my professor’s take is that mary shelley is feminizing victor throughout the novel, as a way of flipping gender roles and putting a male character through female experiences.

evidence as explained:

victor is creating life. he is putting his health at risk (spends two years with little sleep or socialization) to bring life forth into this world

his illness after he is shocked by the creature coming to life is akin to both ‘hysteria’ and postpartum depression

he pretty much swoons, let’s be honest

henry clerval, a man who has been characterized as manly and heroic, has to chase after damsel-in-distress victor and care for him as he convalesces 

afterward, he hides what he did and went through, for fear that others will label him crazy and emotional and not believe him. sound familiar?

Victor in general is more emotional than the other characters and is constantly tempering his reactions to not be seen as irrational 

the book does not otherwise have central female characters 

Also, Shelley’s mother died in childbirth. It’s interesting, then, that Shelley presents the creation of life as something horrific and damaging. She parallels Victor with her mother.

I'm a trans guy and Derek, I can tell you my wardrobe has improved a huge amount simply by reading your threads. The "dress for your body type" stuff never worked well for me; your threads about putting together an intentional look and for getting a good fit - that's 99% of the game.

I remember encountering exactly this sentiment when reading up about women's haircuts/hairstyles. The essay started off with "There are many different face shapes, and that means that the same hairstyle will look different on different people," and went on to list and show examples of each different facial shape. I thought, oh cool! human variety is amazing and aesthetics are so complex! And then the essay went from that right into "of course there is only one GOOD facial shape, The Beauteous Oval, and the whole point of hairstyling is to try to disguise all the other awful ugly deviant facial shapes and make everyone look exactly the same <3"

I'm a huge proponent of dressing in things you enjoy and ignoring any rules.

Growing up, I was deeply unfashionable. I was bullied for this at school. In my 20s, I was bullied at work for my clothes by a coworker. In my 30s, when I worked in marketing, and was surrounded by probably the most stylish cohort of colleagues I ever had, and I was frequently complimented on my sense of style. It was really weird. When I wore something unusual they thought it was a 'statement' and 'on trend' instead of being 'weird' and 'unfashionable'.

What changed?

I could afford to buy new clothes that I wanted to wear. That's it. That's the main difference.

Style isn't doing whatever they tell you to in the magazines (I have never done that); it's wearing what you enjoy wearing and being able to afford clean, well-made versions of it.

Like, yes, you *can* thrift the odd good outfit, but it's a lot harder, and you're almost always making compromises. The people I knew who wore stylish alternative stuff as a teen and young adult were all spending £££ I preferred to spend on not being in debt. I occasionally see Tumblr posts saying the opposite, but in my experience, for most people, it's just not true. The people who looked cooler than me at Wendyhouse were buying New Rocks on credit cards. Even on eBay, that shit isn't cheap.

This is not to say that poor people can't be stylish. Rather: fuck anyone who bullies you about your style. Because they're not really bullying you about your style; they're judging you about perceived economic status. Your style is you and it's glorious. The people worth knowing will see you and your style in what you *can* afford.

Being 'fashionable' is keeping up with the Joneses. Being stylish is being yourself.

You can try to disguise or alter your shape if you want - if it's about achieving something that makes *you* comfortable. But it won't make you more or less like a man or a woman or neither or whatever gender situation you are trying to express. From an agender perspective it's very hard for me to understand how people see one piece of cloth as 'feminine' and another as 'masculine'. Or body shapes, for that matter. That, too, is a part of you, not your clothes. Because someone of a different gender or none could wear your clothes and it would not change a thing about who they are.

Clothes can't make you a man, but they also can't take that away from you. Be the most YOU you can be, and the rest will shine through.

Got into a discussion about emergency response at a professional retreat recently and everyone was going on and on about agility, and I was like, "Okay but what about contingency?"

And they were like "What?"

And I was like, "Agility isn't the ultimate form of preparedness. Contingency is. Agility still requires you to flounder and figure out a solution in the moment, but if you have a contingency plan, all you have to do is implement it."

And they were like "But you can't make contingency plans for every situation!"

And I was like, "Yeah, you basically can if you just identify all of your basic dependencies and contingency plan around the loss of any dependency," and then I gave a few examples.

And they all stared at me like I'm an alien.

Anyway, that's how I figured out I'm Batman-coded and also learned how Batman must feel talking to supposedly professional superheroes who never bothered to run disaster scenarios until I pointed out that it's insane that they don't already have a plan for if Superman turns evil.
