some of them have a frankly unhealthy relationship with preservation and recycling. People will photograph an ancient threadbare shirt that's full of massive holes and 30% mould by volume and say "this was in my mum's basement and she wanted to throw it out! How do I save it?" People will show a stack of thirty empty margarine containers and say "what use can I find for these? I don't want to throw them out." Someone detailed their strategies for making sure that they only walk around their house barefoot or with slippers, never walking int heir socks, in order to make sure the socks wear out as slowly as possible.

Responsible reuse and care of your belongings is one thing, but for some of these groups, if they monitored food and exercise the way they monitored general consumption it would be an eating disorder.

unfortunately I get the impression that a lot of people do not understand that and therefore build theories around the idea that if the gun is not Specifically taken down from the wall and fired, it serves no purpose to the story, so why the hell was it there in the first place

and this isn't even getting into harm that's genuinely necessary! i read a book recently that was intended to educate people in healthcare about medical trauma, written by a medical professional who found that there weren't existing resources to help her cope with the aftermath of the extremely traumatic c section that saved her life. the whole tone of the book was "i know you've never thought about this before, but walk with me through this case study" and it's aimed at other medical professionals! it's aimed at the people who are doing this harm, and so many of them think that people aren't allowed to find it harmful just because it's necessary!

ETA: the title of the book is managing the psychological impact of medical trauma: a guide for mental health and health care professionals. it's aimed at medical professionals so it's a little weird to read as a layperson but you can only be so picky in a situation where so little literature exists. elsewhere in the notes someone mentions the very recent book consented by zed zha, md, which i just read and i think is a better choice if you're just dipping your toe into this subject. these are the only two books i am aware of.
