We had to move larger specimens in our zoology collection, so we used rolling wedges (also called tri-dollies) that are typically used for moving furniture and appliances. We inserted pieces of wood into the bases and fixed the extremities to the wedges. This was enough to easily move the large and heavy specimens.

We had no designated area in storage for our large textiles, and they had ended up on the floor of one of our exhibit spaces. We were inspired by the STASH article “A Textile-Hanging System Composed of Readily Available Hardware Materials“ (https://bit.ly/2ytVou5) to create a racking system using materials from our local hardware store - specifically shelving bracket shelving. Instead of drilling holes in the closet rods and using J-hooks (which we could not do), we used “S-hooks” and chains, and suspended the rod using hardware for chainlink fencing in which we placed a neoprene gasket. We needed to place stoppers on the ends of the poles to further prevent the closet rods from sliding out. In retrospect, if we could not drill holes, we should have inserted a longer length of chain inside the closet rod and hung the chain directly to the brackets using “S-hooks”.

We had limited space for our framed objects, so they were becoming quite scattered throughout the various storage spaces. We relocated our file cabinets, regrouped our framed works by size and expanded and strengthened our slotted shelving using lumber and “L-brackets”. Previously, the slotted shelving units had been resting directly on the file cabinets. Now, the framed works are much more accessible and a proper inventory can be done. We padded the surfaces using polyethylene foam.

We had about 30 rolled maps and plans that were stacked directly on the floor and inaccessible. We created a custom, low-cost unit on top of an existing map drawer cabinet. We used pieces of lumber (strapping), “L-brackets” and peg board (masonite) to provide better access and visibility. We also found several other maps and plans scattered throughout the museum that we could now store in the same location.

We had tools that were previously stored on shelves (wasting a significant amount of vertical space),which we hung at the end of our aisles using common nails padded with polyethylene foam. Now we have more shelf space.

Our collection of antependia (parament or decorative hanging, usually in front of an altar) was stored in a narrow sideboard and the lower compartment was unusable. We built a box on wheels made of birchwood, and used trouser hangers obtained from a large home furnishings store to create a hanging system. We padded the trouser hangers with polyester batting and medical gauze.

We used a simple, low-cost system to deal with a large quantity of blankets, which used to be folded and packed tightly on shelving. We covered long cardboard tubes with polyester film (Mylar/Melinex), rolled the textiles onto them, interleaving them with acid-free tissue. We protected the rolls with unbleached cotton covers (tied with twill tape) and attached images of each blanket with accession numbers for easy retrieval. Each tube was hung using steel electrical conduit, perforated at both ends and hung using hooks to industrial bracket shelving (without the shelves). These materials were purchased at the local fabric and hardware store. We had some leftover pegboard (perforated masonite boards) and used it everywhere we could: to create vertical storage racks for long and thin objects, for objects that would have taken up too much shelf space, or as shelves for light objects such as baskets.

Before, space in our rolled and hanging textiles storage space was not being used efficiently. We reorganized this space rationally, grouping similar types and size together, using a hanging chain system with ABS pipes and a metal rod insert to prevent them from sagging. The rods were interleaved with polyester film.
