Me at least twice a week
the father (dolly parton), the son (sabrina carpenter), and the holy spirit (miss piggy)
Just gonna go ahead and put this here since I have a feeling some folks are gonna need the reminder
"Punishment works!!!" We're drowning in three to four generations of people so pants-shittingly terrified of ever being wrong that half of everyone has constructed a worldview wherein they never even consider the possibility that they could be wrong and the other half behaves like one wrong move will make anything or anyone explode violently into a million irreperable pieces. I don't think it works guys
one of the funnier parts of having online friends is when they casually reference something that seems weird as hell from your perspective and you have to go "okay so is this like a reigional/cultural difference or is your specific life experience just insane"
i love when bigots accidentally paint a picture of a beautiful new world. "the woke left want the government to be run by lesbians" "i went to pride and its 90% trans propaganda now" "theyre teaching your chldren to be communist in school" omg do you promise 🥺
The idea that rural communities wouldn't benefit from public transit of some form is so fucking stupid. There was a guy in my hometown who would hitch hike 15 miles to the grocery store because he was blind that everyone knew and knew to offer rides to if they saw him. You know what else would have fixed this, been more efficient, and helped other disabled people, seniors, and people whose cars got repoed?
A fucking bus.
I feel like tumblrites have been a bit down lately, we really could use another British Royal Family Death to boost morale.
At least I'll always have my fictional women
thinking again about vampirism as disability
what if you slept all day and woke at night, lonely and frustrated. what if you couldn't go to social events, or even mundane public spaces like stores. what if you couldn't see the sun. what if you couldn't go to the pool, or the beach, or the creek. what if you couldn't eat what everyone else is eating. what if you couldn't eat at all. what if your basic needs came at the cost of your loved ones' quality of life. what if you became agitated, confused, maybe even violent if your needs weren't met. what if people blamed your behavior on demons, or worse, your own inherent evil. what if people saw you as a threat to your own community. what if the default response to your suffering was either indifference or violence. what if people thought you were better off dead, that you no longer count as human, that they're doing you a favor by letting you disappear. what if people assumed you must somehow deserve all of this. what about that.
It's funny, because I muse about the overlap of disability with mythos about monsters constantly. Vampires in particular hit close to home for me. So much of whats described overlaps with the baseline symptoms & comorbities seen with many types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
A strange effect of EDS is how you constantly straddle the line between aged and ageless. You don't get wrinkles like your peers do – but noticeably older-looking hands is a hallmark for some types. Your skin is soft and supple in your elder years – but visible veins and transluscent skin is part of the EDS diagnostic criteria.
What happens internally doesn't feel any less bizarre. Many of us contort and move in ways humans should not be able to, especially before diagnosis. Each type presents its own risk of major health events, from joint dislocation to chiari malformation to arterial rupture.
The comorbities associated with Ehlers-Danlos have just as much of an impact on how we connect with and move through the world. POTS and hyperPOTS are common enough to be presumed, presenting with a myriad of physical symptoms and requiring high levels of salt and liquid. ADHD and autism are both frequently seen, and themselves have a strong correlation to delayed sleep phase disorder – a neurological condition resulting in varying degrees of inflexible nocturnalism. Delayed or rapid gastric emptying can see many EDS individuals struggling to feed in typical ways. MCAS is also common, and can mean any number of strange, sometimes shifting allergies (like garlic, or sunlight, or certain metals...) with possibly deadly reactivity.
Many of these things apply to me. As a result, I feel a lot of kinship with vampires. Sometimes I joke about being one. And this post perfectly encapsulates why the sentiment I'm expressing is recognition of my own disabled experiences in fiction.
I highly recommend that anyone interested in this angle read the book Monstrosity: the Human Monster in Visual Culture by Alexa Wright. It’s available as EPUB
