The Skinny on Eczema
Our skin is the main point of protection for our bodies, so having eczema breaks down our body’s protection making us more susceptible to infections. We need to make sure we do everything we can to avoid the causes as well as take precautions to replenish what is stripped away from our skin. Drinking water is vital for healthy skin. It sustains cell health and eliminates toxins and waste. Vitamins A, C, D, & E are also significant in the health of your skin, promoting rapid healing.
Dry skin comes from multiple factors and can be caused by genetics, friction, lack of vitamins A & B, and exposure to extreme cold or heat. Some of the most common triggers of eczema are allergens, colds, rough materials, irritants, excessive wetting and drying of the skin, hard water, fragrances & dyes, stress, and low humidity. It is best to avoid anything that your skin reacts negatively to. Even though irritations are not permanent, prolonged use of the irritants can cause permanent allergic reactions.
Physical irritants may be wool or lanolin and would basically cause contact eczema. Contact eczema can be an allergic reaction to things (examples: poison ivy, nickel, ect.) or an irritation from things like detergent. It can also be caused after sunlight exposure, known as phototoxic dermatitis.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is the greasy peeling of the scalp, eyebrows, & face. It may be caused from a lack of biotin and is also known as cradle cap in infants. This is usually the first type of eczema we will see in our children. Another form we may see is also xerotic eczema, which is dry skin that is serious enough it turns into eczema. It resembles a cracked riverbed. It is also known as asteatotic, craquele, craquelatum, winter itch, or pruritus hiemalis.
Atopic eczema is a form of hereditary eczema. It is an allergic disease and runs in families, usually with asthma. It is also known as infantile, flexural, and atopic dermatitis. Myself as well as 2 of my children suffer from this type of eczema. My oldest and I have asthma, and my middle daughter has been diagnosed with a wheat allergy that I later found is something that triggered her eczema. Researchers have studied eczema in people who suffer from celiac disease. It has been found that eczema occurs 3 times more frequently in celiac patients and 2 times more frequently in relatives of celiac patients.
No matter what form of eczema you have, tap water can cause your skin to become dried and chapped. It is recommended to keep your hand washing to no more than 10 to 15 times daily, especially in hard water. Other things to stay clear from is the prolonged use of topical corticosteroids. Using them excessively can increase side effect risks, the most common being atrophy. People with eczema also should not get the Small Pox vaccine. You are at risk of eczema vaccunatum, which can be fatal.

The Skinny Collection
This is going to be the beginning of a series about skin: the anatomy, diseases, and care. I hope you find it both helpful as well as educational.
Skin is the largest organ of the body. It protects the network of muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and everything else that composes our bodies. Despite how thin our skin seems, it is composed of many different layers. The epidermis, or outer-most layer of the skin, is composed of 5 layers while the dermis itself is only 2 layers.
Dermatology is the science of the nature, structure, functions, diseases, and treatment of skin. The 2 types of fields within dermatology are dermatologist and esthetician. If you are having trouble with your skin, it is wise to see a dermatologist, a physician that engages in the science of treating the skin, its structures, functions, and diseases. They will be able to tell you the what and why about what is going on with your skin. An esthetician, on the other hand, is a person who specializes in the cleansing, health preservation, and beautification of the skin. They will be able to help you with a daily regime to help with your skin.
In the later articles, we will discuss the 2 most common problems people have with skin. The first is eczema, which I myself have had since I was born. The second is psoriasis, which is similar to eczema in some aspects, but is also completely different and will be compared in a later piece. We will also discuss different triggers and causes of both skin ailments.

Thyme to Change
A lot of us have a spice rack with a little bottle of thyme on it. Thyme is a common herb found in many households, but do we really know how useful this plant is? It has been used for centuries for various reasons. We can almost always find some in our kitchen, and if not, at a nearby grocery store. But in the kitchen, this little herb not only brings a twist to our foods, it also works as a disinfectant. It is great for cleaning and disinfecting many different surfaces like counters, tables, cutting boards, and any other place we would want to kill viruses, bacteria, and germs without leaving behind harsh chemicals for your family to possible ingest. It is effective against Staph (Staphalococcus aureus) and E. Coli (Escherichia coli). It also is known to be a preservative for your foods.
Besides the kitchen, it is hard to imagine where else you would be able to use thyme. How about in your medicine cabinet? You can use it in a mixture with honey to help prevent infections to small wounds. It can also be used in a tea to help aid in respiratory problems like bronchitis or asthma, as well as aid in digestion by helping dissolve and remove mucus from the intestinal tract and the parasites in the gut. The tea can also help ease menstrual cramps and when taken right before bed, can lower your cortisol levels to help you relax and decrease your chances of nightmares.
Another handy place to keep it is outside. Insects hate thyme. It makes a good insect repellant for yourself as well as your garden and flowerbeds.
I am sure there are many more uses for thyme than the few I have told you about, but this was just a peek at some of the perks of thyme. It is not only handy, but also healthy too. It is a good source of iron, manganese, fiber, and calcium on top of everything here. I hope you have learned a few uses for thyme in your life.

Could You Be Bathing in Embalming Fluid?
We all bathe on a regular basis, cleansing ourselves (and our children) with various products that we find on the shelves of our favorite stores because that is what we have always done, and frankly, so does everybody else. Not everyone knows that a common preservative in most of our daily hygiene products is a formaldehyde-releasing agent called Quaternium-15. When added to warm water, it releases formaldehyde, which is a well-known carcinogen, and yes, is what is used to preserve the bodies of our loved ones after death. Is this something you want preserving the products you use on a daily basis? One of the names most parents trust is Johnson & Johnson. We at least start to use these products as soon as we bring our precious babies home from the hospital and give them their first bath at home. Many of Johnson & Johnson baby products have Q15 in them as a preservative, so from the first bath we are introducing cancer-causing ingredients to our newborn’s delicate skin. Below is a table of some of the products from Johnson & Johnson that contain this ingredient. This information can be found in the US Dept of Health & Human Services’ Household Product Database1.
Johnson's Creamy Baby Oil
Johnson's Baby Bedtime Bath
Johnson's Baby Bath, Original
Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath
Johnson's Soothing Skin Baby Bath
Johnson's Moisturizing Baby Bath with Aloe Vera & Vitamin E
Johnson's Baby Shampoo, Natural Lavender
Johnson's Baby Shampoo, Original
Johnson's Baby Shampoo, Honey & Vitamin E
Johnson's Baby Shampoo, 2 in 1 Detangler
Johnson's Baby Head to Toe Wash, Original
Johnson's Baby Head to Toe Body Wash, Tropical Blast
Johnson's Baby Head to Toe Body Wash, Berry Breeze
These are not the only products that we might find ourselves using in our house that contain this unnecessary ingredient. Other manufacturers that use Quaternium-15 are Cover Girl, Palmolive, Aveeno, Mr. Bubble, etc. There are many products that I have used in the past on the list found on the US Department of Health & Human Services webpage, and I will never use those products again. What are you using in your house that has Q15 in it?
