QUICK BIO: My Rook has a different background as the one described in game. Neph was born as Morgana Whitlock, the daughter of a minrathous magister. When it became clear that she had no magical talent despite her lineage, she was hidden from the world.

From a young age she found ways to sneak out from under her parents' watchful eyes. This is how she came to know Minrathous, and how she ended up with the Shadow Dragons. It was through their connection with the Dragons, their acceptance that they discovered their transmasc nonbinary identity. Changing their name to Nephilia Mercar. Though their previous nickname, 'Rook', always stuck.

Rook acted as a spy for the Dragons. Though skilled with their rapiers, their real talent was in information dealing. Finding out secrets about the elite of Minrathous and either using it to blackmail them or selling it to the highest bidder. This is what planted a target on their back, and caused them to step away from the Dragons for everyone's safety.

This is when Varric approached and recruited them.

Rook goes exclusively by they/them pronouns.

They are an elven rogue of the shadow dragons, with a duelist specialisation

In my first playthrough I romanced Emmrich, though I am open to shipping with other companions and will not assume a relationship status without plotting

The Cobbled Swan wasn’t crowded yet, drifting into that odd, trickling hour between day and night. Sylvie leaned back, armour creaking, sharp eyes sweeping the room. Sunlight filtered through the leaded glass in golden rays, casting warped shapes and lazy shadows across the tavern’s wooden floor. The barkeep hummed an idle tune while polishing pints for the evening, only a few patrons scattered about, huddled in their own hushed conversations

The quiet didn’t sit well with her. She felt exposed, wary of the unfamiliar faces around them. Anyone could be a Venatori in disguise, awaiting the defector who sought Rook out. It wouldn’t be the first time they’d been tailed - and there was only one way to find out.

Sylvie glanced over at Rook, studying their expression while they looked off. She wasn’t one for needless chatter, but there was a deeper silence that clung to them ever since they’d left the Lighthouse - the kind that brewed like an overhead storm. Something weighed on them - that much was obvious. Whatever it was, it would have to wait. Sylvie needed Rook to stay focused.

“Rook,” she said low at first. The second came sharper, harder to ignore. “Rook.”

She leaned forward until she was level with them, stormy grey eyes locked onto theirs.

“Busy having a chat with your special friend?” she added, tapping her temple with two fingers.

Docktown used to be Rook's entire world. Ever since Varric had recruited them, everything had become so impossibly large. Minrathous, Tevinter, the entirety of Thedas. It used to be just a concept to them. Now they are partly responsible for its survival. The Cobbled Swan brings a comforting familiarity. Many evenings were wasted here in their younger years.

With everything that had went on. Varric's injury, the elven Gods and their blight, the realisation that this city no longer felt like home had somehow hit them the hardest.

Sylvie managed to pull them back to the present. They hadn't even realised how long they'd let their mind wander until they locked eyes with hers, their own dark ones blinking in surprise.

They grimace in exaggerated discontent at the mention of the Dread Wolf before they even realise it. " My ' friend ' is the last thing that I'd call him . ' Parasite ' is more like it . " They grumble. " He usually leaves me alone unless I'm dreaming . But it'd be stupid to think he's not always watching regardless . " They tap their nails on the wooden table impatiently. Quickly scanning over the room. " Thanks for coming , by the way . Ideally , this won't turn into a fight . But when has that ever been how it goes ? "

oh, youth. oftentimes so unbearably stubborn and impossible to reason with. it seems emmrich keeps finding new ways and motives to appreciate the maturity and wisdom that come with age. " when i agreed to join your cause, i was very aware of the perils i would come face. " the senior necromancer pauses, his concern evident despite the calmness in his tone. " your aid is most appreciated, truly, but i would not have you throwing yourself into harm’s way on my behalf, not when i am more than capable of handling my own battles. " his words are not meant to admonish them, but they rather spell a gentle plea to reconsider their approach on the battlefield.

" constantly pushing yourself too hard can take a great toll on both your body and mind. i shall make it my mission to remind you that we are a team and, as such, we must put our trust in each other's capabilities — i'm quite certain manfred agrees with my statement, too. " a familiar hiss can be heard from behind the training dummy, a pair of green gems pops out from behind one of its dislocated wooden shoulders.

Rook scoffs. Not cruelly, rather like something Emmrich said reminded them of an inside joke only they are privy to. " You misunderstand me . I trust your abilities with my life . We are a team , you play your part perfectly . Frankly , you wouldn't be here if I didn't think you capable . No matter how much I enjoy your company . " They turn their head to acknowledge the skeleton joining them. " And Manfred's , of course . "

They sigh and shake their head. " That's part of my job , isn't it ? To make sure you're all up for this . That you're all pulling your weight, and correct you if you're not . Whatever that may take . " They hesitate before continuing. " But who's checking me ? I'm so vigilant for weak links - but there are none . What if I'm the one holding us back ? You're too nice , Emmrich . I need someone who can tell me to piss off if I'm endagering you all . "

Rook blinks, they hadn't even noticed Emmrich approaching. Something else they should train more on. Once his words register, they sheath their double rapiers with a telltale shink. " You insist , do you ? " They repeat lightheartedly. Though with their heavy breathing and their arm partially blocking their expression as they wipe the sweat from their brow, there is an unexpected bite to it.

They sigh. " You saw me against those Venatori yesterday , Emmrich . They nearly got to you . We all have our roles to play in combat . If I can't do mine , it all falls apart . " Rook explains, their fingers tracing the edges of their respective rapier handles. Eager to continue laying it out on the training dummy, the poor thing barely held together. " Your magic has saved my hide more times than I can count by now . If you can't do your job because you're too busy keeping some random asshole off you're back , that's it . " They rattle off quickly, making it obvious how many times this sentiment has played in their mind.
