black butler unironically has one of the most fun and complex relationship dynamics ive seen between two characters in shonen and honestly im happy the shota bait scared an audience away. if u cant handle them at their weird ass sexual corset scene u dont deserve them at their book of the atlantic

ciel is a great character because he’s a massive bitch and the smallest little tragic baby that’s ever existed. three apples tall and they’re all laced with cyanide

when people talk about emotional attachment between sebastian and ciel (or lack thereof) they almost always talk about it from sebastian's perspective, but imo ciel's is the most interesting.

because no matter how carefully he maintains his cold persona and denies his own vulnerability, ciel is underneath it all a traumatised and grieving child. regardless of emotional attachment in either direction, sebastian has taken on the role of psuedo-parent in day to day life. and that matters, that has an impact.

we know ciel seeks comfort from sebastian when his walls collapse ("stay with me until i fall asleep", clinging to him in circus arc), and we know he fears sebastian in similar circumstances (GWA). and that is chilling.

the horror of allowing yourself to be mothered and protected by something inhuman, evil, something that wants to consume you. the horror of realising you've grown physically and emotionally reliant on this creature against every better instinct.

and no matter how you try to distance yourself, no matter how much fear and hate you feel, no matter how deeply you understand that this imitation of a human cannot possibly care... you rely on it. and some tragic, grieving part of you still craves the comfort of the one you rely on most

"i went through a month of being raped, my brother died, and i made a contract with a demon who is supposed to devour my soul. nothing worse can happen to me" and then his aunt tries to kill him because she turns out to be a serial killer, and his job is to catch her, and she dies in front of his eyes, and he joins the circus to infiltrate a group kidnapping children, and their father is a guy who wanted to be one of those who tried to use him, but he failed because he was chained to a bed, but he still triggers his ptsd, and he has to kill all the kidnapped children because they won’t be able to deal with the trauma after the events they went through, and the queen finds out so as punishment she tries to frame him for murder, and a circus boy tries to kill him, and suddenly it turns out his enemy is a bunch of zombies, but he survives and his reliable demon turns out to be more vulnerable than he imagined and one of the few people who knew his father closely turns against him, and when he carries out further orders from the queen he almost dies twice, first from gas poisoning and then from being crushed by a tank, and when he returns to england his fiancée runs away from home and doesn’t want to come back, and his friend’s servant dies and his friend will never be the same again, so basically he lost him, and all of that because he couldn’t tell him clearly enough not to interfere in his affairs and he will feel guilt about it for the rest of his life, and in the manor it turns out his brother was resurrected and frames him for murders and takes his property, his title and his fiancée and he is forced to run away, and when he finally thinks he can peacefully conduct his investigation his false identity is exposed from the very beginning and he is in a place where others know more about him than he knows about them, and a strange guy appears who knows sebastian is a demon, and suddenly the queen appears and he is probably like a trapped mouse in a room where cats are waiting for him to be within reach, and his name isn’t even ciel phantomhive.

ohhh I'm really loving this storyline of getting to see how Sebastian used to get souls

MY MANNNN indeed (plus always great when Toboso reminds us that Sebastian is a DEVIL and that his ultimate goal isn't to uwu support Ciel it's to EAT HIM)

but also fascinating that apparently a pact works even if you don't know that you're making it?

Did he do it differently for Ciel because there wasn't really a choice or is the soul "better" if the deal is made with more intention?

Like he's been serving Ciel for years to get this One Soul meanwhile he got Anna's soul in what a week? a month? seems a much better deal so what is up with this....like did the ritual bind him to make a deal so he had to?

Obviously he's tried to get out early before but he was also always real happy when Ciel saw the trap soooo
