I fucking love the nicknames we’ve come up for the Brothers in the Coltland(+Gentry) au.
My favorites have to be Riley for Ryland. Cory for Courtland and my absolute favorite which I’ve only seen once Coco for Colt.
Honorable mentions for Ry and Col. And the strict use of Court instead of Courtlands full name. Like yeah that guys name is Court no one not even the actual guy thinks of himself as Courtland that’s a Court.
*Slapping the top of the fanfic*
You can fit so many nicknames in this bad boy.
The parking attendant paused by the double-length bay. Intended for mobile homes and cars with trailers, it was currently occupied by a sleeping dragon.
No parts of it extended beyond the lines, and the paper ticket was clearly displayed, impaled on a horn.
The parking attendant moved on.
I'm probably not going to do anything with this story prompt but it's too good to lose.
Moments that reveal your Character's Loneliness!!
✧ Keeping a running list in their head of things to tell someone, even though there's no one to tell.
✧ Talking to the cat. Not in a playful way. In a confessional way.
✧ Lingering at the checkout counter a beat too long because the cashier made eye contact.
✧ Watching the clock on Friday evenings and feeling something they can't quite name drop in their chest.
✧ Answering "what did you do this weekend?" with something tidied up and social-sounding, leaving out the two days they saw no one.
✧ Muting their TV just to hear how loud the silence actually is.
✧ Ordering too much food and eating alone with the plates set out, taking up the whole table.
✧ Spending longer than necessary in public places (bookshops, grocery stores) because being around strangers is close enough.
✧ Re-reading old messages from people who don't talk to them anymore, not out of longing but out of proof they existed to someone.
✧ Getting very invested in strangers' lives online: their updates, their kids, their ordinary days.
✧ Starting conversations with service workers and then feeling ashamed of how much they wanted it to continue.
✧ Making plans they know won't happen just for the brief warmth of having something to look forward to.
✧ Dreaming about people they barely know.
✧ Waking grateful, then embarrassed.
✧ Keeping their coat on too long at parties, as though they're still deciding whether to stay.
Writing advice shouldn't hit this close to home! No fair!
Advice on Endings
I hate ending my stories. I will drag a story on long after it should have ended even though I know it should be done with. If anyone else struggles as well, here is a list of the different types of endings that are common.
Full Circle – Mirror the beginning of the story, show how the tone has shifted from start to end
Bittersweet – Character wins at the cost of something else, creates emotional depth
Emotional resolution – Focuses more on the growth of the characters than the events of the story
Twist – reveal something that changes the readers perspective or understanding
Open – doesn’t answer all the questions or solve all the conflicts of the story, leaving room for interpretation
Quiet – Subtle, reflective ending rather than a dramatic event
Sacrifice – The character has to give something up to achieve a greater goal
Hopeful – Despite the events of the story, there is a distinct sense that everything will be okay
Consequence – Shows how the characters choices throughout the story impact the world or their relationship
Character choice – centers on a decision that defines who the character has become through the story
Mostly I'm reblogging this so I don't lose it (completely) but it's darn useful advice
Show, Not Tell
To me this is the pinnacle of "Show, Not Tell" in story writing. The ship spinning, the broken screen, the line of blood, unconscious Grace. Everything that's going wrong is in one place and layered to show that there's a hella lot going wrong. Such talent putting this movie together.
every time I see someone act rude, entitled or disrespectful towards a fanfic writer and/or the fics, I think the writer should be legally allowed to kill them
Kill them forever by putting them in your story and evicerating them there.
I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."
I don't care how long it takes me to get to the point, it took that freaking long and I'm not going to change it. The words want to be there for a reason!
"The idea made me horny" is a good enough reason to write anything.
When the idea makes your bathing suit parts pay attention, you're onto something
Some idiot: "Why are you reading your own fic, that's shallow and stupid"
All fanfic writers and writers everywhere: "Who the fuck do you think I wrote it for?!"
Us: No one else was gonna write it!
"Idiots," I say, referring to the characters I have spent hundreds of my real life hours contemplating.
Really? You did that? And you made me type it with my own fingers?
scientists are trying to discover something harder than getting out of bed to go to work in the morning. and dont make a fucking penis joke ok they already checked everyone’s dick and it doesn’t even come close

writing the second half of a fic: I am in a fight with god himself and he is winning
Me, 2:00am: What's the plot of this thing?
I don't have much interest in seeing The Odyssey but my friend does. This means I'm seeing it:
Opening weekend
On 70mm film real IMAX
If I'm going to see it I'll go see it in a format that's available in 15 theaters worldwide
