I'm tired of fish being used as decorations

I don’t care how rustic it makes your kitchen look. Betta fish don’t belong in mason jars.

I don’t care how elegant it makes your coffee table look. Goldfish don’t belong in vases.

I don’t care how relaxed it makes your living room look. Koi fish don’t belong in small tanks.

I don’t care how cute it makes your kids room look. Guppies don’t belong in modified mini gumball machines.

Fish need space. Fish need filters. Fish need heaters. Fish need specific amounts of sunlight. Fish need you to open your fucking eyes and realize that they are living creatures. Not decorations.

The moment a fish is taken from nature and put into captivity to breed and sell, is the moment that you need to step up and take responsibility for giving those fish a comfortable life.

If you buy it, you should care for it. The RIGHT way.

Black LGBTQ center in Dallas damaged by arson attack

Investigators trying to determine if the arson against the black LGBT center was hate-motivated.

Last week in Dallas, Texas, an LGBTQ center that primarily serves Black gay and bi men and transgender women suffered fire damage in an intentional arson attack. 

Abounding Prosperity was broken into on Friday morning, and someone set a fire using an accelerant. A back office was destroyed and the rest of the center had smoke damage. 

The center, which operates out of a renovated home, provides counseling, medical, and STD prevention services to an estimated 2,000 people each year and seeks to address health, social, and economic disparities affecting queer black men. Its services are on hold while the staff deals with the fire damage.

One of its clients, Marcus Simpson, has been relying on Abounding Prosperity since he was a teenager. Whoever committed the arson is “a monster,” he told WFAA. “I mean, to see them do something like this in a small community that’s trying to help build the community, it’s sad.”  

Although authorities are unsure of the arsonist’s motives, Abounding Prosperity CEO Kirk Myers told the station he believes the perpetrator wanted to intimidate the people the center serves. “You know where my mind immediately goes is that the political climate in the world we’re living in today is creating an atmosphere where this sort of activity could be acceptable in someone’s mind,” Myers said.

not really saying this for any reason but, one of the reasons we need to increase wages to take more money out of the top earners is because it’s bad for the economy for all the money to get pooled in one place. 100 people can spend 100 dollars (reinvesting them into the economy) like 100 times faster than 1 person can spend 100 dollars. Right now all the money is being sucked into like one place, and the top earners are very bad at keeping up with their spending duties. If that wealth was more distributed we would have a more functional free market because there would be more spenders working on reinvesting the money.

I saw a post on Tumblr saying that pigeons have the cognitive capacity of a 5-6 year old child. Does this make them on par with parrots and corvids?

Pretty much, yeah. Pigeons can read, parrots can actually talk (meaning, they know what they’re saying, at least sometimes), and then members of Corvus are crazy in general, but Common Ravens are expert problem solvers. And chickens can count. Look, birds are crazy smart okay?

The„Stadtaubenprojekt”

I left a comment on a post of @ramseyringnecks​ and she asked me to post it separately so it´s easier to spread. However I did some research yesterday and feel like adding some more information!

In Frankfurt a project was started called the “Stadtauben project”. They build “Pigeonshouses” where they offer them shelter, nests and good food. So the pigeons love to be there and nest there. Like most private owners that do not want to breed pigeons they simply replace the eggs with fake ones. This solution goes back to the „augsburger model“  pigeon „pest control“. The main difference of various „City pigeon“ projects is that they also feed the pigeons which was originally not part of the Augsburger model but is now seen as an important part to maintain pigeon health and happynes and reduce the annoyance of the public. (pigeons no longer need to forage on the streets and poop on buildings) According to their website the pigeons spend 80% of the time in the houses and the birth control got a success rate of 95%.

The main issue they ran into is that is hard to find places within the city for the pigeon houses. Many landlords do not want pigeons on their ground because they are afraid of the noise and pollution. However an important part for this to work is to build the houses at places where pigeons already live. To improve this situation the public needs to be educated on what pigeons are really like.

so far they have built 10 houses which is of course not a lot yet but it seems to be an great idea! If cities would invest the money they put in anti pigeons campaigns into such projects everyone would be happier. (anti pigeon campaigns like forbidding the feeding of pigeons or killing them are VERY unsuccessful and expensive)

Pigeons are abandoned pets they deserve a better life. They deserve a home and since we can´t adopt all of them this could be the real solution for pigeons and us.

This week I had a lovely conversation with an older dyke who reminded me how much a lot of people have always hated TERFs and SWERFs. 

She was talking about the time in the 1970s and 1980s when she was a young radical dyke and how many of the awesome dykes in the radical scene were trans women. So I asked her if there was ever any problem with TERFs and SWERFs. She didn’t know those words so I described them. Her reply was:

“Oh, you mean the political lesbians? That’s what we called them at the time, no one really considered them radical. They hated everyone. They hated bisexual women who dated men. They hated us leather dykes and kinky dykes because they thought we were ‘copying the patriarchy’, they hated trans women. None of us in the radical scene liked them. A lot of them later left and admitted that they were straight but were presured to identify as lesbians in that group because being a feminist to them meant cutting all ties with men. They were like a cult. Intense stuff. ”

And like, I know her memories don’t have global relevance and there have also been places where TERFs had a much more prominent impact on the local radical women’s community, but still, to hear how despised these TERFs have always been by these truly radical dykes cheered me up a lot.

This photo always cheers me up a bit. It’s a front-page article from 1955 about Christine Jorgensen, one of the first women to have sex-reassignment surgery.

Since the text is a bit small and I couldn’t find a larger copy, here’s what the small blurb says:

George W. Jorgensen, Jr., son of a Bronx carpenter, served in the Army for two years and was given honorable discharge in 1946. Now George is no more. After six operations, Jorgensen’s sex has been changed and today she is a striking woman, working as a photographer in Denmark. Parents were informed of the big change in a letter Christine (that’s her new name) sent to them recently.

This article is 58 years old, and it’s more respectful of Christine’s pronoun choices and name than some publications are today. It makes me happy to see a newspaper be respectful of a trans person’s choice of name and pronouns like that :3
