Shoutouts to the time I had a severe fever and took benedryl and wanted to listen to feel good inc but couldn’t remember the name. I think I was crying over this
one of those false etymology posts but with the actual etymology of the word
I was today years old when I realized helicopter is helico- (as in helix) -pter (as in pterodactyl) 😂
sooo was anyone going to tell me that the -ter in daughter is the same suffix as the -ther in mother father and brother but under an exception to grimm's law or like
OMG WAIT I FIGURED IT OUT
IT'S "LASER" BECAUSE IT'S LIGHT AMPLIFICATION BY STIMULATED EMISSION OF RADIATION
WHAT???
Wait so “Cyborg” is short for “CYBernetic ORGanism”? That makes so much sense!
“bits to use in everyday conversations”
the thing about "detecting" ai is that, when it gets down to it, the question being asked is "how can we stop people from CHEATING at WRITING?"
and the answer is: you don't. this is a non-issue. people are going to do it, and some of the are going to lie about it, and that's that. that's true of literally everything, and in this case, it doesn't really cause any new problems.
yes even in college and academic papers. yes even in news writing. the thing you need to realize is that people who are uninterested in doing the actual thing would have found a way to "cheat" anyway. there were already sloppy news articles with no fact checking. there were already people paying other people to write their college assignments. and there DEFINITELY have been people writing terrible content farm type garbage in like 2 weeks, or just finding a ghost writer. this has not shattered the world yet, because none of these issues really actually cause unusual levels of harm. the bad articles are something you should always be wary of anyway. the college students are only really hurting their own learning prospects. the fiction authors are actually not really harming anything at all, beyond annoying people. at least its not the abysmal working conditions of a content farm.
the grammatical ambiguity in that second to last sentence was not intentional, but i am amused by it so im leaving it in. i MEANT "the worst thing ai fiction does is annoy people," not "ai fiction only harms annoying people."
but i mean...
I also think that you just have to judge by the end product. If it’s shitty writing, it’s shitty writing, doesn’t matter if it’s ai generated, plagiarized, or phoned-in. I feel like it’s kinda useless to try and figure out if something was ai generated, because it distracts you from the real question of the writing’s actual quality.
I’m going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what “Fire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child no” means and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.
It's like if you're at a campfire and two people pick up a guitar and one doesn't even know "Wonderwall."
If you’d like a better look at how this thing works and how I put it together/made all of the parts, here you go. Made this back in, 2015 I want to say?
Sent this puppet in to the animators with an apology in the e-mail lmao.
For the record, the neck is segmented for animation for the first 10 or 11? segments. I didn’t feel like moving them all to show that here though, because it’s too much of a pain in the butt to do when PS is lagging, but you can see it animate in its scene so I guess it goes without saying.
my tweet is so big i just found it on tumblr
when i was a kid i decided that killing people was bad therefore war was bad therefore the military was evil. and adults would tell me it's more nuanced than that and i would understand when i grew up. well i'm a grown up now and idk i still think that killing people is bad and war is bad and the military is evil
Thirteen: Hey, I just ran an X-ray on that patient Will Navidson and his skull measures a quarter of an inch wider on the inside than it does on the outside

I needed to see this today.
Something my dear friend said to me that i think fits
At first i was like: why the hell is this on tumblr?! And then it suddenly made sense...
This is incredible.
"Rarin' To Go" is my new track from RAKKA: WAKE 01 - SOOT! I'm proud to be one of the many musicians who contributed to this visual novel by Paradox Music Team. This is a super stylized and polished game, and the craziest part is I get to appear in it as a very special guest!
Check out the music video featuring footage from my sneak preview of the song at the Requiem Cafe. Maybe some of you cosplayers were there to witness HISTORY in the making!
