conservative politics are built on the idea that people have to âearnâ the right not to suffer

Mars!
Mars just did its opposition thing. And this poem was supposed to be sort of published elsewhere, but there was some miscommunication. But anyway, if youâve ever thought, âthere is no way the concepts of the uncanny valley and living on Mars could be combined,â well, you thought wrong.Â
Mar's Uncanny Valles
The uncanny valley: originally a robotics concept stating that as a figure or object becomes more familiar and humanlike our affinity for it increases, until it is too close and we switch to discomfort.
When we aim our telescopes at Mars
sometimes we hear,
"Oh, it's just that little dot?"
Yes. This shining pinpoint
dirty brown between smudgy grey ice caps
is supposed to be the god of war,
be familiar and habitable
and start a war between worlds -
our first possible extraterrestrial residence.
Didn't you see your new neighborhood?
Down low in the valles and basins
up high in the volcanic extremes?
Can you not picture
your new house among oxidized red:
Where we will be almost-home on almost-Earth,
but you'll be one third of your heavy self
(until you pull the protective gear off)
and half as old as you were
(until we rethink it all).
You'll certainly feel the chill
(don't go out at night)
as you try to pretend it's just winter
and these new habits are familiar. Earthly.
What you do not see
is that Mars holds all the times we will fail
we will lose, and break
because we dared to reach past Earth.
But there is also the one time we might succeed
Out of desperation
resistance
and marvel
living uncanny lives.
Being 18-25 is like playing a video game where youâve skipped the tutorial and youâre just sort of running about with no idea how anything works
Being 25-30 is like later on in the game when youâve figured out how things work, but have made poor leveling decisions along the way and are now horribly underpowered for what youâre supposed to be doing.
maybe itâsâŠ. subtle.
I honestly always find the term âspinsterâ as referring to an elderly, never-married woman as funny because you know what?
Wool was a huge industry in Europe in the middle ages. It was hugely in demand, particularly broadcloth, and was a valuable trade good. A great deal of wool was owned by monasteries and landed gentry who owned the land.Â
And, well, the only way to spin wool into yarn to make broadcloth was by hand.Â
This was viewed as a feminine occupation, and below the dignity of the monks and male gentry that largely ran the trade.Â
So what did they do?
They hired women to spin it. And, turns out, this was a stable job that paid very well. Well enough that it was one of the few viable economic options considered ârespectableâ outside of marriage for a woman. A spinster could earn quite a tidy salary for her art, and maintain full control over her own money, no husband required.Â
So, naturally, women who had little interest in marriage or men? Grabbed this opportunity with both hands and ran with it. Of course, most people didnât get this, because All Women Want Is Husbands, Right?
So when people say âspinsterâ as in âspinster auntâ, they are TRYING to conjure up an image of a little old lady who is lonely and bitter.Â
But what I HEAR are the smiles and laughter of a million women as they earned their own money in their own homes and controlled their own fortunes and lived life on their own terms, and damn what society expected of them.Â
I hope this a shit post cause thatâs not even close to being true.

I would be very interested to see your sources.Â

military worship in this country is out of fucking control
excuse me?
military worship in this country is out of fucking controlÂ
Yea youâre right, we shouldnât honor the people willing to risk their life to save ours and defend our country ⊠oh
Military worship in this country is out of fucking control
Iâm in the military and yes itâs out of fucking control. Most of the people I know in the military feel the same way. You civilians need to calm the fuck down. Most of us joined in our teens or early twenties. For a lot of us it was because we needed a job, and we didnât see any other options, and this job has good benefits, especially for an uneducated young person in America. We get healthcare and education!! Thatâs some tempting fucking fruit. But this is a JOB. Some people in the military become heroes, thatâs true. Jumping on grenades, defusing bombs, dragging a wounded person from the middle of a firefight. They usually end up dead in the process. Those people deserve respect, in my opinion. They give their lives for their friends, no matter whether or not you agree with the policies that put them there in the first place. But a lot of people in America reflexively claim that everyone in the military is a hero, full stop. This isnât true and it lets people look the other way when something is actually wrong in the military, because itâs the military, theyâre heroes, they can do no wrong.
Weâre doing a job, and a lot of us are never really put in harmâs way. I work in a climate controlled lab for 8 hours a day, for instance. Really grueling. Such a hero. This fawning lip service of an infallible military doesnât do us any good. I know people who have bought into it, who have heard so many people tell them that theyâre heroes that they actually believe it, and they are the stupid and dangerous ones. Joining the military does not make you a hero, and calling us heroes might make you feel all warm and fluffy and red white and blue but it doesnât do anything for the people that end up on the streets with PTSD or come home with life-changing injuries or in a box. Weâre human beings, not some concept that you can just mindlessly adulate and then feel better about yourself.

oh boy just in time for the 4th of July
Speaking as a disabled veteran: itâd be one thing if the fucking hero worship MEANT ANYTHING. But itâs a bunch of empty loud words about how Brave and Noble everyone in the military is (nah some of us are assholes) and then when it comes to, oh I donât know, paying a soldier enough to feed their family without food stamps, or giving disability compensation without a NIGHTMARE fight with the country that claims to âcareâ so much. Plus the whole âsending us off to kill other people to make rich men richer while innocents die for itâ thing. Itâs not âdefending freedomâ to shove our troops into everyoneâs business in countries that happen to have oil and such Military worship isnât only annoying, itâs a hollow lie thatâs basically dangerous to everyone
worth watching for the end
yo what tHE FUCK ÂĄ
Interesting fact these two are playing but they are using play behaviors of their own species so they dont really âmatch upâ!
Dog - is âbowingâ and using open mouth âbitesâ as forms of play
âPlay fight with me!â
Cat - is giving the little paw bats they use when playing with kittens
âCute kittens get booped!â
They are both trying to engage the other in a playful way but not understanding the others responce.
The dog is like âyou smack so no play? but not hard smack and no bad noise so not angry?â
The cat is like âwhy you jump around? open mouth but no chomp? no hiss so is okay?â
And then they sort of settle with a kind of communal grooming gesture they both understand!
Dog: no play? okay i lay⊠we calm now friend!
Cat: sad? no play? is ok i luv u weird kitten!
Honor these 25 black women who died in police custody.

Legitimate *pro bono legal services* donât exist without a good reason. In a few of the exmormon groups Iâm in youâll see regular posts saying stuff like âLook what my lawyer sent me today!â with a pic of their resignation confirmation letter from the church.
You know. Just stuff that a normal average church that is definitely not actually a cult would do. ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
đ
As an ex-mormon, Iâm gonna look the fuck into this. I want nothing to do with the church that shaped so much toxicity about my self image and my sexual orientation.
Not sure if any followers need this but if you do, here you go.
Everyone should be able to choose their religious beliefs and community, and leave any that they find does not work for them.
Ex mormon here - this guyâs legit. The Mormon holds your files for eternity, and when they find out that youâve moved to a new area, they will send members and missionaries from that region to harass you. I know this sounds like dystopic bullshit, but they followed my father through three moves before he rejoined the church.
Also ex mormon here who used this. Itâs a ridiculously helpful service that is incredibly easy to use. They keep you updated throughout the whole process, and itâs totally worth it since the church doesnât get to keep all your private information and pass it around once you resign :)
A tiny journal-ish gif-comic from a few tweets I made last night!  I believed this kind of stuff until I was 14 or so, which is pretty old in retrospectâŠ
There used to be more but I accidentally saved over it :/
I did manage to recover one other page, though!
