"let's start from the very beginning. A huge fact of these 11 years old children assuming that Snape was evil, and trying to steal the philosophers stone, was not just because he was mean, was not just because he was slytherin, but it was also because of his appearance. His Gothic aesthetic of pale skin, greasy black hair, dark robes, and his prominent large nose, were all utilized to make him a visual shorthand of classic villains. Everything from Dracula to evil witches with larged, hooked noses, and like I said throughout this video, the goal was misdirection, so I think it was great visual characteristics of Snape. It was supposed to contrast the harmless looking professor Quirrel. He's supposed to be judged immediately by both the readers and these children. And even as we, the readers, and Harry, Ron and Hermione, no longer see him as the antagonist the way we did in the first novel, these visual characteristic linger and add an air of distrust."
Uhhhhhhhh
Is.... Is anyone gonna tell him or....?
This is the YouTuber trying to explain how casting Snape as black in the new Harry Potter adaptation will change the kids and audience from suspecting a character based on 'neutral, classic visual shorthand of villany' to them being racist agaisnt the only black teacher in school.
Honey, there are NO 'morally netrual' physical features of villainy
Wether it's ablelist or racist or homophobic or misogynist of transphobic
REAL HUMAN PHYSICAL FEATURES BEING USED TO SIGNIFY THAT SOMEONE IS EVIL WILL ALWAYS COME FROM ONE FORM OF BIGOTRY OR ANOTHER
And in this one, it's antisemitsm!
