adult etta kneeling down to her younger self to take the knives out of her hands. never let them think there is anything you can't do. older wintrow looking at his younger self as if in a mirror. despite everything, it's still you. adult kennit unable to meet the eye of his little self, so small, so beaten. did we get everything we ever dreamed of? we once got very close.

I don't think I ever understood Beloved's driven purposefulness in shifting the wheel of time as well as I do now after meeting Kennit Ludluck. Of course, as Beloved explains to Fitz, events repeat and evil prevails when the wheel of time is not shifted. We see instances of the cycle repeating in Fitz's very own life, e.g. his loneliness as a child and then Dutiful's. But when Etta told Kennit that she's pregnant, although Kennit's first thoughts were of his happy memories with his parents, he then immediately brushed those aside and thought "i will have to hurt my son. Because i have become Igrot he must become Kennit and i will have to hurt him." He doesn't want to. But he feels like it's his destiny, because he's trapped in a cycle and the wheel of time has not yet shifted. There will be no escape for him or his son. And that's why the wheel of time must be shifted from his course, to allow for a better future, a new future, and not just a recycled past.

I love a character who is always having a bad time. You pick up the book and go hey, bud, how you doin in there, and the answer is bad. Really puts your life in perspective.
