I am fighting for my life over here.
I've been seeing a lot of ads with flashing lights on here lately. If it is safe for you to engage, lease report these if you see it. There is an option for "this ad contains flashing images" in the drop down.
Please stay safe.

Finding out that Frances Dana Barker Gage, a white woman, rewrote Sojourner Truth’s famous speech to be more stereotypically “Southern slave” (complete with slurs and misspellings like dat, dere, dey) when Sojourner Truth was actually from New York and spoke only Dutch until she was almost ten and wouldn’t have actually sounded that way linguistically and decidedly did not use the phrase “Ain’t I A Woman?” at all is…whew. And on top of everything, she embellished details about Sojourner Truth’s life (like the number of children she had/how many of them were sold into slavery), wrote that ST said that she could take beatings like a man, and the reception of the speech in the room (she claims ST was called a n*gg*r, earlier accounts say the room was welcoming).
Lmaooo peak white feminist antics.
You can read the most accurate transcript here, alongside the racist edited one.
I was already disgusted just reading about this but looking at the side-by-side comparison of the real speech and the rewrite really brought it home.
See the two versions of her first line below:
Yeah I remember a few years ago when I found this out through Feminista Jones and was mad but not that surprised because white woman so….
This sent me down a bit of a research rabbit hole and I found a cool thing where afro Dutch women read Sojourner’s speech aloud in their contemporary Dutch dialects in hope of offering a more truthful rendition of her authentic Dutch voice.
support cognitively disabled voices with limited understanding of ableism.
support cognitively disabled voices who don't notice when they're being discriminated against.
support cognitively disabled voices who want to be told when they're being discriminated against, and support cognitively disabled voices who don't want to know. support cognitively disabled voices who only want to know if they ask.
support cognitively disabled voices who notice that they're being treated differently, but can't communicate how they feel about it.
support cognitively disabled voices who do understand and notice, but others incorrectly assume they don't.
support cognitively disabled voices who don't know ableism exists at all.
equal rights and treatment shouldn't only be available to those who understand it and can fight for it. don't leave cognitively disabled people behind.

so ive worked in childcare for a bit now. during the pandemic, the place i worked started a day program for kids whose parents needed to return to work. turns out the school district uses memorization and cueing, and when combined with online learning that read all the instructions to them, overwhelmingly the kids aged 5-9 just... couldnt read.
i brought in a bunch of my books from childhood, and we started having one-on-one reading lessons with the littles. then i went out and bought about fifty more books secondhand. first step was covering the pictures so the kids couldnt guess what the words said and had to actually TRY reading them first. second step was making a list of new words for each kid so we could learn about those words, what they meant, and if the kids were old enough, some of the etymology behind them (because if you can recognize latin root words, it's easier to make connections for pronunciation later on eg. unicorn -> universe).
the kids HATED this. reading was previously the easiest class and now it was really, really hard. but reading class had also previously been the most boring class; their books were ten pictures with a single sentence on the opposite page. we got through it by taking turns reading books the kids picked out from my collection- they would read one sentence or paragraph, then i would read the whole page complete with funny voices, then it would be their turn again, etc. it turns out that if kids are motivated to hear the rest of a good story or a lot of information about a topic they love, they're more willing to struggle.
the kids improved so rapidly that i honestly almost cried a few times from how proud i was. one little girl (kindergarten aged) went from being unable to sound out the whole alphabet to reading goodnight moon by herself in two months :'>
all this, though, was NOT my job. my job was to keep the kids on task during their online schooling and prevent them from killing each other or starving. i am not a teacher. the school system was failing these kids to the degree that outside individual reading lessons were necessary, and school systems across the US are still doing this!
if you are a parent or teacher or childcare worker, PLEASE check to see what your kid is being taught. ask to see examples of lesson materials. raise concerns about the importance of phonics over any other reading strategy. join the pta, go to school board meetings, send emails- just make sure your kid is actually learning to read.
Ok so at this point I've had two people roll up to me in manual wheelchairs, well, one of them was somebody pushing somebody who was nonverbal at the time, but it still counts. They asked me why I had zip ties around my tires.
It's winter where I'm living and we have really bad snow. And the snow plow people are really bad at their jobs probably because there aren't snow plow people who clean sidewalks. As a solution I got to thinking about how I could increase the traction on my wheels. And the most redneck thing I could think of was taking a bunch of zip ties and tying them around my wheels. They last surprisingly long, and work surprisingly well. It's basically the same premise as chains for your tires during the winter.
I chose to space them out pretty evenly so there's about one for every spoke. You could probably do more or less depending on how many you want and how much traction you get but I wouldn't go more than three per spoke. I realize that it's a bit later in the winter, and I probably should have made a post about this sooner, but I came up with it about a week ago. So please share this, even if you're not disabled, because there are tons of people I know who are stuck in their houses because they can't get around in the snow. A pack of zip ties costs about $5, which compared to $200 knobby snow tires is a big save, and if you want to invest you could get colored zip ties.

Oh fuck yes. Thank you all the abled people between op and me this is exactly what I needed to see 💜
ooh sweet, thanks for the tip
(for anyone using their chair both indoors and outside, highly recommend wheelchair 'slippers'/wheel socks like these so you don't tear up wood/vinyl/linoleum flooring with the zip ties!)
! This is fucking amazing and I love it!!!
Since there’s OP didn’t include a caption, here are some links to fundraisers to help our tribe! Thank you!

I don't have a Rota tacked to my wall I don't expect to find one anywhere at all If the telephone is ringing, I pick up to see who calls I don't have great big posters about slips and trips and falls I decide what happens, when I go to bed or eat I decide who enters in, which people I will greet I decide on furniture, which bed, which bath, which seat I decide the temperature, and when to turn up heat All the things around my house, they all belong to me I don't have strangers coming in changing channels on TV All the post I get is opened by the addressee I have dominion in my castle, I have my privacy I don't use my home for meetings, training or interviews The colors in my carpet are my favorite chosen hues All records kept about me are accurate and true And, if I really want to, I will own 100 shoes I will make my choices ; i will make my own decisions
And any plan I make contains my own wishes and visions Any person in my home is only here from my permission No office do I have here, no rules and no restrictions I decide who to employ to a vacant situation I decide on where I want to store my medication I have the right to keep my mother out of my accommodation And I don't need to have a weekly fire evacuation No risk assessments stop me from trying something new I make my own mind up about everything I do When I need support I will let you know if it's you Hands off, it's my home - or Sam Sly and I will sue Adrian Kennedy | Open Future Learning
